    Two seperate issues there. What's the engine like on power? OK, it's a 300TDi, but it should be pretty good in a Series. Not a rocket, but not holding up traffic either. If the pump is set to provide too much fuel then the power would most likely be high for a 300, but the smoke would be black. If the pump was too advanced you would get knock.
    Too me, what you are describing seems more like fuel vapour rather than smoke. Now, possibly the IP is retarded and what you are seeing is unburned fuel, which could explain the smell.
    Robmacca asked about IP timing. I think he's probably on the money. It's simple enough to check if you know how, and it's also simple enough to get wrong, especially in the engine rebuild process. I'd start there.
