    Upgraded Puma Airbox

Has anyone tried the Allisport upgrade? I’d love a Nugget one but I missed the window for availability

Measure the filter effective area of the allisport version. If cylinder use the cylinder area formula. If a panel, measure the heightxwidth. A puma panel is 121 in sq. If alisport version is smaller, you are taking a step back. For example, the patrol 4.2 and 79 series V8 filters are measurably smaller than the puma panel (107 in sq).

another thing to take into account is the snorkel. When i had a mantec snorkel and nugget air filter box, i could hear the engine deep breathing under full noise. Like an asthmatic. With the safari snorkel, the asthmatic breathing went away. Same intake pipe from snorkel to air box.

i’ve done a round of the block and formed view that the factory box/filter is adequate for any power levels the puma can muster up.

Don't forget to get some spare clips to keep the box closed. Sometimes, if rusted, they break. Part number is WYC100560

    WYC100560 - CLIP - RETAINING | LR Parts

Good points re square area and I'll ask Allisport that question. The other main attraction though is waterproofness. I'm concerned the factory plastic box isn't entirely reliable...?

I think that if the factory fitted airbox is closed correctly it is waterproofed enough for everyday usage and rain. Cannot comment on wading. I have never seen moisture in mine.

I've had the Puma over the bonnet deep water with the factory and Nugget air filter box. both times with a sealed snorkel. both filter boxes were dry on the backside of the crossing. i didn't hang around for the engine bay to fill up. if i stopped i would expect both to leak water but if that happened, i'd kill the engine. i'm a bit taller than most. 35" rubber and air suspension that i can lift to + 4". when lifted, the bottom of the door is 700mm off the ground. if you plan to cross water deep enough to potentially wet out the air filter box, you should be taking precautions to minimise damage. wading blanket, rigged up with tow strap and rescue vehicle on stand by. Older i get, less enthusiastic about putting my car bonnet deep in water.

pretty sure Allisport quote the filter part ref. Cross reference it with Donaldson which will give you the specs. that assumes you are talking about their racing air filter housings, not there TD5 replacement housing.

*there is no performance gain by fitting an aftermarket air box.
*the standard air box isnt water proof as it has numerous holes in it pre-filter.
*if you remove it, remove the cyclonic spool thing, seal up all the holes and its fine.
*when fitting the pad filter I always spray a bead of silicone spray round the seal.

*the standard air filter / box combination is about on par for dust proof. the above spray helps.
*the nugget stuff (alloy one) can be made to be dust proof, but I have only seen one of my customers achieve this because he is extremely particular with detail.
*the plastic nugget stuff is crap and have had numerous ones pull apart where they are screwed together.

*is that very fine amount of dust in the intake going to instantly dust an engine, no its not. consider the oil in the intake will suck up some of it, i'd say most of it, its prolly not going to knock that much off the life of the engine.

*to be fair though, the old style Land Cruiser and hi-lux big arse round one they used for just about a lifetime were a good filter and fitted really well.

I had a 2010 Puma w safari snorkel and sealed all holes/weak points and checked air box seal regularly but she still let water in on creek crossings over the bonnet.
Scrubby Creek on Cape Yorke was 1.5m and the puma went into limp mode most of the way across, steam came out of exhaust for a few minutes after exit Upgraded Puma AirboxUpgraded Puma Airbox
    Id upgrade it……

on one trip to outback Oz with lots of dirt driving, when i got home and inspected the engine, the fine grit had chipped the leading edge of the turbo turbine. Cost me a turbo. granted the lid to the filter housing was not clamped down as it could have been.

I'd add that the nugget perspex lid does not like some degreasing chemicals. I hazzed and cracked my perspex cover with a degreaser i got from Supercheap.

Thanks for the feedback. Last night I removed the air box - such a PITA. I took out the impeller (quite a blockage I thought) and dremeled the intake inside the box to free it up. Will drive this morning and see if any difference including placebo effect!
