In the past a lot of families owned station wagons.................which manufacturer has such a model in their line up? Not many.

Something has to fill that vacuum.

If we only paid a minimal rego cost and a distance-driven cost determined by vehicle dimensions, we could better afford to use the most appropriate tool for the job, perhaps?

And on the odd occasion,SWMBO will pick them up in the Land Cruiser......

Let people just do what they want, an EV would NEVER do the job of those vehicles.

If you have ever seen the line of country vehicles,at a private boarding school, dropping off students at the beginning of the term, either here or in Toowoomba, the line of D/C utes and Land Cruisers is amazing.
Even if you don't use the 4wd, the roads are so bad in regional victoria, either a 4wd, or a pretend jacked up hatchback trying to look like a 4wd is the only choice. The electric throw-aways and modern cars have ridiculous wheels and tires that simply are not adequate for normal use outside of a big city with perfect roads.

We have quite a few farmers at one of the martial arts clubs I help to run 20minutes outside ballarat. The parents mostly drive 4wds. the "awd" type passenger cars (eg: rav 4) type vehicles are there "cheap" road cars that aren't used for towing.... but no doubt still used for farm work when needed.

As soon as you come into town twin cab utes, sure there is plenty around, but I'd be guessing 10% of the traffic. So unless you look for them they aren't really very obvious (a bit like electric throw-aways).

An electric car to anyone like these people would be utterly useless. no ground clearance, no spare tires, no range, crappy wheels ... useless in every way for the tasks they require.

They are simply a city toy for poeple that either like toys ( I love messing around with toys), and those that are trying to prove something to there neighbours. (this is probably why I'd never own one, I couldn't give a crap what anyone else thinks of me. Certainly I could never "pretend" that I'm trying to save the planet or any such nonsense).

There is a lot in this report from the IEA.

Things I take from it are we are probably in a lot more trouble than our government is letting on. I'm unsure why but I guess we will find out soon enough.

One of the other lines was this.. EV's are a long term strategy to reduce dependence on oil - despite what is opined here.

Birol is also recommending longer-term measures such as buying more electric vehicles, as Spain attributes its lower energy prices to its shift to renewables at a time when European nations are gutting climate action policies to offset the energy crunch.
I think we are going to regret this. Lost opportunity. They might "ruin your weekend" but could have saved (or at least helped) our economy.

A mate I used to work for rang me from Perth today and we talked about stuff.

Price of fuel came up and he told me about a woman who is a friend of his family. She went to an EV dealership in Perth on Thursday....... there was a queue.

He told me how many she thought they sold on Thursday and how many on Friday. It was more than a few.

In due course the EV sales figures will come out.

Meanwhile the oz glossy bit had a review of the BYD sea lion 8 hybrid that can do 1000 k's on a full tank and charge. Reviewer gave it 4 stars and said it was way overpowered.

Meanwhile in the business section of the oz the car guy was trying to relate the unreliability of this year's hybrid F1 cars to all ex's..

Strangely I see BYD has put the prices up by 1% across the range.

The thing that most people don't understand is that the pipeline for cars is long. Very long. The car you see at the dealer was the result of ordering decisions made years ago.

If there was a run on EV's and the manufacturers thought they could sell a heap more probably the quickest turn around is six months. And even that would probably be borrowing from production slots for elsewhere.. and it's not like this isn't going to be a global thing. And then it comes down to even how much capacity they have to deliver and process the cars in Australia.

Unfortunately increasing the EV share to help with fuel security is like putting more fuel storage in. These are things that cannot be done once the crisis that everyone was wargaming is here.

There has been more in the press about how chinas pivot to renewables was in part due to fuel security. I find it's an interesting time to reflect on our governements. We are poor at making long term decisions. Fuel security is something that's easier left for the next government. Until it isn't.

Also.. if this drags on... it's really going to hurt EU manufacturers who had tried to pivot back to ICE.

Interestinly.. was in a BYD showroom last week and the guy openly said "This is so cheap because the chinese government support BYD". And that is why the europeans were so upset!

    Interesting times.

I wonder if these people understand what they are buying. If fuel prices spiral for years, it might work out for them (if they can stand the limitations of the car). I would hope most people that buy an electric throw-away already understand the limitations of owning such a vehicle (so it isn't such a problem). But buying one to "maybe" save some money on petrol for a few months sounds like a very silly idea (unless of course you have always wanted an electric throw-away and was planning on buying one either way).

Ifs always interseting how things work out. Who would have thought 3 weeks ago we would be paying this for fuel. I'm fortunate the old ****box still runs LPG (which is 78c/l still). I probably should have rushed out and filled the fuel tank of every vehicle in the yard two weeks ago when petrol was cheap. But I just can't bring myself to be so stupid. if we all do that, the obvious side effect is petrol shortages in the short term. don't panic buy !!!

Unlikely, people will still want proper cars. I imagine anyone in europe that is prepared to deal with the deficiencies of owning an electric throw-away .... well they will already have one
