I saw a 130 at the dealers in that was only cab and chassis, as I can remember looking at the suspension. Whether they were all like that I cannot tell you.

						Hello All,
Did the traybacks on the 110 Defenders get delivered to the dealers as a bare chassis and trays were made by local companies? Or were the vehicles supplied to the dealership with the tray as a factory finished product when they were first sold?
Snowy my 110 has a tongue and groove hardwood floor with steel sides. One of my Series 3 which a former guru at this site identified as a top options pack from the main dealer, came with a factory-fitted bull bar and high steel sides - with a hardwood floor. Another one of my Series 3s came fitted with an all aluminium tray and sides. From what I can work out from the scalloped-out rope tie-down points it too was a factory finish. Useless tie-down points - but a factory finish!
Just wondering whether Snowy's steel sides and hardwood floor were a factory finish or a local product?
Kind regards
Lionel

SupporterMy 130 was delivered as a cab/chassis. National Parks (NSW) had the tray put on in Tamworth by Obieco.
Don.
My 130 was also a cab chassis but that doesn't mean that there weren't dealer specials in the past that included a tray. Logistically getting a tray fitted to a new car is a PITA and the dealer has to facilitate it before rego anyway. Much easier to sell a drive away vehicle, so its quite possible your 110 may have been a dealer or LR Australia supplied tray

I don't know, but I suspect that as Landrover assembly ceased in Australia when the Defender was introduced (and no Defenders were sold here for several years after that to try and shift buyers to the Discovery), that all were imported as cab/chassis and all trays were local - although "local" could mean made by a large scale manufacturer who made almost identical trays for multiple car brands and supplying state/nationwide or a local bodybuilder.
Trayback four wheel drives have always been a niche product except in Australia, as far as I am aware.

My 130 was a cab chassis. tray was fitted by dealer but my tray was a comp tray stolen from a patrol, made to fit the LR. Dealer had tray laying around and we negotiated a price. When i was looking to buy, every cab chassis in dealers i saw were bare. Thats not to say the dealer had some package with tray in waiting if the buyer asked.

Gone: (Dorothy) MY99 TD5 D110
The alternative to organising my own tray for the 130 was a HCPU so from a land rover perspective they did have a ready to go option. I Agree with JDNSW, certainly in the US, the only time you see anything smaller than a F250 size vehicle with anything other than a ute tub is if it is very specialised such as a cherry picker or tow truck.
There are many yards in rural NSW filled with Ranger and Hilux tubs where people have bought an upspec vehicle and pulled the tub off to fit a tray because only lower spec vehicles have a cab chassis option available.

...and NZ... common here to see 4x4 wellsides replaced by trayback or as we call them, flatdecks.
As far as I am aware, there were very few HCPU 110s delivered to NZ and so the 110s arrived as CKD kits as a cab/chassis and the flatdeck was installed to the new owners spec's.

SupporterMy td5 Ute which I bought new in Bathurst in 2000 has an ICR engineering steel tray which are built in Blayney not far from Bathurst. I had a 300Tdi Ute bought new from Garthon Land Rover in Sydney in 96 had the same tray. I also had a 96 300Tdi single cab 130 (ex Calvert expedition) fitted out as one of two tucker trucks in support of the expedition and that had a timber floor and was built in Perth under contract to Land Rover UK.
