Can't you plant another?

And then wait 20yrs.....

Those love birds would be aviary escapees that sadly probably won't last long in the wild.

Those love birds would be aviary escapees that sadly probably won't last long in the wild.

they have been around for a few weeks now.

my wife often hears them around the place but they can be hard to spot.

hopefully they will keep on keeping on...

i will plant a couple of honey gem grevilleas to replace the silky oak, they grow much quicker...

Some great photos here.
I only use the point and shoot now. My Pentax SLR with Tele lense is up in the attic somewhere. Dont even know if one can get slide film any more.
Anyway we provide a home for geriatric feathered friends.
Some have feathers and cant fly others have hardly any feathers at all.

Only iPhone quality as usual from me but in the daylight this time so better than usual. Went to the Territory Wildlife Park in Berry Springs on Monday - and I highly recommend a visit if you're up in Darwin.

Anyway, the 'Flight Deck' was a great experience and they had on show all of the best local birds strutting their stuff and flying around - very good presentation and well trained birds. The best was the Jabiru - a marvellous creature.

First time using that 200- 500 both of those shots were shot through wire (obviously) the tawny has been cropped but that is it pretty happy with the feather detail that came out on birds

The heron was cropped with a slight vignette put on but again thats it.

I dont think you can blow the links up i sent to well to see the detail but the original is very detailed and sharp [emoji4]

Here's our Bush turkey raking up the leaves in the back yard, beautiful bird black as spades with a brilliant yellow giblet,
There are 8 other turkeys interested in his company. Looks like it maybe a great spring.

Photo was taken about a metre away from him, he just carries on about his business. Cheers.

Caught this fella in the core yard at the Luolo Mine in Mali near the Senegal border yesterday. If I was in PNG I'd say it's some sort of Bird of Paradise. Only had the RX100-III with me so it's a pretty brutal crop. 70mm just doesn't cut it for bird shots :)

I leave mine hosted on my own site.... but I doubt that makes much difference....

I export out of Lightroom with a long edge of 2048 72 dpi and standard screen sharpening which seems to do the job for me.

Dave, I reckon more than half the enjoyment is finding them and taking the shots..... I had an unfair advantage with the two above ... they were captive. Getting wild birds to sit where you want them is a totally different game [wink11]

Had quite a few of those when we were kids.
They all have amazing different personalities.

But they need a lot of care or get very messy, particularly if they are stressed out,and not doing well.

Many of the parents were electrocuted on power lines.

some great pics there. takes a lot of patience, but that is very good for the soul. kookaburras are a fantastic bird to have in our country. are you guys shooting with VR lenses or older stuff? I use a Nikon 500 F4P MF and it is still as good as the day it was made. I have heard a lot of stories of modern VR stuff failing as those tiny motors are susceptible to rough travel and bumps in the night, etc and cost a lot to replace.

Looks like fun Grounded.... a little far away for me unfortunately.

In regards to VR - most of what I shoot is with VR enabled lenses - that said if I am shooting on a tripod I turn VR off anyway. I'm shooting with a D500 and a D750, but for the last couple of months have hardly got out due to the joy of moving house!....Hopefully that will change soon. :)

While I have read similar stories about VR being fragile - I've never experienced it and it's quite astounding how much VR can help with some of the long lenses.

I've got a Nikon 200-500 5.6E and the VR is that good I can get sharp shots hand holding as slow at 1/60 @ 500mm !

Cannon gear for us.

Cannon call it IS,for image stabilisation.

We use it most of the time,it has different settings on different lenses, with the ability to turn it off.

We use Cannon EF tele lenses, with 1.4X extender at times.

Unfortunately our 5D mark3 has been for a swim,(don't ask [bigsad])we are waiting for the insurance to sort out what they are doing.

SWMBO then wants to get the model up[bighmmm]

Using an old 6D we have and the sons 7D mark 2,which i don't mind, seems pretty good, but not full frame.

This Tawny Frogmouth was sitting on an old goat cage we have. I've never seen one out of tree shelter before. We are getting showers through so I'm hoping it's just having a dry out!

Not too flash a photo (pardon the pun) but i am utterly amazed how much detail you can pull out of the shadows from this D7500. I am really glad i went the extra mile and got the 20mp D7500 instead of the 24mp D7200. the modifications nikon had made to the sony based sensor really make a difference.

i couldn't see this bird sitting on the branch till i was chasing a much smaller honey eater and happened upon this one sitting in the shadows looking at me and hit the flash and the shutter on the way through.

