I would never recommend using a hand throttle while driving, But its ideal for bumping up the alternator charge rate, like for winching, lighting up a crash scene, jump starting or simply recharging the battery. As it's mechanical it can't show up as an error message (cue next year's model, cute asian voice: "Yoo heff yo foot on de thottle, plees tek it off")
Wouldn't the computer start to through error messages on the Defender TD5, ....
I haven't had anything to do with TD5's, but I do understand they have a "fly by wire" accelerator.
If pushing the accelerator pedal with your foot does not give error codes then I don't see why pulling on the accelerator pedal via a hand throttle cable would give error codes!
I haven't fitted one yet, but I got a Defender V8 Choke cable. It fits on the RHS of the steering column, under the rubber bung. There's a mounting plate for it in the shroud already.
I was thinking that I'd have to route it to the fuel pump throttle (300Tdi), but now I'll have to look at the pedal idea.
If you've ever driven up a really steep and boulder strewn track, where you're bumped around in the seat, you would have noticed that your foot goes up and down on the throttle. This then makes the bumping worse and compromises the traction. A gentle and steady throttle from the cable can easily provide a steadier ascent. Plus all else that's been said about times of increased load on the charging system.

That's my hand brake release. I thought aout getting a second peddle and modding it so I could use it as a hand throttle ut couldn't be bothered.
where can you get them?
Havent seen them since Ser2A
Got one on my Series III Stage 1. It's a chunky affair and is attached to the inside of the firewall, just above the gearbox tunnel on the passenger side. It reaches through the firewall to a lever that attaches to a push-rod which pushes a lever that rotates a rod that extends to the drivers side and which has a lever attached to a cable that is attached to the accelerator cable, and...
You set the lever, push on the accelerator peddle and the engine sits at that setting
Photo attached. You can see the lever just above the gear lever.
