Great idea to poll this one. At least we have a chance of generating some statistical evidence on how these things are running - albeit a small statistical sample.

So far, with 14 Puma owners votes, it is mostly "no trouble" with a few "some trouble" and one engine replacement. I only know of two people on the forum anyway who have actually had to have the transplant.

Well - so far it is ~1/3 who have had minor/major problems and ~7% who have had an engine replaced. However the sample size (so far) is too small to draw any rigorous conclusions.

(I wonder how the numbers would compare to a poll elsewhere on the ZD30 or the toyo V8).

My 110 has now done 63500kms, the only thing that has been replaced is the notorious vac pump.

Perhaps someone here should go undercover and start a poll there...

OK - so we are up to n=28 - not too bad.

    Any more???

So far the stats are that 25% of owners have had major/minor problems
3.6% have had the engine changed.

It was mentioned that there was someone else on here who had the engine changed?

Mine had an engine replacement at 83,000kms (oil jet issue). I was lucky that the dealer was able to witness the rattle on the 3rd morning in their yard, so the engine was swapped out...otherwise, I probably wouldn’t get an opportunity for it to play up again till next winter. After I made a low power complaint with the new engine, they upgraded the engine software, and its going well now.

It’s had a lot of warranty work, like many others, and apart from being on its second engine, it’s got its 3rd clutch, 2nd front prop shaft (no sign of wear, but it lost a grease nipple), 2nd rear diff (slight whine), 3rd set swivel seals (slight leak), and plenty of smaller stuff.

That is a lot of stuff and pretty unacceptable, even though most was minor and probably not likely to fail for a long time. I am pretty fussy, and am always looking for something not right, so there may be more stuff done under warranty than other Pumas. Despite the long list of warranty work performed, it has never bailed me up, and it’s done 2 x VIC High Country trips and a Simpson, which was pretty tough on it.

I am firmly of the opinion that LR do their R&D work with Defenders after they are released on the market, and when you consider the small production runs, they probably couldn’t justify it any other way! So my goal is to get it all sorted before the warranty expires, as I want to keep it long term. It does a great job for what it was designed for, I thoroughly enjoy driving it, and I have almost run out of projects and accessories for my needs…at least for the time being.

    Regards
    Brid
