whats your diff doing or not doing.....

how ****ed are you going to be if the problem turns out to be an unbalanced tail shaft?
when it first started being a problem it was whinning like a bitch, when fixed it was only fixed for less then 72hrs before doing it on acceleration and on overdrive...and much much louder.

It was fixed again and was great for ages but has started to whine again..we have also had a persistent leak from it.

I'm not going to be ****ed if its a tailshaft I'm not the one spending all the money on it...

There is also a none quality issue with crown and pinion wheels whether they have that isolated yet or not I don't know

Sounds like the pinion seal is rooted and a lack of oil has caused a bearing to sieze, how bad is the leak?

Nab it's not that the leak is not bad enough for that the leak on my rear pinion was worse... Besides the leak came back after the whine.

Hi Dullbird - Just thought I'd wade in and let you know my Diff is getting done again next week. First time it was a whine after about 90km/h or so.
Came back after being reconditioned, and it now whines from 40km/h up. Loud enough to not be able to talk over over about 70km/h....

got a line on what the cause might be......

found out when an appy was trying to set up a diff and couldnt get a whine free diff...

the spacer block for adjusting the zero of the DTI used to measure the pinion height is now 2.1-2.2/1000ths of an inch undersize so he could never get the initial pinion height correct.

Might be an idea to get whoever the diff specialist is thats doing the diff to ensure that A) they are using the right pinion block for the relavent diff (the p38 style is different to a rover but both are listed as a rover diff pinion block) and the block is manufactured correctly.

Good luck to them DB, last week there were none avail in the country

    I just salisbury converted a 2005 110 due to screaming /pinion failed/ rear differential.

Very poor quality crownwheel and pinion hardfacing is my guess. It was howling for only a week then the pinion bearing let go and started to leak possibly due to being immersed in metal particles from the crownwheel face etc. This vehicle has done 130K and AFAIK is its first rear diff failure. Anyway, it has a REAL diff in it now so no need to worry anymore.

Maybe people should look into some Chinese diffs to replace the OEM ones, sounds like they couldn't be any worse.

With today's technology and metalurgy we can make a diff that will almost never wear out, but no one will make it because there is no profit in it.

We are doomed to have to buy conumer durable items that aren't and the durability gets poorer each generation.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
