Muppet is spot on. You can jump in and out at night without your eyes struggling to adjust.
The Mud lights have a selector switch so you can have Red or White light.
I put TF Roof Console in my one, so lost the ground plate and the factory wires are a mile short now. The Mud light has long wires that just clipped straight in, so easy. Works on the door too.
I recalled the night vision trick - in my early camping days with the old man, he had a ex vietnam torch with the red filter cap.
Does that light still work with the existing light timer circuit? Obviously LED so less current draw and better overall light?
What about the red functionality... do you find it a useful feature or just a 'look what I've got' mod?
I'm red green colourblind... so not sure if it will work on me![]()

Yes it still works with the timer function.
I converted the D4 map lights to Red when I got it - makes a big difference - passenger can read, navigate etc without distracting driver or disrupting vision.
Not sure how this will work for you - give it a test!!!
Still - worth bling points regardless. But yes works.
We used red filters for night navexs on cadets, no issue with functionality except if people had drawn on the maps in a funky coloured texta.

Computer says no:
"you are definitely not able to preserve night vision by using red light"
Essentially you are just dimming the light. Same deal with fox hunting with a red light. Just dims it's a little. The red spectrum can't be totally isolated by a filter or light.

human anatomy - Does red light preserve your night vision? - Biology Stack Exchange
I remember reading a study by the US Navy on the topic. Red lights seem to preserve night vision the best, as the human eye doesn't see red particularly well. So if you have various coloured filters over the one light, red would be the best as it would be the darkest to the eye. The study said the best colour for preserving night vision is green, as the human eye sees it very well indeed and so the light can be significantly dimmer and have the same effective illumination.
Search google for fighter jet cockpits and see what comes up.
Red light is also used when setting up the telescope, setting up gear at night to get time lapse pics etc. Same reason.
