Interesting photo Dave.
When I first saw the distinctive tail I thought Spangled Drongo but it does not show the red eye.
It may be a trick of the light.
Keith
none of the shots show it having a red eye if i recall corectly...

The Flamingo was in the Atacama Desert in Chile.

Can anyone tell me what type of bird this is?

Is it some kind of Honey eater? i have looked on a couple of bird websites and the closest looking bird I can find is a Yellow plumed honey eater.

This was taken just outside of Bourke

Here is another shot of it

White plumed honeyeater maybe?

We get them on the farm near Dirranbandi as well. They are pretty big, probably around 7" long.

Actually last time i was out there i found a dead one, easy to identify once it is in the hand.

This wasn't a big bird probably the same/similar size to a noisy miner.

They hung around in small groups too quite a social bird

Thats them,i was comparing it to the smaller honeyeaters we get around here, such as Lewin.Noisy miner size is about right, but with a longer tail.

We often see them around the dams having a drink.Probably the most common honeyeater in that area. They hang around with Friar birds as well.

Thanks Arthur,if we didn't have noisy miners here at home, we would have a lot more birds around, our garden is full of trees. They are actually culling them in some areas of western NSW,and the reports are many species of other birds move in replacing them very quickly.:)

Male figbird. The female is flecked and has no red around the eye,vey similar to an Oriole.

The red around the eye goes white when they are angry,we had one in a cage for 16yrs when i was a kid.Found it on the way home from school, was a little pink thing with no feathers. It used to imitate the horn of the Series 1,and the posties whistle, bloody annoying. In those days there were no permits needed for keeping native animals.

............... just can't get them super sharp as yet....

You've done pretty well considering. It must have been fairly poor light to start with. Your exif data shows ISO 1100 , 1/250 at 6.3 metres from the subject and at max zoom of 300mm on your 70-300mm and fully open at f5.6.And the flash did fire. The 70-300mm is pretty soft at the upper end as was our 80-400mm and it took a bit of conscious effort and time to train myself to 'zoom back' a tad to around 350mm for a much better result even taking into account the extra cropping needed to compensate for less zoom.

At 20' from the subject you've got pixels to burn with the D7000. I reckon zooming back to say around 250mm (375mm effective) could have given a better result but considering the high ISO / low shutter speed conditions the chances of a crystal sharp result were basically nil.

What DOF setting and SS are you using?

That pic was 1/320,F5.0,iso5000.

It was a quick pic in very low light late in the day,not much good.

Been raining and overcast for the last week,so i haven't been able to get a good pic of them.I really want a BIF of them, but that is impossible in the recent weather conditions.

Chucaro
7th February 2016, 07:55 PM
With that SS the birds should be sharper, crack the DOF to F11 and see what happens.
Reduce the ISO to about 400 if the conditions allow it. Perhaps at the ISO set up that you are using there is a bit of noise that will be make the image soft after cleaning.

Traveled to the wilds of NE NSW for the Australia day weekend and spent it along the Nymboida river. Here's a few pics taken in the Nymboida National park which was a bit tricky to find and to access but well worth the effort.
All photos taken with Nikon D7000 and Nikkor 200-500 mm zoom.

Forest Kingfisher - juvenile

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/02/328.jpg (http://s540.photobucket.com/user/DeanoH/media/Nikon%20200-500mm/DSC_4876as_800X600_zpsimgrac3c.jpg.html)

1/200 sec, f 7.1, ISO 400, 480 mm

Superb Blue Wren

1/640 sec, f 6.3, ISO 800, 500 mm

Brown Honeyeater (I think)

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/02/330.jpg (http://s540.photobucket.com/user/DeanoH/media/Nikon%20200-500mm/DSC_5044as2_800X800_zpsx90ynfew.jpg.html)

1/1000 sec, f 6.3, ISO 800, 410 mm

Silvereye

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/02/331.jpg (http://s540.photobucket.com/user/DeanoH/media/Nikon%20200-500mm/DSC_4957as_800X800_zps0vki3qjq.jpg.html)

1/30 sec, f 7.1, ISO 500, 500 mm.

Whilst this photo is nothing outstanding it is a very good example of how good the VR is on the Nikkor 200-500 zoom.

This photo was a quick 'snapshot' at full zoom on the shady side of the tree with a bright background and the subject distance about 9 metres with 1/30 second exposure and handheld . A very good result considering.

Excellent work mate, you concentrated in having a sharp eyes and bik.
I know that converting the original images to jpg and then reduce the size for the internet it is tricky and a lot of info it is lost.
If you allow me to made just an observation it will be on the first image which IMHO it is just a touch to sharp'.
I do not know which kind of PP software you have but if it will allow it I would do a selective sharpening making sure that eyes, big and claws are just a tad sharper than the body.
I love the BIF images nice action and posture on them.

