    New Puma/ rustproofing and warranty

    Hi Just got a 2008 110 tdci with 11000km and looking underneath
    of course there is not any apparent "rustproofing" unlike on my td5 which had the full "black Tar" type treatment
    If i do some rustproofing myself will it affect the corrision warranty, I will be asking here in New Zealand to the importers but just want to check what the
    attitude in Australia is (if any)
    We cannot get waxoyl here (which is messy anyway)
    what are other people using?
    Any help appreciated

    Hi

    I went with the "belt 'n' braces" approachin my new Puma. To be sure to be sure.

    I have gone for the underbody spray and the electronic protection.

    Both were fitted by Tint a Car in Burswood, Perth, and came highly recomended from a few different 4WD shops.

    The spray is a dark gold colour and doesnt quite set. so far it seems ok, and cleans up easily with a hose after a bit of mud or beach work.

    The electonic box mounts in the battery box and ins one of those capacitance style units, (as opposed to a sacrificial annode used in boating)

    I've only had the the thing a year, and had the protection applied within hours of delivery. only time will tel if it works or not, but hey... I intend having this one for at least a decade or two.

    Thanks for that, when you say underbody spray what do mean? bitumen trype for special purpose paint?

    There was a lot of talk back when the 07MY Defender came out about the factory "rust-proofing". That is to say, there was none. The stuff Land Rover sprayed on the underbody was, by their admission, only to protect the vehicle during transportation and not to be considered as an alternative to full rust proofing. Many people in the UK were complaining how poor the coverage was and that is what Land Rover responded with.

    That said, I have not heard of any aftermarket rust-proofing affecting the standard corrosion warranty. There is another thread here discussing that but I can't see how anything a customer does to improve the protection of their vehicle could ever conflict with the standard warranty.

    When I had mine done it was straight off the truck and done by one of the usual dealer organised mobs (I think it was Ming - black goo, really messy). The only rule then was that the vehicle had to have never been on road (or off for that matter). They wanted it straight off the flatbed or insisted on doing a full underbody steam clean. Having said that, there is just no substitute for thorough cleaning and flushing of the chassis rails after any off-road trip. And I honestly don't think any expensive rust-proofing system is still much better than drowning the thing in fish-oil on a regular basis - it just smells less.

    Yes, I think there is no better way then to clean it up and a bit of oil, the black tar as lasted 9 years on myb7d5 with only afew bare pataches but i was
    diligent in cleaning it out after trips

    I taped up all the holes in my defender and poured a litre of lanolin oil in the chassis and in the doors and floor.It worked for me. Pat

    It was a special purpose paint. I was just having a look, but I cant seem to find the information that I got from Tint-a-Car.

    You could give them a ring and ask...

    thanks for that, I think a special paint is the way here as its available and I have been told that the"tar" type can trap water behind it

    Valvoline Tectyl 506 is most likely what that golden spray is - It's a cavity wax that many people also use under their vehicle. It's unique property is that if it's damaged (Stone chip etc) the wax flows and covers the hole. You can get it from Valvoline dealers or service stations that stock valvoline oils - I had to order it though. When it's initially sprayed on, it flows really well, then dries to a harder waxy surface. Valvoline do many different types of waxes - including an undercarriage wax that is black. But from all accounts I've read the 506 is the way to go, might not look as pretty but stays around much longer. A transparent waxy coating in my opinion is much better than heavy black coatings - because you can see minor rust before it gets a chance to do too much damage. I've got a couple of 2a's with really nice looking tar covered chassis that you can knock holes in with a screwdriver.

    I dumped 4 liters under my Puma, used a engine degreaser gun which worked heaps better than the underseal gun I bought for the job.
