I would doubt that is right - they are not going to use a new engine 2 years before bringing out an all new Defender - I call bogus.
I read in the Melbourne Age today "Drive" that there is a new engine planned for the Defender in 2011 before a complete update in 2014.
Anyone else heard anything? The main article was on the Disco 4.

My guess what engine they use will be in the lap of Ford and Euro standards whether the current Transit engine will be available for the Defender or they'll have to use what is available.
Weren't the contracts signed between Ford and Tata only for supply for four years? That would make the contract expire in 2012 and Tata may indeed choose to use an alternate such as something from Fiat with whom they already have ongoing contracts with.
What specifics did the Age article have?
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
There was no specifics, just an article on the new Disco, obviously driven in the UK. It said Scotland from memory. The article also mentioned how out of date the defender is compared to modern vehicles but how suited it is for its purpose. The article just said a new engine in 2011 and a new defender in 2014.

Be happy with the engine in the defender now ! It is a far better offering than anything toyota and nissan can come up with. It may not be as fast at top end but is more suited if you use the vehicle as landrover intended ...... off road ! I have a 2008 def and drive the other 2 in offroad conditions at work every day.
I found the article a little hard to believe as the author was doing a piece on the defender after a test drive, he didn't pick up the transmission is a 6 speed not a 5 speed.
He also was a little disappointed that the vehicle he tested that when driven into the mud hole he got stuck and required winching on several occasions.
He made no reference to any other brand of vehicle attempting this terrain and having no difficulty getting through, so on conclusion I felt it was his lack of ability was the issue not the vehicle.
In all my years of bush driving, owning allsorts of 4 wheel drives if the mud is deep enough it will stop you.

The original post is talking about the current Defender model getting a new engine in 2011 - A few years before the entire vehicle is scrapped for an all new Defender.
Land Rover has tooled up to use the transit derived engine in the 2007 on Defender - they are not going to change this engine towards the end of the model run. Even Land Rover are not that crazy.