Superb Bee Eater

tried to capture the colours, beautiful bird that is nesting in the front yard next door.

they burrow into the sand dune about a metre

mother, father and a juvenile in attendance with both the adults taking turns to go into the burrow.

could watch them all day.

they fly around catching bugs and land back on the power lines into the house.

had major trouble getting anything approaching a decent shot as they are so shiny.

Another crapy iphone pic sorry but at Mums place my visit isn't complete without the resident Whip Bird coming out for a play in the bird bath. As my caravan is in the front yard this week he's been very shy - have heard him tooling around in the bush opposite where he lives but no visit until tonight. Little bugger is very shy so even standing up in the lounge to take a pic usually scares him off, but I got a pic - as bad as it is you can tell what bird it is. 👍

Anyway, I'm happy now he's come for a tub.

We use the East African bird app.Dont have any books to compare.

But yes,we have noticed this in Aus,using the Aus bird app(Morcombe),and also the bird books. In fact there are some birds missing on the app, such as Buff breasted rail, and Gang Gang cockatoo. They are in the books,Pizzy, etc.I have emailed them but heard nothing.

Hello again.

That’s also my experience with some bird and wildlife apps - the odd missing species or variant which can be a bit disappointing. To be sure, some of the free apps are ‘lite’ versions of a more comprehensive guide for which a payment is required. But even the latter can miss the odd critter or contain a narrow range of a given one. One example is an app that I bought covering animals of Southern Africa that is meant to be extra good. By and large it is but when I was in Etosha NP recently I tried to look up the details on the Tsessebe. Not to be found - only by happening to know that they are sometimes called a Topi further north was it finally found, but with no mention of the more common name across most of Southern Africa. The one I have doesn’t have particularly good distribution maps which is another shortcoming.

My more serious grouch about a lot of bird apps is that they still require you to have a bit of prior knowledge about what you are looking for. The better field guides typically have a key or set of silhouettes somewhere near the covers that give the general size and shape to help narrow down the search. Given that the birds are often a bit far away or move quickly makes it hard (for me anyway) to get a good look at them while fumbling through an index of common names - especially when you are trying to work out what that common name is by looking up the book.

The wildlife apps are less of a problem because most folks have reasonable idea of what they are looking at or get a better look because they are either big or slow.

Cheers,

Neil

Don.

Too dark i recon, the young ones are golden, they blacken with age.
The fluffed up feathers in the centre of its chest is probably a full crop, looks like its recently had a good feed.

We had one as a pet when i was a kid,she had leather jessies, attached to a 6ft dog chain, attached to a heavy wire,so the chain ran along the wire.
She used to return a thrown cricket ball, and always would be at the end of the line in the afternoon, waiting for us to come home from school.

A bit hard to be certain with low res shot but I'd put my money on Common Bronzewing. They're found all over Australia and colouring varies greatly with the males having a 'tan' spot on their head. Their most striking feature is bright nearly metallic colouring of the wing feathers though at times it can be quite indistinct. It may be a breeding plumage thing. They can also 'fluff themselves up' when roosting which makes them seem a lot plumper but is probably more to do with retaining body warmth.
Here's a couple having a feed on our deck.

Dull brown with long tail, whereas the Bronzwing has colourful wings and white on its head. Also shorter tail, and a more stocky bird,as in Deanoh's pic.

Yep, you beat me to it Paul, SWMBO just pointed out that the tail was too long for a Bronzewing though I'm not familiar with the Brown pidgeon. My books tell me it's a rainforest fringe dwelling bird.

It took me a while to identify it as I hadn't seen/noticed one previously. It's an Australian Pipit. Turns out they're common as muck and found all over the place. This one was at Cape Keraudren WA.

Got any more shots of it?

Maybe a Rufous throated Honeyeater.

Very difficult to ID them at times, there are so many honeyeaters that look similar.

Sometimes another pic from a different angle and in different light helps.

No other photo's, this was a one off 'snapshot'. Not bad considering.

I reckon you're on the money even though it was ignoring the trees nectar and gnawing on a bug. I considered and discarded the Rufous Throated Honeyeater because of the lack of rufous throat and face colouring but looking at images on Google Images these attributes can be absent, thanks for the ID :)

You had more success than I did.

