I swaped this winch for a 48 grill & some labour on a guys 48 firewall about 10 years ago, its taken me about 10 years to find all the bits betweem the motor & winch. The engine brackets are a copy of ones Russelrover had ( thanks Jim) , the winch mounting I made up from an origional the guy i got it off had & the roller brackets I fabricated out of steel using a origional alum one as a pattern & then had them galvanised , then wiped them with week acid to make them look like alum. Got it working late last year . Looks like i,ve got a water leak , probely the rotten after market water pump I fitted last year , had to grind all the bottom of the pump to clear the timing cover & drill all the holes over size so the bolt holes would line up , or may be heater tap needs a new packing .

What brand is yours looks different to the MAP I have bought ?

Series Land Rovers, Options, Capstan winch

Over the years, Land Rover offered a number of dealer options for Land Rovers.. One was the capstan winch made by Fairey as LR Kit 5300.

There are two types there.
The original was the Aeroparts Capstan . This had the mounting plate turned down at the front cross member.
107 wagons and some 86",s came with welded in tubes in the front cross member to suit these winches

The Fairey came later, designed for the 2 1/4 engine and has the mounting plate turned up at the front cross member. Also has a different drive and roller setup. Because the plate turns up the mounting rivnuts are in a different place to the Aeroparts.

I should point out that the early Aeroparts had a alloy base plate that was rounded back and front. These are hard to find. Later and the more common one has the alloy base plate cut flat back and front next to the radiator support panel and the bumper.

There are also three baseplates for Aeroparts winches. The cut off later winch body was likely introduced with the 88/109 Series 1 as the front crossmember was moved forward about an inch and some baseplates are shorter.

Well Mike, Borumbah should have the Aeroparts capstan with the flat sided alloy base and the steel base plate that measures 310mm approx from front crossmember to just over centre of the bumper.
The 80" & 86" steel plate measures 340mm approx.

Also need the brackets in Bobs link (and deep pockets full of money)

The MAP is later, like the Fairey.

Good on you Mike for going to the trouble to get the shafts made! :D

Years ago Diana had some parts made for people who owned winches; I made the aluminium casting shown in one of 1950landy's photos for her.

At Wayne's request I made some patterns for the aluminium parts that support the fairlead-roller - incidentally an excellent job done by 1950landy on his steel copies - unfortunately when I cast them there was too much porosity in the metal The solution is to make a new furnace so that I can use my graphite crucible, but too many other jobs got in the way.

Anyway; be aware that I can make castings if someone is desperate for them, but I will need to clear an immobile S3 out of the foundry before I can do that,

Cheers CharlieI wish you hadn't mentioned this, I still have nightmares, and still haven't been paid for kits I delivered to some people, all in all not a very happy experience. But Charlie's blanks were good price and worked well.

The fellow who welded up the engine brackets, still has the jig and has just retired so may be interested in small batches once his new home and workshop is set-up. I can send him the CAD drawings of the brackets for laser cutting.

It is possible to modify the 2 1/4 engine dog clutch and use the 2 1/4 alloy bearing block on the S1 engine brackets. You have to drill one other hole on the cross bracket to mount the 2 1/4bearing block. You also have to slot the front of the harmonic balancer and have a special stepped bolt to hold the engine side of the dog clutch onto the S1 engine.

I'm not in the least interested in going through the drama of it again!

Thats not it but it can be made to work.
The Aeroparts steel plate is bent down at the back.
Yours , what I think I see from the photo bends up so is similar to the later Fairey. I think I remember something said once that MAP and Fairey were in cahoots sometime ago.

Hi Jim

Out of the exploded diagram shown, what parts can you supply for Capstan fitted into a two litre 86"? PM me if you like.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/12/629.jpg

I already have a Aeroparts capstan, plate and a alloy block for the guide. But I still need the fairlead, engine plates and all the drive line.

I could set to and make them like some have done though.

Another thing someone could help with, is the length of the short crank handle, what is the measurement from the centre of the bend in the handle to the centre of the dog engaging pin?

I have a series one crank handle here that has been lengthened in the past and it would be easy to shorten down to do the job.

I cut mine back to 125mm cent bend to center of pin , which is 136.5mm from out side of bend to center of pin & 117.5mm from in side of bend to center of pin. This was a copy of an origional capstan winch handle a friend had. Hope this helps. Wayne:cool:

Poor Diana! I am so sorry that I dredged up such an awful memory for you!

I only mentioned it, because I remember at the time you explaining the differences between a S2 and S1 winch.

A pox on the ungrateful wretches you treated you so disgracefully!

Hi Charlie,

It was my alloy block that you copied - great job.

About six different tradesmen helped in the creation of all the copies of my early S1 Capstan components. Both Diana and I put in countless hours and travelling and her money to make it happen. We also made some Series 2.25 engine components - I had about seven incomplete engine bracket sets and four later capstan winches - since sold but still have some bits to sort through.

The cost of the of work involved was many thousands of dollars and it will never be recovered because of the non-payers and the sixty incorrect (but paid for) plates were binned before they were done right. That is why we recently decided to sell the excess completed mount sets to try and recover some costs.

In the new year other components will be welded up in the jig as Diana mentioned.

I know what thats like . I used to make S1 bump bars but the buyer had to supply there old crank handle plate . I sold them for $80 galav. Trouble was they were happy to pay the $80 but nobody ever came forward with the plates after I gave them the Bars. I nad about 6plates off old bent bars I had bought , once they run out i kept the incomplete bars for abour 3 years then sent them for scrap .

The Winch brackets on ebay. Are they yours Bob?
Keith

Hi Keith,

Yes, I am selling them but they belong to Diana.
She had originally bought some from the UK but they were incorrect and as I had two (of the three) original plates and we were able to borrow the other to have accurate laser copies made (after the first rubbish batch were profile cut with holes out of position and inconsistently folded) and our friend the welder made up the jig to assemble them.

Every component was replicated, even two of the harmonic balancer special centres that were also never paid for. As these had to be machined, hardened and then ground you can imagine the cost.
All the other kits had a different drive design that was used by the SMA and the machinist who did the work had worked there in the workshops and knew exactly what to do. He has since retired.

Our welder friend has made batches of replicas of all the versions of the Series 1 bumper bars, the centre plate and either spot welded or welded it to the different bar types. As a fabrication company they have to charge GST which is around $20 and you cannot believe how many people want that knocked of the price.

Making good progress across the country in the Defender took a detour along the old telegraph track and did some extreme cross country stuff no track at all. We came out at the Baxter Memorial behind Ciaguna . Made it to Ceduna last night and stayed in a nice ocean view room at the Ceduna foreshore hotel and had dinner won $101 on the pokies to pay for it lol. Tonight we are Coffin Bay national park at a secluded little beach took a bit of low range work to get here but it's worth it no neighbours landrovers only . Pity I can't up load a pic using tapa talk app to show you . Tomorrow heading into Port Lincoln to see a Landrover Wrecker and a guy I met last year with some new old stock steering bits.
