The type of hybrid is important. Toyota is selling "mild hybrids" which just means the ancilliaries are all driven electrically.

A true hybrid should have an electric motor in the drivetrain so should have good acceleration from both motors. I think that's called a serial hybrid.

There are a lot of different types of hybrids...

I'm a fan of Robert Pepper and his work. I think by enlarge we agree and I've learnd stuff from him. So much so I fund him. I found out this morning that he has done an article on EV battery life.

I encourage anyone in here who still has an open mind about EV's to have a read. He summarises it as...

Simply put, there are reasons not to buy an EV, but battery life is no longer one of them.
He also refferences the problem around discussion of anything EV's. It's hard/impossible (certainly in this thread) to have a meaningful discussion about EV's.

I do not think EV's are the answer to all motoring needs. I do think though that people are not very pragmatic about what their acutal needs for a vehicle are as I've discussed in length. I do think that if people are open to realisticly assesing their needs that EV's can be a great option.

The problem with almost all EV related content is that it is either pushing EVs, downplaying or ignoring the disadvantages, or so anti-EV it would be comical if it wasn't both pathetic and robbing people of what might be an excellent vehicle choice. This is because the EV discussion isn't about cars, it's ideological and therefore passions run way deeper than the usual Ford vs Holden or 4-pot turbo vs V8.
As I have said over and over... it's just a car with a battery.

EDIT: I do wonder whether this current fuel "crisis" will encourage people to be more pragmatic in assesing what they actually need in a vehicle. Or at least.. do they actually need two vehicles in the family capable of a "big lap". I suspect it's going to have to get pretty bad.

Another thought.. other fuel crisis have changed the way we think about cars. We shouldn't be surprised if this causes people to shift their thinking.

Unfortunately EV's have been part of a culture war. Which is a shame because even if you don't believe in climate change - depending on your needs they can be a really good solution. And - we can only wonder how if we'd embraced EV's.. how much more fuel would be left for everyone who hadn't got there yet.

Because we delayed both fuel‑efficiency standards and large‑scale electrification, we are at least 70 million litres a month short of the clean savings that a more ambitious EV rollout would already be delivering. To fill that gap, regulators have relaxed fuel quality limits and opened the door to dirtier, higher‑sulphur petrol.
    Just a moment...

PS I was told by someone who has some knowledge of the subject that high sulphur diesel in a modern vehicle not built for it is less than ideal. Wont worry the TD5 though.

Correct, EVs are still crap compared to a proper car, almost regardless of the price of petrol. Its nothing to do with culture, it doesn't matter how often stupidity is screamed at us .... it is still stupidity.

At some point you're going to have to stop saying "I don't hate EV's".. you know that right?

But I don't hate them. I hate the type of stupidity that gets said about them. There is absolutely not doubt, they are crap compared to a proper car from a user perspective. This does not mean I hate electric cars, its a simple statement of fact. Even my parents own a crappy chinese electric throw-away. They love it. It works for them (though like everyone else they have other proper cars for when they need something decent rather than a toy car). You know .... just like you.

Are you sure you mean Toyota?

The latest Camry has a 138kW/221Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 100kW/208Nm electric motor. The electric motor does more than power the ancilliaries.

EDIT Sorry. I thought you meant that is all they sell, not that it is a new small part of their range. It seems that the mild hybrids ar limited to the Hilux. Is that right?
