Thread: Rear Cross member rust

Hey guys...

I have a fair bit of rust in the corners of the rear crossmember on my 85 county...

Seeing that its just in the corners, I am thinking I will just chop them off from the outside of the chassis and weld some new ends on..

My other option mabey would be cut the whole crossmember out, Fix the rust and then design it so It could be just bolted back on... That way I could do a sort of custom bar on the back

What r your thoughts... Has anyone repaired or modified one before ?

There is a thred on here that has pics and info on cutting the corners off and replacing them!
Also you have similar plans to what we have with cutting it off then fixing it but we have decided to build a whole new one to suit our needs including a wheel carrier built on some high lift jacking points,recovery points,a tongue stile tow bar eg like a disco one! and somehow making a bolt on bracket or something to make it easier to remove in the future.
Another reason for building a whole new one is because we are going to get it hot dipt galvenized then paint it black!

If you decide to cut it off and costomise it i'd love to see some pics
We will post up a thred when we get in to it but that could be quite a while
