Thought that maybe we can start posting pics in a Bird thread, similar to Close Encounters and other dedicated threads.
So, here are some of my lame shots, zoom isnt the best in poor light and I hate bumping up ISA over 400... but ill post to start anyway ;)
What I need is a 300mm with a f2.8 (for less than $500 :p :p)

Bird shots can be very hard to take. Mate of mine take some great shots. That's pretty much all he shoots.
Here's a couple of mine.
Osprey taken flying over Narrabeen Lagoon. Spent way too long standing on a sand bank in the freezing cold while he was building his nest.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/06/1782.jpg
Took awhile to figure out how to shoot these critters. They take off when the pre-flash goes off just before the main flash. End result is a blur of wings and two legs disappearing out the top of the shot. Trick is to use manual flash rather than TTL and lay in wait until they get used to you.

Fantastic photos David, puts my efforts to shame. I would be very happy with those shots.
Yes I agree its not easy, I have HEAPS here in frame but all are 'soft' as my lens cant cope with poor light and movement :(
Very frustrating, but a challenge :D

Not sure if these are back or not. They lived on top of a tree right next to the Narabeen Lagoon. Poor things would have the eggs only to have the nest blown away in a storm. Same thing happened a few years running. Not sure if they are back this year. Took this one in July so it should be osprey season soon.

Yeah I agree, certainly waiting for the bird to fly 'naturally' in hunt for grub rather than a bird perched on a fence (not that these are bad, as you get detail).
I discovered that maybe my soft shots were completely my fault... my lens does go 'soft' at 300mm and open wide (f5.6), so need to remain at around 200mm at f7ish for sharpest results. Of course, 200mm limits my ability to get in close :(
I suppose ill just have to save up the $6000 required for a good lens, AS IF!

That was taken before I had the SB800's but even so I would have needed a Better Beamer or similar.
Brahminy Kites are very common up here, I see at least one or two every day either driving to or from work. Osprey's and Sea Eagles are also common, but I usually don't have the camera handy.

Right, had another crack at the zoom lens today and I think im starting to get it! So cloudy-ish day, cranked the ISO to Auto from 100-1600, set Manual mode so that its fixed at about 500ss and f7... therefore ISO fluctuates depending on light conditions.
I prefer this set up as I know both SS and Fstop wont change so I have full control.
Here are 3 shots, never mind the subject (boring), but more on capturing the moment which is what im after. Two are panning shots (getting used to these) and one stationary.
Lens, being what it is, gives a grainy look at full ISO1600, but better zoom lens in future will help the situation (now to find more funds )
Thoughts?

The blue-faced honeyeater it is very nice bird and change the colors of it face as he grows up.
The first stage as chick is a gold-faced, then green as a juvenille and finally blue as an adult.
There are plenty of chicks and juvenilles in the are and many of them come to feed in our native garden.
Here are two examples, one of a chick and the oher of a juvenile.

The Australian Magpie is very well exposed and with good details.
Try to get a good head turn soo it is a good eye contact.
Also when you shoot birds remember to try to compose the image so the eye of the bird have the "spark"of light in it so it is not a black empty hole.

Thanks. First time shooting like this. I was shown that a smallish LED torch held against the foot of the lens is good for illumination and AF. Main light was SB-800 with better beamer. Taken with 80-400 @ 400mm with a bit of a crop in photoshop.
I'm thinking I might make a small bracket up to hold the torch. Maybe simple as a couple of rubber bands.

To have a sharp image with a 300mm lens the ideal distance is 10 meters, 50 meters is out of range for a 600 mm lens if a excellent image is what the photographer like to have.
600mm = $ 11000 :(

Thanks Carlos, regarding the 300mm I am prepared to test it and do a report if you send it here for 6 or 8 weeks :D
For this shot I need 800mm or more so the 200-400 plus a X2 converter will be the cheaper option.
The 500 f/4 with a 1.7 converter would be ideal and not to heavy.

It is harder to get feather detail in the red of the male Kingy, wheras the green of the female is easier. Is there a reason for this or is my monitor a bit so so ?

I found that the reds are hard as well, they can easily bleed out if saturated too much!
dmdigital
27th July 2010, 04:00 PM
There are fewer red and blue photosites on a Bayer pattern filter over the camera's sensor than there are green sites. That's part of the explanation. Another part of the equation is the whitebalance temperature.
Cap
27th July 2010, 04:57 PM
I also noticed that using Adobe RGB doesnt saturate the reds as much as sRGB colour gamut. I also have all other in camera options off, for example I dont have the saturation level set to vivid.
dmdigital
27th July 2010, 05:49 PM
That's because Adobe RGB is better suited to print than screen as it is a much larger colour gamut than sRGB.

Nice shot; I had to give up trying with the D200. I just couldn't make it do what I wanted. The D700 is great - except for its weight. By the time you put a good lens on it you are carrying 2 - 3 Kg (4 - 6lb in English). No wonder I have a sore neck!

...feeders work so well! This one (and many others) were taken today after my dog found it injured in my back yard. It was very timid, it allowed me to pick it up and walked on my hands arms like a pet! At any rate, I thought the little guy was calm so I took advantage of it and grabbed some 'controlled' photos. Now I see why the pros can get these kind of shots, and I was only mucking around - as in didnt want to stress it unecessarily so I didnt set up the background, just perched on a branch.
Must say the 28-80mm kit lens still does a great job even tho its been bashed around somewhat.
Notice sun reflection but also flash reflection as I used flash fill to bring out the micro details.