Mark how do you upload to flikr? I opened your barking owl in flikr and it seems like its been subject to a fair bit of compression. As soon as I try to zoom in on the picture it pixilates quite a lot.

Do you only upload small images to flikr?

Interesting... I can put it full screen on a 27in Monitor!

At that size there is a bit of noise visible - the shot was cropped and originally shot at ISO1250..but it isn't pixelated.

File uploaded is 2048 x 2048 240dpi 2.48MB which should be tonnes for screen viewing.

Do you get the same pixelation on other shots I have up there?

White Headed Pigeon or "Baldy" as we knew them when I was a boy. We had flocks of hundreds of them come down to eat the corn left in the paddock after it was harvested. They started my interest in native pigeons which are still my favourites 'til this day.

If there is one there will be more about, watch out for Brown pigeons (Brown Cuckoo Dove) as well as they also like the tobacco bush.

today's shots

they were flighty as hell or hiding so it took a while to get anything i could use.

got a a fairly small pair of birds that i just can not get a useable pic of so far. they are about the size of a finch and are grey with white under they eye about 1/3 of the head height wide.. they look like they may be nesting about 3m up the lillipilly ...

sneaky little sods but at least i didn't nearly trod on the black snake like i did yesterday trying to get pics :p

That looks like one decent sized snake Dave!

luckily it was very well behaved!

had it been a brown there would have been hell to pay....

am pretty sure it's the second biggest red bellied black i have seen.

i sent a pic to the local snake catcher and he was here at break neck speed... even got a ticket for his trouble he tells me :p

it was a good 90mm girth and way the hell over 2 metres long.

snake catcher was here for 3+ hours looking for him using cameras under slabs and in sheds, down the old well etc etc and even went through next door as well as they have young kids.

didn't find him tho.... so we are all stepping high for a while :p

Looks like a Spangled Drongo going by the tail and red eye.

Nice Red Belly by the way, I also have an interest in snakes and reptiles and the Red Belly Black is one of my favourites. Nice and placid and very unlikely to do any harm. I sat and watched one for 10-15 minutes swimming in a large puddle one day, I suspect it was catching tadpoles (or looking for frogs). I've talked to a few Herpetologists and although they are known to eat frogs no-one has observed them eating tadpoles before. Another time we came across one, I stood there quietly observing it and it went between my boots and off into the grass after a few minutes.

I definitely don't like browns though, not at all placid and extremely dangerous.

Couldn't get a shot being so close and by the time I back up far enough - he had disappeared into the long grass and I elected not to follow.

I went to Phillip Island today to drop my son at a friends place and decided to sit on the cliffs near the Nobbies and use the gulls as practise for tracking birds in flight.

The wind blowing a gale, made hand holding the 200-500 a bit of a struggle and I got lots of tack sharp rocks with blurry birds in front of them  and one or two decent shots.

While these are not perfect, these guys were 70-80 metres away at their closest, so these are cropped pretty heavily.

I do love this lens - lots of fun when a crow decides he doesn't want a hawk visiting...

I was tidying up my photos and found these that I had forgotten about. An adult and a juvenile I saw when visiting Stanley Tasmania in 2015. I had never seen these brutes before and for once I had a camera.

I think those two parrots in the earlier pic may not be rainbows[wink11]

They are probably Musk lorikeets

The Musk lorikeets do not have the vivid band across the chest, so definitely rainbow. Jim

Surprising how much difference there is in the colour, has that pic had any PP?

Bytemrk
10th March 2017, 08:12 PM
I thought the same thing when I looked at them together. I shoot everything in raw, so there is always a certain amount of black/white shadow/highlight adjustment, but no other colour manipulation.

Colours looks pretty close to what I saw - but it was shot at dusk in fading light, so that may account for some of it.

Just different variations from different parts of the country I think. May also be different genders or ages.

What lense did you use for the first shot Mark? The detail is nice on the feathers but then the feet are a little blurry. The second shot makes the bird look huge due to the size of the foliage.

Very dark on back for a Kestrel, but it maybe just the light making it appear dark.
If it was around 300mm long, definitely a kestrel.
If around 450 to 500mm long, could be a brown falcon.

More likely a Kestrel, particularly as it ha no 'socks' on the top of its legs

Thanks Paul ... it was about 300mm or so I thought he was a bit small for a brown falcon, but wasn't sure.

Here's some sort of (German) duck on a floating island of debris with two young just broken out of the eggs. I didn't realise the eggs & young were there until I viewed the 'graph on the big screen. There's also a couple of fish there to sustain mother duck while she does her thing.

Not a real clear shot by the standards here - only shot with a Canon SX 60HS - but IMHO, an interesting shot none the less.
