Thread: Lost a wheel

As a teenager, a brother of mine broke all the studs on a left wheel of his recently-acquired AP6 Valiant when trying to undo them, then spotted the L on the end of a stud.

This morning I pulled the wheel off (again!) and ran the die nut over the thread of each stud - some only needed a spanner for the last couple of turns, two were spanner all the way.

And that was an issue - I had neither socket nor tube spanner large enough (42mm), so had to use an OE spanner at 1/6 turn per go. And the clearance from the hub is barely enough for a socket or tube even if I had one

Replacing the wheel was a lot easier than getting it off - spin all nuts on with a 1/2" adapter in the battery drill, then torque them up. I will check them at the gate on my next trip (probably just to the village on Sunday).

With 5-stud wheels, remove one nut from each of the other wheels and one from the spare (on a Defender) and you have 4 nuts to get you home. Been there, done that.

Good thing to remember…I know that somewhere within the car they’ll be 4 or 5 of those bolts and a flange

I first had extensive experience with Landcruisers in 1965-6 in the Simpson, my employer having re-equipped with them. Driving in the sandhills all the time, with oversize (9.00x13) tyres run at low pressures, we did a lot of pulling wheels on and off.

By the end of the job, every Landcruiser glovebox had a handful of new wheel studs, and most of us were adept at replacing studs as a routine part of changing wheels.

(And rattle guns were not even dreamed of.)

Yep wheel studs weigh bugger all…I’ve got 3 odd in the car
Scary, I haven’t experienced that ..it’d be like the bonnet of an s series valiant opening at 90 kph

The only vehicle I've ever had do that was the same FJ45 toyota that lost a wheel.
