Bit more done this week.
The bumper has to go on first, then the valance panel, then the radiator support panel.
Next job is finish off and bolt up the mudguards.
The boosters for the 6x6 camper arrived so I guess I better get on to that job too.
So much to do, so little time.
Keith
Never enough time when you are retired , especially when you have a couple of daughters & son inlaws always wanting something done at there place . Glad i didn't have 6 kids:angel: would never work on the cars

Picked up the parts today . & called into John Bradshaw . He will tell you about all the parts when he sees you. I have to go back up as there was twice as many parts as he origionly showed me so a ute & box trailer wasn't enough room , at least a nother ute load to pick up :D

Have a very similar singer here to the one photographed, the Minister for War and Finance tuned it up too (timing was way out at first) .

Can I send you photos of anything at all to show you how its set up?

On the Royal, this is one of the best resto threads Ive seen for ages, well done and great work.. as said it would be magnificent to see it in MELROSE.. or in fact anywhere!

Keith, if you read the caption on the photo, it says it was an ex serviceman display, so that may explain why someone in the forces was given the honour of driving HRH.

Hi Keith

Paul Freestone owns Freestone Transport in Melbourne

He bought the car at Government Auction about 7 years ago for about $ 25,000

When he bought it he cut the back off and put a hoop set and canvas from standard series 1 on it so he could drive it at the beach house.

That's as much as I can tell you because I no longer work for him.

He did show me some photo's of it.

Hi Keith,

I have spoken to the ex-Australian Protective Service officer who used to drive the two later Series Land Rovers and the Daimler (just to keep them running) that were stationed in Sydney at the Commonwealth Vehicle Pool. He is trying to find some of the retired Commonwealth drivers who may have other photos. Not sure yet if only Army drivers drove in the first Royal Tour but certainly in later Tours there were also what would be now called "close protection" officers from the Commonwealth Police and some from the Commonwealth Investigation Service involved in the immediate vicinity (to look out for troublemakers such as those who write letters to the Queen and Governor-General about real or imagined grievances and mentally disturbed persons who considered they were of Royal descent) and they were all competent to drive the various vehicles if necessary.

When he finds out more I will add to this great thread.

Yes I know it was very disappointing to see a car of that vintage in mint condition having that done to it.

What he did tell me about the car is that it only had 8000 k's or miles on the clock and it was serviced every 3 months by the government mechanics.

If you want any more information about it you should give them a call I am sure he will send you some pictures and a story about the vehicle if you ask.

All the wiring is pretty much done, I just have to work out what to do with the rear indicators and number plate. They did not have a number plate so I am thinking towards a removable light board such as found on boat trailers.

Keith

That shot shows one of a select few drivers who were selected from various RAASC units (predominantly the RAASC school) and especially trained to form the Royal Visit Car Company for the 1954 visit.

Whilst studying various photographs of the use of the Company vehicles, you may note two different uniforms worn on separate occasions and this was dictated by the formality of the event. (either dress "blues" or standard Khaki drill.)

This Company not only operated the LandRovers that this forum is interested in but also a fleet of cars (Daimlers/Humber Super Snipes), as well as trucks used for the transport of luggage; which if you imagine the scale of the events held across the country, plus the staff involved and also the variety of different types of functions the Royal Party attended, you will visualise as being slightly more than the normal suitcase per person!
One or two original members of this elite Company still survive today and are members of the Army Transport Association.
I have taken the liberty of contacting one of the original drivers involved and he is only too happy to answer any questions you may have on the subject should you contact him. Just remember that he is an even older phart than either you or I, so make allowances and you should get the info you require. (See PM re contact details)

For further info see; Neville Lindsay's book "Equal to the Task" where a short description of the Unit is given on page 106. (About halfway down the paragraph)
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/03/1141.jpg

The Uniforms you see in the photo from the book is standard army "Blues - Walking Out" uniform (Formal gear). If you look closely you may note a red stripe down the side of the trouser leg as well as a red band around the cap. In a black and white shot the uniform is easily to mistake for a Police uniform but when seen in colour there is very little similarity.

This diagram is taken also from "Equal to the Task".
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/03/1142.jpg

Berets were navy blue and the cap badge was the RAASC badge which in turn was based on the Order of the Garter.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/03/1143.jpg
Hows that for a selfie? Excuse the fluff, it hides away for years at a time nowadays.
You may have some difficulty finding a RAASC badge as the Corps was disbanded in 1972 and replaced by the RACT. Similar shape badge but they have lost the "Order of the Garter" (which to the youth of today means very little!!)

This Unit was raised and based in Sydney and all operations and logistical planning was carried out from there. Vehicles were despatched to the various areas as they were required, as were the staff, and as the Royal party flew from centre to centre (eg in NSW; from Sydney to Canberra then Wagga and Lismore etc.) the vehicles and staff were "leapfrogged" in advance to these areas. When she arrived at an airport, a car and driver was there to meet her, or in the case of a showground visit (as in the case of Wagga Wagga where I lined up as a tacker) a Landrover was dispatched, as well as a truck or two for the Royal Party's luggage - Massive logistical organisation just in that alone). This was duplicated in every state the Royal Party visited. (With a bit of investigative detective work and endless searching and dating photographs, you may be able to ascertain at what points of the tour your vehicle was actually used for the purpose it was designed.)
Most Country Area visits were centred around larger cities/towns where rail access was available, and this made it easier for, firstly transferring kids from outlying districts to travel to the centre and secondly allowed these vehicles to be ferried around the country in advance by the same means.
This Company provided the Transport for HRH all around Australia at all her stop-over points.
Hence the number of vehicles and staff required for the short visit.
Looking forward to seeing the finished project.
Regards
Glen

