For under $3000 (VND50Mil) you can get an electric bike with a 285km range, 4 hour charge time (using standard 10A power socket), 100kph top speed, and costs less than $1 to fully charge.

If I lived in Vietnam I would definitely get one for the city (and a made in Vietnam Ford Ranger or Everest for the longer distance driving).

Between BYD, Geely, and SAIC you would probably be backing a long term stayer in the market and a safe bet.

So government mandates are forcing this. I can understand not wanting millions of two strokes running in crowded cities. Imagine how much better the air would be with 4stroke bikes rather than 2 strokes (given the majority of road users are on bikes).

I don’t believe 2 strokes have been banned as such, but certainly not a popular option and seem to be non-existent in the new market due to tougher global emission standards. Same in Thailand.

More likely the move to Euro 5 standards that killed the 2 strokes globally. There are only a few manufacturers still offering as new Euro 5 compliant 2 strokes.

I love 2strokes ... but I can't understand how they would meet any standards ... you are literally burning oil in them. Maybe they have somehow dry sumped them and run a standard oil filled crankcase (though I can't quite understand how).

I can understand 2 stroke dirt bikes and chainsaws ... but to use them for normal transport is an awful idea. I should look at those motorbikes as thinking about it ... couldn't you run a hub motor if its electric ... so you would remove the chains, sprockets ... a lot of the maintenance upkeep required.

Agreed. The technology needed to make a 2 stroke clean goes against the whole principle of the simplicity of the original design. Needs fuel injection, catalytic converters/particulate filters, ECU’s etc etc.

I can see the technology benefits of electric vehicles starting to make more sense for you.

Much simpler and a lot less maintenance required.

Funny thing, when I lived in Bangkok up until 1991 the 2 stroke bikes came from factory quite clean and no visible smoke. The riders however believed that smoke = power and got service mechanics to turn up the oil injection until they smoked like chimneys. I bet it still happens.

Even city driving takes a long time to go a short distance. If your driver can average 20kph they are doing well. Bikes are quicker and far more popular way for the locals to get around.

To travel say 600km by road can take up to 18-20 hours. Realistically if going by road you may cover up to 200km in a day if self-driving. Even 400km as a passenger is exhausting.

You are much better off to fly between the cities and regional towns than do a long distance road trip. Flying is cheap - most cases less than $100 and often less than $50 between the cities and regional centres.

Another interesting option they have are "sleeper buses" which are like a Greyhound coach but have pods with a bed and TV for long distance travel.....403 Forbidden
