    1999 TD5 ECU remapping?

    As the finances have recently changed (for the worse) I will now be looking for TD5 defenders. I found one on 'Carsales' in bendigo Vic (see link below) that I could afford ($19990, 1999 TD5) and need advise or information on whether anyone has had these ECU's remapped and where can I get this done (am in Melbourne). I have read somewhere that the ECU on pre 2002 TD5's are 'program once only' ECUs but can be swapped for flashable ECU's.

    My '99 TD5 was remapped by Bruce Davis, done through my local LR service guy - has a few niggles but they have since changed the remapping, although i am happy with my truck.
    Don't know about swapping ECU's though - will be interesting to see the results you get here

    Yep you're right you can swap around the ecu's as long as you have access to someone with Rovacom, or a Nanocom type device.

    Any manual TD5 ecu can be made to run any manual td5. ie a 2004 Discovery 2 can run a 1999 Defender. (I think Auto ones can probably be swapped too but I am not as certain)

    I know this as I have a big pile of ecu's all set to run my 90. 2 are flashable, 2 aren't and 1 of the flashable ones is a Discovery 2.

    Setting them up takes about 15 minues (or thats what it took me to do some of mine anyway)

    One thing to note is if you run a Disco 2 one on a Defender the temp gauge goes backwards.

    The top guy hardwires in a 'chip upgrade', the next two operate via a piggy back system, and I believe someone on here does the ECU swap that the last place offers. Check 'em out, you'll find what you need.

    When the Engine Control Module in my 99 Td5 died, M R Automotive couldn't get a new defender one, so got a new discovery one and remapped it. So I should now have a flashable one. Drives 100% better than it ever did with the old chipped one.

    They changed to one part number. I think NNN000120, and stopped supplying the earlier ones (MSB.....). I know mine, a 2001 runs worlds better on the D2 Ecu in terms of power than on any of the others. It has recorded 101mph (over 160KPH) on GPS and it was still going. Only no rev counter stopped me trying any higher!

    Just out of interest if you dont mind me asking what do MR charge for an ECU?

    Edited to add, the earlier non flashable ones (msb...) can be set up to run any td5, just not have the fueling map changed unless you solder in a new chip.

    It cost me $1500 new plus labour over 12 months ago. I was cheezed at the time but the driveability increase is awesome. The old ECM had a wicked chip soldered in but drove like a 2 stroke. Sat on 160 all the way from Boonah to Yamanto one night. I have a tacho fitted and there was a little bit more revs to go and the tyres has 75psi in them.

    At the time they tried to get a second hand one, but were unable, so it had to be new. This is why I'm pretty certain it is now a flashable one.
