    Crank Position Sensor woes

    Hey All,

so after days and days of troubleshooting I finally got the new TD5 in the defender to start and run after replacing a bunch of things but most recently the fuel pump. It ran poorly (missing) for about 5min and now it wont start at all. In the previous rounds of troubleshooting I replaced the CPS, and now have the "High Speed Crank (Current)" fault on the nanocom, which was not there before. The sensor looks like it has contacted the flywheel, you can see the mark in the pic. While mucking about with it I broke the plug off, because the loom is stiff and brittle (of course) - I have replaced that with a redundant plug from somewhere else and checked a fair way back along the loom and cant see any other damage.

What I dont understand is that now I get the "High Speed Crank" fault as soon as I turn the ignition on, without having cranked the engine. Same fault appears with the CPS completely disconnected and with the old sensor, none of this happened before.

I've cleaned the ECU plugs and checked them, no damage that I can see.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Adam

[Edit: I know there's a spacer shim that can be fitted, I'm guessing my new flywheel is slightly larger in diameter than the old one so I will fit the shim with a new sensor when I get to that]

well of course there's no actual logic in the solution, but the reason the High Speed Crank fault wouldn't clear was because the fuel temp sensor was unplugged (I had a fuel pressure gauge installed there as part of previous troubleshooting). So after refitting and attaching the fuel temp sensor the crank fault goes away.

Cool, great system, easy to diagnose faults, 5 stars, no notes.....

Car still wont start but hey we can't have everything.

oh, and I simulated having the spacer in the CPS by using a 0.5mm washer - the CPS doesn't read correctly with that fitted. So I have no idea where to go from here.