4th August 2020, 03:30 PM
Yes, they're certainly busy little beggars :) and it was only with perseverance that we got a decent shot at all. What was interesting was that there were so many of them. At first I thought there was only a couple darting around in a dry river bed but as I started to 'stalk' them looking for a good shot there was actually a dozen or more, their camouflage is very effective and it's their movement that gives them away.

So the Crimson Rosellas have now moved into their house. [thumbsupbig]

Mum spends most of the time inside while hubby roosts in a tree about 10' away.

I can look inside the box through a lid on the top but will let nature talk its course for a while.

However, these little suckers have decided to swarm nearby - they do not like mower noise.

165421

I lived in my house for 20 years and like clockwork the bees swarm around my house on the first day of the October long weekend. When I first moved in they hung around for a week moving in an out of the wall space and dying en mass in my bathroom. Now they only blitz me for one day. They do not build a hive in the house but an expert said that most likely they have in the past and can still smell the old hive so come for a visit each time they emerge from their winter slumber.

They have never swarmed like they have above and where they are there is no where to build a hive - other than calling a bee person to take them away any suggestions on encouraging them the move on. They seem happy to stay where they are for the moment.

They do not like the mower - but what about putting the garden sprinkler on them on fine spray - not the hose as I know what will happen - me getting stung.

Water won't help , they will huddle together to protect the queen. They will stay as long as it take the worker bees to find a suitable home. Most bee keepers will be happy to come and collect them.

End of September, early October every year, the Bush Turkeys arrive in our garden and trash the place[bigsad].[bigsad]

I can’t believe how much traffic sense they have, more than some people.
I suppose the smart ones survive, then breed,so on it goes, although apparently only 1% survive to become adults.

About an hour after I put up my post - literally in just 10 secs there was a huge buzz and they were gone - I dont know where they went but the move was almost instantaneous.

I was then able to finish mowing my lawn.

We have had a Major Mitchell Cockatoo hanging out with the Galahs and eating grass seeds across the road from my house the last few weeks in suburban Sydney. My daughter reported it to me and I thought it may have been a Galah Sulfur Crested cross (I've seen these before) but once a saw it I recognised it. It is a long way out of it's range so it may be an escapee. I'll try and get some photos using the camera instead of the phone this week.

I put a little house for my local Rosellas to stop them chewing on the wood under my eaves - didn't work but they like the house. Not sure if they are actually nesting in the box but they visit it a lot and go inside.

Garry

Its been raining for a week and I have not seen the Rosellas so I decided to risk having a look in the box.

165897

Nut sure if it is one or two chicks but by the size obviously hatched a while ago. I wonder if the eggs that are visible are left over from the original laying or are a subsequent laying. With all the rain I have not seen the parents where I was seeing them all the time before, so I hope they have not abandoned the nest and the chicks.

Even though the nest box is made of marine ply and painted with linseed oil on the outside I need to look at water proofing - the access hatch is in the top so maybe sealing just the top will work. Definitely do not want to use paint.

We're moving house to just 200 metres up the road, downsizing to a 'house block', and it's amazing the difference in the bird life between the two properties. The King Parrots have got it all worked out though, they know when they're onto a good thing and actually follow us, but birds we've never seen before are common 'up here'. Currawongs, Wattle Birds and these little New Holland Honeyeaters for a start. I'm going to miss the Butcher Birds though, we've had a family living 'down the back' for the last 40 years or so and they're really part of the family.

So checking the nest box I find I have got three chicks and a couple of dead eggs.

166044

166045

Last week I woke up to all the birds in the neighbour hood squawking and carrying on - the reason was the Currawongs were arriving en mass from the ranges to look for new born chicks to eat - they do this every year and the other birds know what the Currawongs are likely to be up too - hence all the commotion.

My neighbour has Wattle Birds nesting in his shrubs and the Currawongs were in there trying to steal the chicks so the neighbour starting shooting the Currawongs with his shanghai with quite a few hits saving a few Wattle Bird chicks- dont kill the Currawongs but them being an intelligent bird they soon learn to stay clear after they have been hit with some shot.

I have been watching if the Currawongs have made any move against my chicks but they stay silent unless you open the box and the box is probably too deep for the Currawongs to get at the chicks.

Not really a bird pic, but, sort of.With our youngest granddaughter,Lettie.

This Maggie,as its called, the dog found on the ground, under a tree, at the local park. There was a nest way up in the tree.We put it back in the tree, but half an hour later it was on the ground again, just a ball of fluff, couldnt even stand up properly. So we took it home and rang a couple of carers, they couldnt take it as they were too busy.

