New Defender dual batteries

Hi guys, an old post but I was wounding if we can update it a little. I have a DEKA AGM battery which I would like to use as the auxiliary.

It's 13" (330mm)L x 7" (175mm)W x 9 1/4" (235mm)H.

Piranha make a battery tray to fit post 07 defenders, but it only accommodates up to a 10" (254mm)L battery according to Piranha. And it can't be modified.

Has anyone fitted bigger then a 10inch battery in the original battery box? Is this possible?

I have heard some turn the battery tray 90° to accommodate bigger batteries. But I assume these would be after market trays, but have no idea of brand.

Your new Defender won't have a tray as such - the battery sits in the box under the passenger seat. The Varta cranker that comes with the Defy is a large battery too - you might be able to fit your aux in there too - just wait until Saturday and see. ;)

But otherwise - there are other options for the additional battery - mine isn't with the cranker.

This set up has a custom plate fitted to the bottom of the box to provide a flat base with tie down points. The original starter is fitted east west at the rear with an allrounder 105 ah in the front, cost was less than a piranha tray for I think a better outcome.

Stevencam, perfect, that's what I'm hoping to do.
Mine is a 105amp, and it makes sense to have them both in the same spot for many reasons.
I may have to get my local metal fabricator to do some magic if the market suppliers only cater for small batteries, which it looks like.

Mine looks very similar to yours stevecam, except I kept them running North/South and I seem to have a few more wires jammed into the small box!

The only thing is I am contemplating trying to remove most of the wiring from the box, cutting a few big holes through the back of the box and making a large fuse box with circuit breakers and battery isolation switches in the foot well of the rear passenger side seat. Much better for problem solving, future proofing and incase of emergency you can get to it real quick!

That's where I have my auxiallary fuses in the Td5....under the cubby box. main feed is brought from the starter motor rather than the battery and is fed up through the hole under the cubby box.

Yeah its a really tight fit, makes access to the fuse block and controller difficult, thankfully have not had any problems that needed emergency access.

Just as a thought, I recently had all accessory wires placed in the area under the drivers seat. Now have the following fitted their.

UHF Radio main body
anderson plug cable with fuse
Brake Controller wiring with fuse
2 x fuse boxes

The Auto Elect that did this for me has allowed me to reduce wiring in the Barttery bay. It is a little busy underneath but much easier for problem solving than the battery box. In saying that I still have a couple of items directly wire to the 2nd battery.

Good idea but, I already have Amplifier, GPS, Revearsing camera, aux power outlets all under there! So no room in this location! :o
