Thread: Td5 cooling

Hi all. I have had a problem I am trying to get my head around with my td5.

A few weeks ago I had the vehicle idling in the driveway when I heard the coolant alarm going off. I turned on my nanocom and the coolant temp was 105 degrees and climbing. I watched it for 30 seconds debating to turn it off , it climbed to 108 degrees then quickly fell down to 82 degrees.

I assumed my thermostat had stuck closed so swapped it out for a new one. I have had no issues for the last 5000km then tonight the alarm went off again whilst driving. It did the same thing. Climbed quickly to around 102 degrees this time then even quicker dropped back to 82 degrees?

Any suggestions on where I should look. I have had no coolant loss.

I think he is probably right, the first post pretty much describes a failed head gasket on a td5, as soon as they start "making air" your in the bothers, it can easily be checked to see if exhaust gas has made it into the coolant, this may not have been done as most mechanics who have been around awhile will know all the other tricks.

I'd possibly shop around on pricing though, it may just be a head gasket, but the head would need testing.

Good second hand heads can probably be had for $1200-$1500 at last check.

Thanks James. On driving it this afternoon I noticed the coolant temp jumped from 83 to 89 then back to 83 in a matter of seconds.

I lifted the bonnet as it jumped back up to 88. The top radiator hose was rock hard. As I removed the expansion tank cap and there was no pressure releases all which is normal for my ute. The coolant level was at the cold level. I could hold my fingers in the coolant so I am guessing it must have been no more than 40 degrees.

About 30 seconds later the top hose went soft and coolant in the expansion tank raised to the usual hot level. It was scolding hot.

Does this sound like a cracked head?
