I don't subscribe to the mechanical engine is better than ECU engine thing. Much easier for a mechanic to plug in a cable and read codes than to diagnose by process of elimination on a mechanical injection engine. And not all mechanics are trained in mechanical injection, which has the potential that the mechanic is muddling his way around your engine than having a clear idea what to look for. Considering that mechanical diesel injection was obsolete in most cars in the late 90's and only persisted into the 00's in some trucks. That's my opinion and worth no more than a pinch of salt.

With the MSA you will still need to sort out a suitable shifter mechanism to suit the box. Sheldon did a shifter and Noel (Ancient Mariner) cobbled something for his back in the day. Not many have mastered it. A mate has Sheldon's shifter and says it is unique and takes some getting used to. A divorced set up also takes some thinking about the hand brake cable (not much spare length in the factory cable to move the transfer back 200mm/300mm) and the transfer shifter in a divorced set up. not insurmountable but a little thing to add to the list.

I wish you all the best. it will make a great tourer if the project comes off.
You have been researching this issue for your own vehicle for a while now MLD, have you made a decision/done a conversion yet? If so, what?

Have you talked with British Off-Road on the Sunshine Coast? They have about 100 Landys parked out the back, so they might have what you need.

I have been doing lots of thinking and no thanks to Covid, implementation is on hold until i get finances back in order. The current thinking is in line with my post on the Cummins ISF3.8 under tech. In short, Cummins ISDe4.5 bolted to ZF S5-42 manual with a Reece Myers close coupled LT230. The 4.5 with ZF manual is an engine/box option in the DAF LF45 so off the shelf flywheel/clutch etc. The 4.5 is a deep engine and might cause diff clearance issues. You can get the ISBe3.9 and the ISF3.8 in Euro IV which are of similar dimensions to the 4bd1T. All can come with SAE#3 FWH and Reece's adaptor make the ZF manual an easy choice. I have a guilty pleasure for the new Chev 427 crate engine with 6L80 but that is lotto wish item.
