Not long to wait for a very special day for a very special Defender.
Pickles.

Considering it was ordered on January 12th it seems to have taken for ever. The Asian King is just passing Gran Canaria & stopping at a few places enroute to Fremantle. It will be a very special day indeed.

Cheers Nigel

We tracked ours too. I took prints of the progress of the ship during the voyage, I also googled the name of the ship, where details of it were discovered,.....& I took prints of that too!
Gotta be crazy, Pickles.

I've always had a love of ships having grown up on the coast, & nearly went to engineering school in Liverpool, but Derby won out, so aviation for 38 years. Just a little concerned with these car carriers after the Hoegh Osaka incident So one voyage I will be following closely. Even cleaned out the space in the shed, swept, no spiders, crickets or mice!

My Grandad was a "lagger" on the docks, brought up in Bootle, I too went the aviation way and ended up in the RAF as a propulsion tech! Joined when the old school jets were just being phased out, worked in Hunters, Buccaneers, Tri-stars, Tornados and Hawks. Now sell forklifts in Brisbane, how life changes!

Hi Vic, I worked new Buccaneers at Holme Upon Spalding Moor & Phantom F4K's post major service - I was the RR FSR at Hawker Siddeley. Then Nimrods at Kinloss, then Buccaneers 15/16 Sqns, Hawker Hunters at Laarbruck, & Phantoms 19/92 Sqns at Wildenwrath, based out of Bruggen. Then AM-X in Brazil, then got my 2nd career for 20 years with P&W worked most from PT6A-20 through PW4098, and pretty well all between including R2000 with the RAAF & JT3D's! Amazingly I can still hear:D

Hi Tombie, I'm as bad as you & use VesselFinder https://www.vesselfinder.com they have a free AIS Ship Tracking system & the Asian King is just approaching the coast of Mauritania. Looks like a busy seaway! I probably won't get up at 3am, but will definitely be at the showroom the day the vehicle turns up in it's dirty state!

Hi Yolo,

Actually the user name is American caravan related - I always wanted an Avion aluminum caravan - similar to Airstream but rarer! Did my apprenticeship on RB211 related detachments between college, 69 thru 74. Lots of fun especially the Hyfil fan blade problems. Then ended up on ancient Avon & military Spey projects for 14 years! I was in Laarbruck in the early 80's - Hunters & Buccaneers. We had 7 Sqn Canberras in Kinloss on permanent detachment from St Mawgan back in the 70's Nice airplane & great view out of that perspex nose!

I left RR in 1987 & migrated to Australia, & off and on spent time in Singapore, Oz for 8 years, then Singapore & Korea before being retired off. Never worked on the Hawk but did back up on the Adour in the Jaguars at Bruggen - snake series of engines!

I was intrigued to see that there's one each of Heritage 90 and 110 and Adventure 90 and 110 limited editions listed for sale new from a dealer on careless.com.au at the moment. It doesn't say which dealer, but $62/67k for the Heritage 90/110, and $70/77k for the Adventure 90/110. No pics other than just stock Defender ones unfortunately, I guess they're still on a boat somewhere. I thought these were all spoken for long ago?

El Rey

I would think it's possible they are for sale based on my experience trying to buy a Defender from a certain dealer. Pretty sure in my case someone came along looking for (and happy to pay for) a higher spec, at which point I lost out.

There should be enough Defender afficionados with the readies, that ordering one of those models some time ago and planning to charge appropriately would be a safe bet for the dealer. They can always quote that price you saw, and then things change a bit when you're at the dealership and already in love.
'Sorry mate, the manager has told me we have to include another $5000 of extras with this one...'

Also, imagine the foot and car traffic you'd bring in if you had one of them just sitting pride of place in the showroom.

I think there are a few new ones coming on this ship unless they get off before its arrival in OZ. There were what looks like a few heritage ones or those funny green coloured ones.

I stand corrected - they are mostly RHD, probably off to South Africa? The Asian King is headed our way with at least 1 RHD 90". The brochure states "Clear front indicator lenses", so I guess that is normal. Just glad I wasn't out in it today as the rain was torrential here!

Hi Yolo,

We had 7 Sqn Canberras in Kinloss on permanent detachment from St Mawgan back in the 70's Nice airplane & great view out of that perspex nose!

My old man was a Nav on the B 8 out of Larbruuch... lots of perspex nose time, including looking at tree tops at 400 kts with a 'LABS' manoeuvre that went wrong! They picked tree branches out of the U/C in the hanger....

Reminds me of Olaf Ruhan's biography in which he talks about training on Lancasters in Canada - and occasionally returned to base with the engines overheating because the radiators were stuffed with wheat!

Hoegh Target is just turning into the Mediterranean Sea, so probably those Heritage models are destined for the Middle East somewhere. Piracy? More likely waiting for a slot at a port somewhere on the way. Or the tracking system has problems.

You'll find a lot of vessel trackers don't give satellite tracking for free...

I'm guessing it's moved into a non-land based AIS area and will reappear when it gets close to land fall.

