    PUMA REAR DIFF LEAK

its happened to me again. this is the second time in 7 months i have an oil leak in the rear diff. it seems to be coming from the same place as last time (the seal where the tailshaft enters. does anyone have any ideas why this would happen 2 times in such a short period of time?

I would investigate if the OD of the seal is correct or fit to loose on the the diff, then the same with the ID of the seal. It is a double leap seal?
If all is ok with the seal and the bore on the diff and diameter of the shaft, then I would ask to look into aligment issues.
The problem is that with new vehicles some times the service manager do not like to hearing suggestions by customers

    Ah.... the pinion seal.

Mine has developed very slight weep after 18000 km and will be seen to soon.

Others including Derek (dm_td5) have had this happen.

As to the cause and more importantly the permanent cure I watch this space.

My 2008 Defender had a rear diff pinion seal leak and a slight clicking noise when the drive train took up in either direction. Diff centre was out of spec and was replaced under warranty .( 17000 km ).

Mine's fine now. Piunion seal seems to be about as good as on the Td5 and Tdi for staying whole

No they swapped from leather back on the Tdi to a synthetic equivalent - at least as far as the leaking ability goes

    I don't know .

Not happy when there's no rust proofing one minute.
Not happy when there is rust proofing the next.

How's your breather look? Not kinked or blocked at all?
