That’s quite spectacular. Must have suddenly sounded very sick. Which motor? Extended warranty?

Perentie 110 wagon ARN 49-107 (probably selling) turbo, p/steer, RFSV front axle/trutrack, HF, gullwing windows, double jerrys etc.

Ouch, that is impressive. Concerns would be what ended up in the motor? I hope nothing .
Ensure you clean out your intercooler.
2.2 Duratorque Engine. Apparently sounded very sick! (Belonged to a friend of a mate). Mate did all the cleaning and replacement of the turbo (vowed never to do it again and made rude assertions about Land Rover engineers!) Intercooler cleaned several times and inspected (by boroscope), crankcase ventilation pipe found to contain debris, also cleaned and inspected. Intake side of turbo inspected and debris found up to the air filter (cleaned and inspected). No debris found after intercooler. Since has completed trip to Newcastle and back with no issues.

I've been a bit reluctant to post this, as the memory of the wallet drain doesn't do much for my stress level .Happened in November last year -
So here is my effort. MY13 (build was Nov12 but it's plated MY13 - riddle me that), 120K ish on the clock, have had silicone hoses for about 2 years.
Had a turbo whistle for about 4-5 weeks before hand, neither mechanic or I could pin point it.
You can clearly see the cast iron flange has broken. Housing has slipped and taken out the compressor.
I could be wrong but I am strongly suspicious that the silicone hoses either weren't fitted correctly or aren't the correct shape. Impossible to prove if either caused the failure.
I'm going back to OEM on both sides of the turbo next service.

What was left of the compressor
IMG_0092.jpg
Metal thru the air system from the air cleaner, thru the intercooler, etc but stopped in the hoses before the intake manifold. Had the manifold removed and inspected anyway.
Was a very large bang, but the engine stayed running in limp mode until I was able to get it across the intersection.
Cheers Glen
Know this won't help with the $$$$, but might be a warning to DIY mechanics re care, cleanliness and accurate torque wrenches. :0)
Looks like fatigue striations on the impeller/compressor in the first photo. Picture 3 it is more pronounced RH piece. Note the curved tide marking. Then the clean overload fracture surface. Looks like???? one would need to look with a 10-15x or better to confirm. Optical microscope even better. Trace back to the tide mark radius centre to see what imperfection, damage is there. Will be minute, or perhaps not.
Unfortunately I can't increase "view" size.
With an electron microscope the number of revolutions/time to failure can most likely be calculated by counting the striations.
Most likely cause: casting/forging inclusion, damage to bore at original/last assembly, piece of grit/dirt, or failure to properly/accurately torque the retaining nut. (Any or All in combination)
Cheers

Same conclusion (re percipitaition of failure) that the mate came to (in previous employment he was diesel products manager for a international turbo company). He seems to remember that there is a 5 micron clearence between bore of the compressor wheel and shaft so any mark or inclusion can lead to failure. The other detail I omitted to mention that the vehicle had suffered a blown hose in the past (and possible turbo overspeed) and this may also have contributed to the failure. Turbo was original to the vehicle.

I was looking for some pics I had, image for image, I have had two customers Defenders with the exact same failure.
I dont think it's going to be an issue
