    The Defender that could

Just got back from a trip to the Far North Queensland Laura, Cooktown and home by the Daintree . What can i say negative about the 1998 300 tdi 130, with Tub. Not a Bloody thing. Towed my camper trailer and equipment no issues. Gestimate about 300 kg in tub and 1000 towing. Got passed by many V8 Cruisers and other brand new tricked out 4wds carrying all the gear. My old girl chugged along at about 90-to 100 KPH in 4th . I"m running a disco transfer and 5 speed. Off road low range was the norm but driving to the conditions not a problem. Going up the Palmerston and other ranges drove to the best gear in some cases 3rd sitting at 80pkph with egts steady at about 500 not climbing any higher. All in all i'm a happy camper. Fuel wise i was not really worried guessing high 13 lts per 100. Given the crap roads i was on more then happy. Baz

Curious here.... but how did u find with the sort of load taking off from stand-still on "inclines"? What Tyre size were u running? I'm assuming u may have to slip it into "L" range to take off on hills, etc?

    Great times!
That little diesel, like it's thirstier brother the 3.5 v8, will go and go for ever if treated well. The big issue these days with modern 4x4s? Everyone is just In too much of a hurry...🙄 and carrying too much STUFF.
We need to start a return to the good old days of throwing the swag and some basic provisions into an old Isuzu County and travelling off to see...oh, wait...😏😏😏👍
The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

    Exactly.

One of my brothers bought a 1993 D1 V8 when it was a year old.

    It’s Just clicked over 370 000 k’s.
    Has original clutch,gearbox,transfer case,axles,etc.

Engine also original but has new cam and head gaskets.

He has done all the work on it,and it’s been serviced correctly.
As said, like anything mechanical, look after them and they will go for ever.

My first trip to central Australia - two of us with all our camping gear were able to fit four jerricans of fuel and two of water in the back of the Series 2 88 - and still see out the rear window!

I am setting off for Perth in the Isuzu County on Wednesday, and my camping gear etc is not much more - fits below the windows and behind the back seat - no jerricans, as the County has a belly tank for fuel (and does better economy than the Series 2 petrol) and a sill tank for water. (The County has just had its 640k service!)

Tyres came with truck 235/85/16 Maxis bighorns. Found them a bit noisy on the tar but worked a treat off road.
Starting off on and big slopes whilst towing required low range . But no issues changing back to high on the fly. Bit of practice smooth change no bangs or clangs. My way: gearbox neutral Transfer neutral, Slight rev and rear wood pressure on transfer lever and it dropped in no issues. Sounds complicated but takes about 2-3 seconds and no issues if you have selected the right gear. Not towing most slopes just a clutch slip. Baz
