Thread: Defender 110 200 tdi air conditioner transplant

The dash is the same in both so the under mounted fan evap module should fit.
Hoses will need to be new, condenser will fit if the new slam panel is the aircon type ( deeper than the standard)
New crank pulley and engine bracket will be needed assuming the pump is ok
All of that said the down side is that the output volume of the old unit will be about 30% of what you need for a full body.
It might be with getting a quote for a roof mounted Reddot system which has been done several times before AFAIK.

The underdash is pretty anaemic and would not cool to the back of the wagon. There was one project reported that mounted a minivan aircon above the rear passenger seats maybe on the luggage barrier that seemed a better solution.

My 300 tdi underdash usually ices up if turned onto high fan settings, that is when it is working. Red dot is also something to consider.

If it's icing up it may be faulty. Has it been serviced? There may be a filter that is blocked. Ours was on our Disco.

I was told by an auto electrician to only run the 300tdi Aussie built aircon at about 6˚ at the vent beside the steering column otherwise it will freeze the condenser and reduced performance will be the result. Some fridgies on here might be able to expand on that, but after installing a little 12V temp gauge at the vent, I've had no more problems. It was never the best aircon system, but it does the job in the 130, just.

This thread is close to the line of a questioning I was going to post. So with an apology in advance I will post here.

I have a January 1993 build 110 ute 200 tdi which did not come with air conditioning. I also have a Discovery 1 - 300 tdi with air conditioning that works. Can the air conditioning be transplanted into my Defender ute?

The final and proper connections will be performed by an qualified air conditioner person. I could just do the initial swap-over of the required donor parts.

Not really, the main problem is the under dash unit that runs the full width of the dash pretty much, you Need to find one of those.

Just from my experience the standard a/c fitted to defenders in Australia (not county) Is adequate in the single cab utes, only drawback is that you lose a bit more of the oh so precious real estate for your knees and legs, especially in the passenger side.
