So see this is the thing. It's everyones right to buy whatever they want. You want to drive a Ram on the school run. If you can pay for it then you're good to go. Go knock yourself out. You want to have a SUV/4x4 for Mum, Dad, and each of the kids. Again fine.
The problem is that Australias transport emissions are still growing. As emissions decline in other sectors (like electricity) it's going to be seen as a bigger target.
And so this is where the problem is. People are either "it's all bull" .. or are happy for someone else to drive something better leaving them to enjoy their Ram.
Whatever but something is going to have to change. How do we encourage people to make better choices? I see schemes like the NVES and various EV incentives as moves in the right direction. It's hard though. So many vested interests constantly trying to stay where we are.
The silly thing it's not about absolutes. We don't need to ban people in cities from buying SUV/4x4/DC's or tax the hell out of them. We just need some people to maybe say "We only need one DC in the family".
The problem is every "bad" vehicle we put on the road.. we're stuck with it for it's life so the emissions are locked in. We need to somehow get people to make better choices when they need a new car.
You ask me "Why don't I sell the defender and buy a shark?" How many times have I said "The best climate outcome is to walk, cycle or take public transport.
If you can't/won't do that then the next best is keeping the car you have. If you can't do that, then when you buy another car maybe consider an EV. "
