    1998, 130 crew cab 300 tdi ?????

My new -old 130 300 tdi has an Alisport intercooler fitted. I have contacted the previous owner who has advised me that the intercooler was fitted to drop temps whilst driving long distance. I'm aware the cooling system is fine and I have no issues. The vehicle has a discovery transfer case fitted and will not pull the skin of a rice pudding on take off . It cruises along ok once it gets to speed. What would people recommend to give it a bit more zing. I'm not in the position to throw a new turbo at it. Should I try a uprated turbo core. Also what fuel pump adjustments or leave it well enough alone. I read somewhere that alisport supply a guide to what adjustments they recommend. I'm confident, with the ability to adjust things. I have an egt gauge that will be fitted before any wild adjustments. Baz

The Bosch VE rotary injector pump is a great pump but after several hundred thousand K's over 20 years or so WILL be in need of overhaul as will the injectors. The rubber seals will be old and brittle and the throttle lever shaft bearing will be worn, as a bare minimum these should be replaced before any serious remote travel (assuming the IP hasn't already been rebuilt of course) When these fail you're ****ing out Diesel and often a long way from someone that can fix it, a definite show stopper.
This is not a cheap exercise ie. a couple of $K done right but IMO well worth it if the vehicle is to be 'a keeper'. It's heaps cheaper to rebuild than an inline pump.

I've had several 300TDi's both in Defenders and Disco 1 also my Oka engines use the same IP as does the 6BT Cummins now in the Oka.

I strongly recommend a trip down to Doran's Diesel who are your local Bosch agent for their expert input before mucking about with it. If you're about to play it's a good idea to start with a full deck.

IMO replacing the TC with a 1.2 instead of the factory 1.4 in a , let's face it, under powered and heavy 130" was a bad idea to start with. Would have been much better to play with tyre diameter to achieve gearing changes than the TC. If the plan is fully loaded touring go back to 1.4 and run 750R 16's / 235/85 R16's or if that's too hard run smaller diameter tyres.

But as a first step I'd make sure the IP is up to spec.

I fitted a boost pin to my 300tdi and made it a different car. Pulls really well from start and through the gears.

I would suggest this as a start and at only $100 well worth it

Also check for clogged fuel sediment bowl, replace fuel filter and lift pump, check timing and air filter

The 300Tdi has potential. I have a 12 month 1998 300Tdi 130 HCPU and it weighs in at 3t and on 285/75R16 MTZ rubber in standard city driving mode. Pulls very well off the mark. I do have the Allisport bigger intercooler, straight through 2 & 3/4" exhaust (zero mufflers) plus a pump tune on the dyno. To help improve compressed air flow even further, I even removed the kink in the metal pipe between the intercooler and the turbo (kink is there to clear the suspension tower cover).

I have always found mine a bit reluctant off the mark .
VNT turbo helps , but the disco gearing is a bad idea I think .
