    Defender 130 Rear Spring Problem

    Hello all

I had an issue this weekend whilst running down the Border Track (Pinnaroo/Bordertown). My inner rear springs locating lugs jumped out on both sides, and my right outer spring jumped out of the cradle. It was still drivable and I was able to jack the rear when we got to camp and put the springs back in. Is there a modification that can be done to prevent this, and also is it advisable to remove the rear inner spring? I don't load up the rear too much - maybe 300 to 400kg, and occasionally I tow a small Jayco pop up camper van - 1200kg.

    Thanks.
    Ty

    Aftermarket shocks I’m guessing.

You can remove the inner and run a heavier outer spring without a problem and it should help prevent the issue.

Or retainer plates, although I’m not sure they can be fitted with the inner coil.

For your use, a 400kg constant load coil would do the trick, and should remain in place depending how long your shocks are.

    Yep, dampers are too long.
The stock shocks won't let that happen.
You'll need to make retainers, hose clamps can work, I used them but they will need semi-regular replacement as they snap.

I ran my 130 for years without the inners and stock 330lb main springs. (Tdi)
The car tared between 2650 and 2950kg without driver.

OK so you guys are suggesting that I remove the inner spring to help with ride - not required for my light usage, and also to add some type of retainer? My local mechanic has just fitted new shocks all round, wish I was aware of this at the time. He advised to go with EFS.

Can't see why you couldn't retain the springs you have top and bottom, shouldn't be to hard.

Thanks guys for your input. This has steered me to the Kingpin HD Spring Clamp, ordered today.

Have you thought of getting rid of them and putting a beefier outer spring and Air-Man Airbags? I did this and it is a phenomenal improvement. I can also change the ride depending on how much weight I am carrying or what type of terrain I am traversing from a simple 2 valve setup on the side of the vehicle

The problem of the spring coming out appears to be that the shock absorber is too long and doesn't suit the spring. The best choice is to put a shorter shock absorber or a longer spring. You could also put a spring spacer in which will raise the the spring up to compensate for the extra travel.
If you like the current height of your 130 get the shop that sold you the shockers, to supply you the correct length set of shocks.

increasing the retainer strength is only needed for extreme travel setups

Thanks for the input guys. I have committed to the King Pin HD Spring Clamps for now so with the longer shocks it should give me a bit more travel but I do have to remove the inner springs. I wish I had have know about the damper length before order the new dampers - oh well!
