I was doing some other work on the Defender and decided that since the clutch was exposed, I should replace it as it had done 315,000 km.
What I found was not quite what I would have expected. For a start, the difference in the thickness of the lining on the old clutch and a new heavy duty clutch was barely visible to the naked eye. I have always considered that I am fairly gentle on clutches, but I expected more wear than that.
The other surprise was that there are four springs arranged around the plate and three of them had a smaller spring inside, but one of them didn't. There are no spring fragments inside the bell housing. Could it have been built that way?

When I changed my clutch as part of a punch through on the operating arm found broken and missing springs but no bits. Plate was still quite usable but changed anyway. Certainly different feel after the change and much smoother takeoffs.
