2.4 Glow Plug Change and Manifold Carbon

Blown away by the carbon build up. Very thick. I can clean plastic manifold and have new seals but is it OK to leave the carbon build up on the engine side? Don't want to push it into the motor.

Might get mum's vacuum cleaner onto it. Used the pneumatic vacuum to clean the gunk/WD40 from the glowplug holes...worked well.

Hey Tikka, I have put off the same procedure for months with cold starts taking a while to fire up on cold mornings. Hoping plugs are intact and extract easy! Did you install inlet seals dry as they come or apply sealant? Mine has a reasonable amount of oil leaking from somewhere but assuming it coming from a crap seal as I have no catch can… Cheers

I got the seals from KLR in Aussie, haven't put them in yet. I think they go in dry...look like they are well seated in the plastic manifold.

Yeah my truck was becoming hard to start, pretty cold where I am. Lots of smoke, rough idle until the motor ran a little bit and settled down.

Or a Land Cruiser 1 VD.
A mate had his apart recently,in some places it was over 10mm thick.
Huge job to get it apart, clean, and put back together.

yes most half modern direct injection diesel or petrol suffer this.

there are businesses around that do intake cleaning, i consider this a total bull**** job for a problem that doesnt exist.

go for big long runs and or get the egr tuned out (if legal in the state/country/planet you live in)

Yep my planet allows EGR turn off. Did it on the D4 SDV6 and runs 7.9-8.4l/100km.

Had it turned off on our D4,once out of warranty, and tuned.

Turning it off voids any engine warranty, and most new vehicles have 5yrs plus these days.

Saw a vid on U tube recently, late model diesel Prado with the latest Scan guage, showing EGR position. The EGR was something like 35% open when the vehicle was cruising at 100Km/hr.
