    300Tdi door lock mechanisum

    Hi all

I just go my 300Tdi back from the smash repairer after a tree feel on the front of it in January.

Unfortunately he didn't do a brilliant job of reassembling the drivers door handle. The original had the the push button smashed off it. The replacement has not been fitted correctly and the push button just goes in and does not open the door. There is no resistance so I guess it isn't connected to anything.. The entire handle is not secure..

Anyway the biggest problem I have now is the latching mechanism is in the locked position though the door is open and unable to be closed, subsequently rendering it unable to be driven (well safely/legally anyway).

How do I get this back into the open position. Sorry the photo is not very clear as it was dark when i took it. I tried levering with a screw driver but no go. Do I need to strip the whole mechanism out? I probably need to strip it anyway to refit the door handle correctly..

Does anyone have any insight into this process and what the traps are?

    Cheers - Simon

Can you release it by lifting the lock button? I realise you may have tried this already, but we're all capable of missing the obvious.
I'd suggest you'll be taking the door card off to release the lock if that doesn't work. You'll have check through the blokes work to make sure everything id hooked up properly, and if the exterior handle is loose, you'll have to take the door card off anyway.

    Thanks Don

Yes I tried lifting the lock button and the using the key. I will have to pull it all apart and see what’s going on..

To release the latch from the closed position, use a screw driver, or other tool that will allow you to place it into the latch hook.
You may need to pull the handle whilst at the same time pull the latch hook outwards(with the tool placed in the latch hook). Will be easier than it seems.

Dunno the defender door mechanism specifically, but what should happen is that when you get it in this situation, a single pull of the handle should release the latch hook half way, never all the way.
To release it all the way(ie. open door) there needs to be some pressure against the door to push it out a little .. like your door seal rubbers, or you pulling outwards on door.

So, if you pull the handle and the latch doesn't do the 'half release' then your latch mechanism is a bit dirty within, and could use a bit of a cleanup. Also, could be old tired springs too.

    Thanks AK47

I will give that a go this morning. I am sure there will be plenty of dirt in there. I need to pull the card off to fix the handle properly anyway.