So my son and his partner fed it that night with a mixture they made up,found out what to do on a Magpie site on google, used a heat lamp with an electronic controller to keep it warm overnight.Next day it didn't look good. I told them to force feed it, which is what they did, as we had done to young birds when we were kids.
By lunch time that day, it had chirped up and was calling for food, and has continued to get stronger and grow.It is now the boss at their place, and has just started to get interested in insects, worms, etc.
They live on 2 acres in a rural area hopefully it will eventually look after itself.

The son has them at his place as well, about the same age.
The nest is a long way up,in the fork of a tree, similar to your pic, least 20 to 25M.

Every year there are three chicks, one gets thrown out of the nest, when very young, and two survive.
We thought this year,as it has been quite wet,and there would be quite a lot of food for them all, the three would survive, but not so.

Kookaburras do the same at our place, one or sometimes two of the young are thrown out the nest when very young.[bigsad]

Looking good.
We have a resident family of magpies who control the front yard and nest there.
Been hearing a whip bird in the trees at the rear, but they are hard to see because of their camouflage.
It's interesting to watch our dog sit in the backyard and swivel his head listening to the birds. Often we can't hear anything because their calls are outside a human's hearing range, but he can obviously hear sounds we can't.
We currently have eight young chickens but I don't have a good pic. Trying to figure out how many are roosters. Might be chicken dinner for Christmas.
Main interest here is watching the bee scouts trying to decide if the hive should nest under our eave, despite our discouragement. A local bee keeper is advising us.
I'm also surprised we haven't been visited by any more pythons, as reports say they are about.
Wildlife affairs are interesting.

Whipbirds have returned here as well, although the noisey miners try their best to chase them away.
A few years ago there were young ones,i honestly dont know how they survive, just a ball of down that lives on the ground.

Currawongs appeared here as well a few months ago, never seen them before, in the 20 yrs we have been here.
Hopefully they eat some of the Noisey Miner chicks.

The Miners are out of control, they try their best chase any other bird away, and sometimes into our windows, which usually kills them instantly.
I have seen groups of up to around 15 in family groups, feeding five chicks in one nest.

The Indian Miners are in plague proportions here and are a declared pest so you can humanly kill them - my neighbour has a trap to catch them and can catch 30 at a go - he uses the exhaust from his diesel Troopie to kill them but he reckons it takes a lot longer than exhaust gas from a petrol engine - so much for the believe that pollutants from diesels are worse than petrols.

He also catches the neighbours cats that might venture onto his property and then takes them to the pound where the owners have to pay big $$$ to get them back. He is quite open about it and mail drops his intentions before hand so the neighbours know - it is amazing how this mail drop action alone reduces the number of cats wandering around and taking down local birds.

Petrols produce more carbon monoxide which in confined spaces ties up the Haemoglobin and prevents it from carrying oxygen causing asphyxiation. Diesels produce more soot which causes cancer. Carbon monoxide is diluted in the atmosphere and is oxidised to CO2 with no problems, soot continues to cause problems. The birds are called an Indian Myna.

We have many birds here too. The kookaburras are nesting in a termite nest high up in the neighbour's turpentine tree. There is much discussion amoungst the young ones as to territory. The black faced cuckoo shrikes have three chicks also high up. I can see them clearly with field glasses but would need about a 500mm lens to get a picture I think. Noisy miners and Bloody indian mynahs are also nesting as are satin bower birds, eastern whip birds and peewees. It's a busy time.

Brings back fond memories,we had quite a few of them when we were kids,I remember feeding them with a babies bottle. We also had baby insect eating bats at times, but they often didn’t survive. Some did and ended up on a diet of home bred meal worms and other insects. If they didn’t fatten up during summer, they would die during winter. They just won’t eat when it’s cold,go into a sort of hibernation phase.

We also had all sorts of other animals and birds over the years, the one that sticks in my memory the most was a young female Wedgy that arrived one day, named Nick.

She was the household pet for over 20 yrs.She was fitted with jessies we used to call them, leather leg straps, attatched to a 2,5 M dog chain, that went to a wire line.
The dog chain ran along the wire line.
We used to throw a cricket ball for her and she would bring it back.

When we brought friends home from school, they were amazed, playing with such a tame eagle. The bats and other animals amazed them and their parents as well.

