Is anyone aware of a cruise control pack available for a pre-2002 TD5 Defender?
All my research so far is only throwing up later model set ups, but the vehicles I'm considering purchasing are all earlier models with no c/c fitted.

						as far as I know, there are a few possibillities with aftermarket cc's , but they are REALLY expensive if they are integrated with the ECU. It might be a better option to buy the defender you like, then put in a flashable ECU which will also include the cruise control functionallity, and allow you to flash the ECU with an upgraded map.......
The other option is your standard "universal" aftermarket cruise, and fit it so it operates the pedal directly, it can be done if you are technically able....

I've bought the car now and it's 1999 ... hence the problem. It's been chipped already and certainly when combined with the ecoshot has more get up and go than the standard TD5 (bear in mind this is based on short test drives of a standard vs test drive of the one I'm buying). There's been so much done to the car that it seems like the only thing left is c/c
... flashable ECU? Can you enlighten me further.
Regarding technical capability I've changed gearboxes, distributors, suspension, etc, etc, etc, in old Triumphs, but my wiring competence stretches no further than fitting relays to Lucas lights. Frankly ECUs and drive by wire is scary.
I normally work to my own special 1 in 3 rules. Simple really. If I start the job there is a 1 in 3 chance that I'll get someone else to finish it, or if i fix it myself then I 'develop' 3 more jobs along the way

						The later TD5's have a different engine ECU, and it can be "chipped" by simply plugging in a laptop and "flashing" the new map or "program" into it.
I'm pretty sure that all the flashable ECU's have the cruise control built in, you just need to connect 2 push button switches to the ECU and it just works, all the other wiring etc is done. I think there are some "drive by wire" cruise options for the earlier ones, but they are really expensive.
As I mentioned earlier, you could just get a universal cruise control and fit that, the trickiest bit would be connecting the actuator cable to the pedal to get the right amount of movement.

I know my Dad's fitted a universal kit before and he reckoned it was easy enough. His was cheap but the only ones i'm seeing online aren't.
Are the ECU's interchangeable? ie could I pick up a MY02 ECU and swap it over? That would be preferable but might be more hassle than it's worth

						As far as I know it is a straight swap, then just wire in the 2 switches, and away you go....
Talk to "Tombie2" about it, he's the expert. I think there is just a few settings to be programmed into the "new" ECU, injector codes and the type of throttle position sensor that your car has.
This is the sort of thing I fitted to my TDi 300 Defender, but I connected the actuator to the injection pump, you will need to connect it to the pedal somehow.
If you have the funds, I'd go the ECU way....

The newer ECU will fit the older models. Just get the injector codes done.
Got a quote last week of $900 to get a flashable ECU for my 2002 130 (not sure if that was new or S/H, but I presumed S/H). Then another $500-$700 on top to get it flashed with a higher output map. Am thinking about it, but a bit much for me at the moment (maybe after my Tax Refund...)
