2001 TD5 Defender 110 – Lash Adjuster Installation Query
G’Day Folks, I'm brand spankin new to this forum so not sure I've come through to the right group.. My query relates to our 2001 Defender 110 TD5 which recently underwent a much needed and well-earned overhaul. It all started with a clutch that had reached end-of-life but as we’d been noticing coolant and oil loss, I decided to pull the motor and get it ready for another tour or three.
Turned out that the head had a pin-hole in number cylinder and the dreaded TD5 plastic dowels had failed along with head gasket.
To cut a very long story short I have had the block to the machine shop, sourced a new head and now in the midst of putting her all back to together.
As per the heading my question relates to proper installation of the lash-adjusters. I have followed the manual religiously apart from “keeping the lash-adjusters upright at all times and in their original order whilst removed from engine.” Presumably the lash adjusters need to be kept upright to preserve their internal oil levels however due to all the gunk floating about in the oil I decided to give them a proper rinse out before putting them back into service.
The LR manual (I have) doesn’t explain whether or not the lash-adjusters need to be primed full of oil, all air expelled or left empty etc so I have no idea how their installation is correctly performed. I’ve read threads where lash-adjusters have popped out or potentially bending valve stems during initial start-up so am very keen to resolve this one beforehand – any help or guidance here is greatly appreciated.
Cheers and Thanks in Advance - Paul

Since no one else has replied I will throw my self on the sword. I was taught that if you cleaned out you hydraulic lifters ( Not land rover specific) you bled them by submersing in oil and push on the top till the air bubbles stop. I was also taught that you did not mix the lifters. unless your going to buy new lifters to fit i suppose go for gold. if your worried fit them up, disconnect ecu and turn engine over by hand a few times. if your happy with that, use the starter to do the same thing. I would watch the oil pressure light till you have pressure up before i started it up. Don't forget it will be a bitch to start, best do the fuel bleeding procedure several times, and insure your battery is in top condition.

Thank You >>!<<
Thanks kindly for your guidance and tips here - very much appreciated.
I've spent a small fortune on getting all the work done (small budget as usual for us unfortunately) and 10 new lash adjusters another $500 I believe. Hence my revisiting the old lash adjusters for re-use as they appear healthy.
I did manage to keep most of the parts in their original sequence however this was not the case once machinist identified pin-hole in the old head. they stripped head to salvage what they could but did not preserve lash adjuster sequence.
I'll keep your tips in mind as I progress this over the next week - will let you all know how it goes.
Cheers & Thanks Again

Never worry about asking questions especially if you think there dumb or you have made a mistake. Its how we learn. This forum has a wealth of information and people who will help you out . Don't be afraid to ask for help.