We had an Antechinus for a while once, the most aggressive animal I have ever seen.It was tiny, about 4 inches long, yet it would attack and eat a 12 inch stick insect.

Good memories there.
Our two girls are orphans.
The mother of Sesame became trapped in a Cocos palm and died and her baby was rescued. The other one, named Sunflower, was found by an Energex crew hanging alone on a power line, with no sign of the mother. The crew called the bat rescue people. The names were chosen by their sponsors, not us, BTW.
They are now growing rapidly on a special milk formula and will be returned to the wild in February, once they can fly.
They are intelligent and their eyesight, hearing and smelling senses are far superior to humans.
Contrary to popular belief they are fastidiously clean and spend much of their time grooming themselves.
They also really like being scratched behind the ears.
[emoji41]
Ses can use her thumb to hold her bottle, which is clever.

They can go downhill quick if they are weak when they come in,and they often dont clean themselves. We used to bath them to keep them clean, dry them off, and I think from memory add glucose to the milk mix, which got them going.
Very rare did we lose a Fruit bat, and we had quite a few, over the years, most had parents electrocuted on power lines.

This will be the last frogmouth photos for this year as I think they flew away a day or two ago. The photo was taken about four or five days ago.

I must confess that I didn't take this shot, but I was there when a friend of a friend took it. It is a good illustration of the fact that you need to be in the right spot at the right time. I have rarely seen them with their eyes open, but he caught the parent and the two chicks all with their eyes open.

I am surprised there are new eggs as I thought Roselllas continued to look after their young for a couple of months after they had fledged. Irrespective I hope these eggs also lead to 2 or 3 new chicks.

Oh for some reason Mum has completely lost all of her tail feathers but she can still fly OK.

Just to follow up on my contribution to this thread and my Crimson Rosellas. By the end of November the three chicks had flown the coup. They are looked after by Dad who feeds them and shows them how to find food, though they normally end up at my neighbours place who feeds them. Mum is back in the nest.

Here is Dad at my feed lot showing one of the chicks how to get free seed. Dad is on the seed and the chick is the green one. The other two chicks are in the tree nearby.
167821

Mum had laid new eggs and on 23 Dec this little fellow had arrived
167822

When I got back from Christmas on 29 Dec I had 3 - two large and one very small (bottom left) - the small one died a day or two later
167823

On 12 Jan the two remaining ones were going well
167824

Four days later on 16 Jan one is dead and the other missing - something is up. Mum and Dad are still in the tree but nothing happening.

Today I went to start cleaning out the nest and this greeted me
167825

The culprit - I dont think he deliberately killed the chicks but sat on them as the chick I found was flattened - and I later found the other missing chick buried in the sawdust.

Possum was not happy to see me and even more unhappy when I shoved the hose up his arse and he made a swan dive from the nest 15' to the ground with no effort at all. (why does AULRO turn pics on their side[bawl])
167828

I positioned the box just on 1m down from the eves and it is 4m above ground. All I can think is that the possum drops from the roof onto the box and then does a dive from the box to the ground - not sure how else he can manage it - and given where it is how did he even find it?

This little fellow has been giving me grief for the past few weeks - my garage is relatively open and he has been camping inside my roller doors - not even the doors going up and down with him inside seems to worry him. Anyway got him out of the garage so I guess that is why he has gone looking for somewhere else.

My neighbour thinks I should build his own little box somewhere, and he is probably right, but I dont want to admit defeat and let on that a nasty big arse possum beat me.

I now need to think about where to move the nesting box so a possum cannot get at it.

Garry

Hmm,had the same problem here with possums.Brush tailed possums can be kept out.

I cant find the article just now, but I read that a round hole of 65mm in the box is what you need.
A possum will squeeze through anything that its head can fit through. That is the determining part of the body.

A couple of my boxes had 65mm holes, the possums then decided to chew the wood around the hole so they could get in.I ended using sheet metal around the hole to keep them out.
Pale headed rosellas bread in both boxes.

There are also ring tailed possums around here but they didnt get in the boxes.

Thanks Paul - I am just curious how he managed to find the box in the first place as you can see stuck on the side of the house and how he got to it and then manages to leave. He cannot climb the side of the house - so must have taken a leap of faith and dropped down from the roof. Likeswise a 4m drop to ground is pretty adventurous even for a possum but when he did it for me he was pretty ****ed off and did not like the hose on full blast.

Cheers
