Wear on Auxilliary and Compressor Belt

    Hi everyone

What would cause this wear on the aux and compressor belts (see pictures)? Doesn't look serious yet but I want to get onto it. The belts don't appear to be rubbing on the pulley walls when the engine's not running.

I'm going to pull the belts off this weekend and take a look but thought I'd see if anyone has seen it before and could point me in the right direction.

Last year I changed the timing belt and it's been running fine with with no issues. Then the alternator died so I upgraded to a Bosch 100amp and that all well.

Then in the last month or so it has started making an irregular metallic sound (mostly when cold but also occasionally when running hot), a bit like the sound a rope makes hitting a flagpole... if that makes any sense. And not all the time - just every so often.

    Thanks

Check the tensioner as well as the dog nut on the harmonic balancer

So a bit of an update for future readers. I pulled both aux and compressor belts off and on closer inspection they aren't in too bad condition, just a bit of discolouration on the edge which I can't quite work out, especially as it's across both belts... . I'll keep an eye on it and see how it progresses.

All pulleys seem in line and bearings seem fine.

The good news is that pulling the belts off and putting them back on again seems to have fixed the clink-rattle issue. Might have been the compressor tensioner which I've torqued to spec.
