Thats how ours is doing (going into the stealers tomorrow for a check over).
Cold morning - may or may not have been damp, and generally between 2nd and 3rd gear changes - could be 50mtrs down the road or 500 - never any further. Engine light goes on and the car runs like a chaff cutter. Has happened 3 times and each time have turned it off - waited 25-30minutes - started it and it runs beautifully. Have had the RACV and Dealer look at it - going in again to be checked. Why wait the 30 mins - because thats the time it takes for a flatbed to get out to us at a minimum.
Its stored outside overnight so the temp can vary from - figures to 16. Only happens when it a COLD morning but then not every cold morning....though we are fairly close to the coast also so the temp fluctuates a fair bit.

Honestly I can't believe this we have had this problem for over a year and now others have got it....I'm not happy you guys have got the problem but because we were the only ones with the issue it was making us look like lyres every time we took it to the dealer and they said they couldn't hear anything...

I'm SOOOOOOO pleased we are not alone any more.

The way you have described it is EXCATLY WHAT WE HAD and happens in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY!!.......Yeah after 18months we now have two cars display the exact same characteristics and what appears kept in the same conditions! what year is yours?
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

This has happened to me twice in my 08 Puma. I live in Fremantle and had it first occur in March (quite warm) and the second time May down in Yallingup... generally cleared itself in about 30sec... 2nd - 3rd gear and 500m down the track is similar to my experience... but thinking about it last winter / spring was OK...

I regularly visit Pradopoint.com and I have noticed a very similar problem to the one you are describing is happening to the D4D diesel motors in the Prado, look here

sound like a common problem in the latest diesel motors using Australian diesel. Not sure if this is happening O/S as the D4D motor was released quite a while O/S before Australia

Question to all that have had this... Have you continued to drive with the light on or do you stop?
The engine does return to normal pretty quickly but the light doesnt disappear until (in our case) we turn the engine off. Seems to be a 30 minute reset cycle as you can start it 10 minutes or 25 minutes later with the warning light still on - 30 minutes and its gone.
Personally - when the chaff cutter kicks in we pull over and kill the engine -Only once has it happened where I 'felt / sensed' the engine clatter so took the car out of gear and reved the engine- the clatter disappeared and the light stayed off. Took all of 30 seconds but its the only time it hasn't kicked in. If anything is found today - I'll post it.
Have - like Scallops -prewarmed the engine on days of ice/frost to prevent the issue - and it seems to work but as its so intermittent - who knows...

this post has been put up before it has similarities but its not the same! there knocking comes from start up, the way I read it is they turn the eninge ove and the knocking is evident.....where as ours comes on about 500 meters up the road and only for 30sec and often put the car into limp mode
