It is right in line to pick up any spray coming off of the wheel. Can't believe they didn't think of that when they originally put it there.
Couldn't work out how to get the clip off (I wanted to put it on the other side of the panel it is clipped to) so I have just extended it by about 300mm and poked the end out of the way of the water spray from the rear wheel. That should do the job.
The official "fix" for breathers located in this position is to unclip the tube and shove it under the black plastic plate that covers the passenger side rear lights (from the inside of the wheel arch) - accessed from under the rear passenger wheel arch. I placed mine there in Alice Springs and have hardly had any crap in the fuel filter since.
