Yeah, agree re the comment on DC joint - even when rebuilt with greasable uni joints, the DC can still fail if you don't pull out the grease gun every once in a while. More topups required if you do a significant amount of water crossings. The greasable unis just prolong the inevitable.
I think this is more of an issue with the Discovery II V8 due to two factors which may not affect a Defender as much:
1. Airconditioning condensate dripping onto the DC
2. Searing heat radiated from the catalytic converter which will accelerate the drying out of the grease in the unis.
Or maybe it's coz the V8 has more power?