Pulled the glass from the old rusty frame ready to install in a better one.
For those that dont know, it is possible to date the glass with the Triplex code etched in.
On the logo the letters T,R,E,X, represent the four quarters of the decade.
Our is in the 50,s so a dot above the R means the second quarter or April, May or June.
The word TOUGHENED has a dot under a letter representing the year of the decade. No dot is 1950, a dot under the T is 51 etc.
In my case the dot is under the U meaning 1953.
The dot for the quarter is over the I where it is not supposed to be, so could be an R or an E.
Most of the dated bits on this 54 model are dated mid 53
These are LHS and RHS screens.
Its amazing to think that after all these years roo shooting etc , the original glass is still intact.

The colour of the originals was called Royal Claret.
I had to make it up from some of the faded original left under the numerous coats and from photos of the one in the Gaydon Museum.
It was too red I thought at first so we added more black. To me it still looked too red so I put a flat black undercoat under it. That looked OK.
It may not be true to the original but it suits me:D

Picked up the Perspex for the rear today.
See how it fits tomorrow. I cant find the proper big headed set screws to hold it so will have to use washers. But hey nobody will know.
Really needs some kind of a clip on cover so when towing on a trailer it does not get full of dust, rain ,etc. Needs thinking on.

It looks good enough that a closed trailer would have its points! How about fitting pipe hoops to the trailer and a tarpaulin over that? Depends of course on your having your own trailer!

We looked at a second hand one yesterday. Bloke said it cost him 6 grand and he has only used it once. we offered 4 1/2 but he knocked it back.
I could build one for less.
We have the single axle you saw with the Tickford on at that wet expo a couple of years ago but if I ad a cage it would go over the max wt hence just a cover to keep the wt down. A full cover would flap and wear out the paint on a big trip.
Another trailer , tandem axle and cage would be the best.

Yes Tony, they have only just been released.
I bought one:cool:
Its modeled off the one at Gaydon so has bits the Aussie ones did not have.
Also they call it an 88" instead of an 86".
Still its quite good though:)
I should ad I got mine from Apex Replicas in W.A. Local rather than OS. Andrew seems a good bloke and is a Land Rover owner as well.

Steve, you better tell us more, is it able to be rescued?

Sorry Steve, just reading back through the thread and you have mentioned that before. I had tried to contact him but no luck.
Why anyone would pay 25000 bucks for a Royal Review then convert it to a ute is beyond me.

Andrew from Apex Replicas from whom I bought the model Review had access to some of Faulls Motors Import Ledgers and found this and sent it to me.
Third line down, a 54 Land Rover to the Royal Tour.
The Month is missing but as its after Nov 13 it is possibly Dec the 2nd as the next line is 1955.

Thoughts in this, Diana, Bob, anyone?

Well I guess we are allowed them.
I had decided to make a new light board to hang on the step. While in autobarn I thought a couple of LED combined indicator, stop, and tail would work fine, so bought them.
Went to fit them up.
No go.
Of course I know diodes only work one way but I have used singles before by swapping the polarity of the wires around. That works on singles but not with a cluster that has a common earth.
Why wont it work? HRH is 1954 and wired positive earth:o
I dont want to change that so its back to the store for a couple of bulb clusters.

Glen (Zulu Delta 534) had a similar problem when he put LEDs on his 80", I think he came up with a solution in the end.

If you are handy with a soldering iron and if you can get into the insides of the light, all that needs to be done is lift each LED and resolder the LED back in, the opposite way around.

Hi Keith,

A mate of mine, Bobslandies mentioned to me quite a while ago that you were after a set of the plates that were used on the old Royal Visit vehicles. I know that you had some repros produced for your Land Rover, but I just tracked down a collector in WA who has a set in his collection. He said he was more than happy to send through some hi-res photos of the plates if you wanted to look at them. I've attached some low-res images. Not willing to trade or sell them unfortunately but for your info.

Cheers,

Sean

Thanks Sean, nice photos.
Arthur Goddard has an original that 1950landy photographed for me. We based the repro on that and I think it came out OK, so that will do for now. Thank your mate, the collector, for the offer. Nice collection.
I would like to make up a Uniform one day like the driver in that pic of yours. I have made up one of the "Dress Blues" like the Tassie Drivers wore.

I appear not to have updated this for a while.
It was not getting any use while I was caring for my late wife so I decided to sell it.
While it was advertised , I had no serious offers. Admittedly it was during Covid so a bad time to sell.
I put it on the UK Land Rover Register and sold it the next day. I would rather it stayed in OZ but thats the way it goes. The buyer organised all the shipping etc , all I had to do was get it to Brisbane Wharf.
Now its for sale again in the UK.
I was sent a link to this .

Well Patrick knows what they are worth now I could not get $30000 here in Oz and I was not going to give it away. The Poms appreciate that sort of thing.
Just used the money from it to buy a new John Deere 5050 Tractor. Coming tomorrow. I cant use the money where I am going so may as well buy something useful. The Stepson who gets the place when I kark it does not like my A414 or my Ford 3000 so might as well sell them. The JD should keep him happy[smilebigeye].
