    Question Why so dear

Hi Guys just wondering if anyone knows the answer to this.
I was looking at getting a dual cab 130 but couldn't justify the extra few thousand dollars as it comes with less options (traction control/abs, mag wheels) and is also a cab-chassie so there is an extra cost then to put a tray on it.The plan was to have a ute for the motor bikes, a custom back for my work stuff (electrical contractor) then a camping back that i could interchange. The extra approx $4000 before i even had any backs made. No one seems to be able to tell me why they are so dear considering there is less "stuff" on it. Admittedly it is 500mm longer but it should still be cheaper. So why is it dearer?
    Regards:

Since when has car pricing ever made sense

It's no different to all the other reasoning that must go on within Land Rover...

They only import a few Defenders because demand is low so if you want something other than the colour they have in stock, you have to wait for it to come from the UK. So why not simply make available all the models from the UK or at least make the models available here the same spec and not a hybrid of the 110 or 130 range. Then you could order what you want every time.

Iv'e asked about this - One of the reasons is that each defender model that is brought into the country has to be made ADR compliant. Apparently quite a few minor changes are required - headlights/indicators and many other minor changes are made for Australia. And this is apparently quite a costly process. So rather than do this repeatedly for multiple models they only do it on the ones they choose.

As BilboBoggles says. Each model sold in Australia has to be certified as complying with ADRs. Even though most of the changes to meet these will be the same for the 110 and 130, the whole process has to be gone through for both. As far fewer 130s are sold, the cost of this is divided by the much smaller number to get that part of the cost, so the cost base for the 130 DC is probably higher than the 110 anyway. Then they have to decide what to price it at, only vaguely based on the cost. One factor will be what the competition is - and the 130 DC has no close competitors, and although the 110 does not have exactly direct competitors, it does have ones that are closer.

Makes you wonder how Jeeps can be so cheap then?

Oh, wait a minute, I think that question answers itself.

I agree with your winge. Even if it just included ABS/TC and was a few thousand more again it would be fine. The dealer told me it was due the the GVM , and that "trucks only recently have added ABS". Apparently the 3050kg->3500kg difference is massive lol.

The lack of TC means that lockers add another few thousand dollars to reach (or maybe exceed) the capability of the 110.
So in reality, its $3k more for the DCPU, another few thousand for a custom tray, and another few thousand for lockers. It winds up being $10k more expensive. That makes it a haaaaard choice to justify.

    Cheers!

Not sure where you are located but the dealer in Cairns called the other day (i must have given my number at some stage) wanting to offload a silver 130 for $51k drive away... I have no desire for a transit fender but it may factor nicely for you. I dont even know if thats a good price?

A 130 will never be as capable as a 110 in the tight stuff, locker or not - the rear spring rate and wheel base will ensure that. Buy a winch instead of lockers! But on the fast dirt getting there the 130 will out ride the 110 on the terrain. 17" makes a goodly difference on fast dirt.

Obviously building trays will cost bucks but it seems 1.8 by 1.8m trays come up pretty regularly in the papers?

I had hesitations about getting a 130 upgrading from a disco... there is no way I would ever go back to a disco/ranga or even 110 the DC with tray is the ultimate tool!
