I warned him that he may be bombarded with questions from people on his travels and that he should have a look at AULRO

Hmmm.... If you see him again, you might want to warn him that the Red Crescent lot get touchy about the use of their logos. The G4 cars should have had the logos removed.

Also, if you do see him again, get his VIN and PM it over... There weren't many 110s made for 2009.

    Special order somehow?
That's why it'd be interesting to check the VIN...

There were 4x commercial 110s made for the recce and a further 2x made for the event. Thing is, I did hear that at least one of them was on its way to Oz so I'm wondering if this is that one.

There were two G4-spec* Defender 110 wagons brought over to Australia, both now sold. One is based in SA and the other is in Victoria (as shown by the plate you forgot to blank ;-) ) The logos were not required to be removed before they were sold to private owners. Whether that was correct or not is another matter.

    * definition of said spec varies, but hey it's Tangiers orange with the G4 stickers...

The logos should have been removed before they left the UK...

Anyway, I'm beginning to suspect that these are the 2x 110s built for the event. If you ever bump into them again, do us a favour and make a note of the VIN numbers.

No, those 110s were purpose-built for the Australian selections and as general promo cars along with two D3s. So they needed their stickers officially in Australia. There are also Aussie flags on them as well.

Compared to the "Mongolian spec" 110s these had a different cargo barrier, no rear wheel carrier or rear bar, possibly other differences.

Not quite, one owner opted to remove them, the other opted to keep them and the rest of the car "G4 spec".
