    300Tdi dual batteries

    Hi team

One of my plans for the Easter break is to install a dual battery system in the Tdi. I have an SC80 split charge unit from Tim at Traxide but am trying to figure out which auxiliary battery I can install in the battery box.

Height is the big challenge as the inboard side of the battery box (the floor that is) is higher than the out board which you may be able to see in the photo.

I was looking at an N70T Century (on special @ Supercheap for a couple of days, save around $60) but this is the same hight as the cranking battery which is an N70ZZX and only just clears the cover.

    Any suggestions? I am on a budget….

    Cheers Simon

I had an N70ZZ plus a similar sized deep cycle and the terminals are very close to the steel cover, never had a problem though.

I'll see if I can dig out a photo of the current arrangement. I used some timber so the the battery sat on a level area. The hold-down was temporary (already fitted by previous owner) but has been OK since 1998 when I got the Defender.

Split charge is by an early Piranha unit which is no longer made, seems to work OK.

    Thanks Colin

Would be very grateful of some pics. This is a 96 Tdi. My td5 has a flat bottom in the battery box and can easily accommodate N70Z size batteries but the uneven bottom in the Tdi is presenting issues.

    No issues with the 300Tdi.

First picture shows some plywood & a timber strip to level the floor.
Second picture shows two N70ZZ and a very old split charge relay (not much room left).
Third picture shows the current setup with a slightly smaller deep cycle battery.

A lot of this was temporary some 20 odd years ago but still OK !

The thin strap across the deep cycle has always worried me in case it damaged the battery but never a problem.

    Thanks Colin

That’s very helpful. So all the a/c fuses and relays have been moved to the rear.
What’s the smaller deep cycle battery?

The layout is how it was when I purchased it so not sure if the relays were moved.
I'd have to see if I have a picture of the battery before it was installed. It's the second smaller deep cycle I've had fitted, went to the battery supplier and looked for one a bit smaller than the N70ZZ.

    Found it Ritar RA12-75
Hopefully a battery supplier can find this or an equivalent.