Nice lorrie Locorr.
Try to use the old 70-300 at not more than 270mm and with an aperture of about f/6 and the image will be sharper.
The lens performs reasonable well @ 200mm f/7

Thanks. I picked up a Nikon F55 plus 28-80 + 70-300 and 1 filter plus a ProAm bag for $60 at a garage sale. Shoe string budget here.
The F55 seems to function alright. It even came with an unused roll of film.
Might run it through just for the hell of it.

I paid a visit to the Bundaberg Botanic gardens to see if there were any new birds near the lake.
Oh well, there are 1000 plus Cattle Egrets nesting on the trees!! I guess that 50 or more nest per tree and in some cases more.
It is difficult to get a clear shot and the angle for the 300 mm lens is a bit high but I give it a go.
450mm + will be ideal lens.

The first pic would of also been good if there wasn't so much noise in it. perhaps try putting it through a software such as noise ninja might clear it up a bit I haven't used it myself but apparently a reasonable program.

At a guess Derek has possibly retouched the photo by boosting colours a bit but also derek is using much much more expensive lenses than dave.
Derek will also likely be using the camera in manual mode or Aperture priority but choosing his speeds and ISO's better, where at a guess dave could possibly be using Aperture priority or Speed priority and at times not watching the speed on the camera..
There is a function in the Nikon camera to boost colours by putting the setting to "Vivid" or "vivid+" and it does work in some scenes as I use it but you have to be careful as it can also over expose a shot easily too

that lot of pics were shot with the iso too high. and the camera is set on vivid +1 most of the time
was playing with settings the night before, setting up the custom profiles and didnt reset the camera the next morning in my rush to get the shots.
plus some are done at a long distance with big zoom and no tripod so i cant have the exposure set to long as it will be too blurred.

90% of the time I take my avian shot in manual mode using aperture priority to blur the BG.
The ideal is not to take shot under SS1/250 uisng a VR lens to obtain a sharp image.
My camera is set in Vivid and I tone it down during PP.
IMO the Wren posted by Derek is a bit over saturated in the blues and the original a bit pale. The blue tones are some were in between the 2 shots.
There is no need for a top of the range lens if the conditions are there.
The following image was taken with the D300s and the 70-300VR lens.
Manual esposure @ SS1/200, aperture F/5.6, ISO 400 focal @ 300mm
http://www.plottier.net/albums/userpics/10002/_AAP4718.jpg
The D200 is not at its best over 400ISO, however if the conditions are good to have a good esposure @ high speed it is possible to have a sharp image @ ISO 800 using a cheap lens like the 70-240 Nikkor.
Nikon D200, Nikkor 70-240mm
Program aperure priority @ F/8, SS 1/1000, ISO 800, focal @ 240mm

High ISO in those images creates that washed out look... also if you have a 'cheap' UV Lens cover that will also wash out colours.
As stated, keep the ISO below 400 if possible and also dont do large crops. Bird photography IMO is one of the hardest skills to grasp, and usually requires expensive equipment to retain super shart images (like the one on my wish list 300mm f2.8 = $6000.00)
But keep taking the shots, practice pratice and more practice :)
Chucaro
7th May 2011, 05:06 PM
can you please explain ?
Basically with a SS under 1/250 it is very hard to have a steady hand to have a sharp details on avian photography.
One of the old rules was to have a speed related to the focal lens used, ej if the focal lens is @ 300mm the ideal speed will be SS1/300, at 250mm SS 1/250 and so on.
In avian photography your set your focus on the eye of the bird and the aim is to have a sharp eye (and good contact) and a sharp bill. For this reason the head turn in the pose of the bird is what makes a good image.
Cap
8th May 2011, 03:04 PM
... so attain a speed equal or higher than focal length, you have to shoot wide open.. and DOF becomes small.. so focusing on eyes ensure that sharpness is at least on the eyes. If you dont have sharp focused eyes then the image is wasted ragarless of how sharp other parts of the bird is.
PS: Hope im not coming across as telling you to suck eggs, but ill cover the bases.

akovach, the exposure and composition in your second shot is perfect.
What you have to aim is to try to have the "spark of light" on the eye so it is not all black which gives the impression of an empty socket.
Using the on-camera flash will help to get this effect.

Yes, you are correct, that was the idea when we designed the garden and now early in the morning some days we have to close the windows to be able to have a phone conversation!! The melody of all the native birds is very loud but beautiful.
The Butcherbird that Inc posted is one of my favs

I have been chasing a couple of Wrens that have decided to relocate them selves in the Perth metro area. Why, I don't know as it is not their habitat. May be they have bee some how been blown off course. May-be they like the park across the road. Unfortunately they are too flighty at the moment to photograph.

As soon as they start the nest it will be easy to predict their flight. Have a look if there are male and females.

Good shots of a Saffron Finch Sicalis flavola pelzelni
They are in an aviary I guess because they are not an Australian native.
They are for the Amazon in Brasil and Peru.

No they are wild. Shots were at a coffee plantation in Hawaii. Not surprised to hear they are an introduced species to the islands.

Very good exposure control on the shot of a The Australian Magpie Cracticus tibicen
The details on the blacks are very good without over exposure on the whites.
Nice and sharp head with good pose.
