Steering wheel shimmy - steering damper

    Good day

I have reason to believe my steering damper is worn out and moves far too easily in and out. Could this explain why small irregularities on the motorway are causing my steering wheel to shimmy? It’s becoming a big concern. The wheels are balanced and on a smooth surface it doesn’t happen.

Might be worth checking your panhard rod bushes and the swivel housing bearing/bush preload.

Every bushing is new (all of them). I’ll get under it and look for play in the steering box. It comes on at 100km/hr but not on smooth surfaces.

Generally it's swivel pre-load, but play in the panhard will cause this, and the nut/bolt at the steering box end has to be stupid tight.

No. You should never need a damper. They are a bandaid. You need to fix whatever is loose.

I agree with this. Aside from all the bushes and swivel bearings, wheel bearings can also be a cause.

As everyone else has said pre load is the usual culprit, but I did have bent stub axle that took a while to diagnose...