My Heritage was shipped from Southampton yesterday 13 Sep on the Faust. Due at Fremantle on 12 Oct, Melbourne 17 Oct and Brisbane 21 Oct.
If anyone else wants to check if their vehicle is on this ship or another of the same line, go to 2wglobal.com (Wallenius Wilhelmsen track and trace) and put your VIN number in the Cargo ID field. Click on Track and the Current Details will come up. If you click on the Voyage Details (CO530-FAT for my car's voyage) you can get a list of ports of call with dates, and a map of current position.

Hi all, new to the forum.. This may be a silly question - I have an opportunity to take over a mate's Adventure 90 order as he is moving overseas and will not be going ahead with his purchase. I am keen on the car but can't understand why its about $15K over the price of an almost similarly spec'd base Defender 90 with the right options. I know there are some bits on the Adventure edition that are exclusive to it, but I am finding it quite difficult justifying paying this premium. I also have an option of ordering a new car to my specs. Looking for some advice as to whether the premium on the limited edition is worth it... Thanks in advance.

Marty90

I think if you look at what you get you'll agree the price is pretty reasonable. If I had the opportunity I'd take it. If you're after a 90 anyway, personally,I'd be kicking myself if I didn't grab this one.

I've ordered a 90 Adventure, had the same problem with the price difference, at the end of the day I stuck with the Adventure because it'll be one of a handful, there are some options that you just can't order and it's the last of the 70 year run!

You can't order any Defender now so it's either this, one that's in build, one in stock or a used one, I'd be sticking me dosh on your mates cancelled order!

Thanks Marty90 and IsVicThere for your thoughts - very useful. There are actually a small number of build slots available (at 2 of the 5 dealers I have rung) which dealers have secured but for which specs (but not body type - 90 or 110) can be changed. So, effectively, one can still build their Defenders to individual spec. Expectedly, there is very little bargaining for these builds.

I am very much leaning towards the Adventure 90, but am now only waiting for my logic to catch up to my emotions! I realize there is not much time for this decision as build slots for the Build Your Own Defenders are being taken up very quickly.

My mate's order is for a Corris Grey 90 Adventure - all I have heard/read about is the Phoenix Orange Adventures .. don't hear much about the Grey ones .. what are everyone's thoughts on the Grey in terms of the colour of choice. I prefer the Grey as a colour but am thinking that, a few years down the track, the Phoenix Orange will be seen as the signature colour for the Adventure editions, which may impact the Grey's exclusivity, which is what the price premium we are paying for the limited edition is all about??

First world problems I know, but am going nuts thinking about this.... my wife is just shaking her head, thinking I have finally lost it!

aj90
20th September 2015, 10:48 PM
Went through the same thought process as you, a new standard 90 or a Heritage 90, heart versus head. With the colour for the Adventure model (which I think would be the go as opposed to a standard model) I would say Grey, but only for personal choice. The orange looks damn ed fine but for me too close to a G4 and perhaps not a colour to put up with every day, although it is a Defender...

Is Vic There

Grey will be fine, I wish I would have gone for grey! I would have also opted for the grey inserts on the seats!

Personally I would order a stock one to your own specifications.
Part of the fun and satisfaction I hope to take part in is starting with a Defender and then creating MY Defender, with all the parts, upgrades, modifications and so on that make it uniquely mine. And for that reason I ordered one closer to stock. Just imagine what you could spend the extra 15 large on.

Go for the grey Adventure 90. They look much better than orange IMO. I wish I'd been able to grab a Heritage 90! ...Or go for your own build and shift the whole paradigm by spending the 15K you save on something made in Australia by a young Australian artist or designer for your home. Rad I know, but hand made and good taste in design is ultimately the theme here.

I was in at Lance Dixon Doncaster dropping off an updated contract today and they've got a lovely Corris Grey Adventure 90 in the pre-delivery yard. Looked great up close, lots of neat details for the interior, different logos on the mudflaps, front grille, badging, black bonnet and rear door, etc all combine really well. From afar you have to know what you're looking for to spot it's a special edition though, it's much more subtle in grey than orange!

Thanks all for your advice and thoughts. As an update on my situation, there are 3 bits of good news and 1 bit of bad news ...

My mate gave his order up as he had a deadline to do this before he would lose his deposit so I did not take it over - but the first bit of good news is that he got his deposit refunded.

Second bit of good news is that I found a Phoenix Orange Adventure 90 with sunhatch and cold climate pack, which are the options that I wanted, so I bought it straight away. I pick it up next month.

Third bit of good news is that, as I was very torn between the Phoenix Orange and the Corris Grey, I did something silly and ordered a Corris Grey non-limited edition as well - built to my spec - build date is Dec 2015 so one of the last ones out of the factory. I have no idea what I am going to do with two Defenders but I'll worry about that later....

The only bit of bad news is I now need to tell the wife what I have done! Any advice on this would be appreciated :)

Give her the Adventure for Christmas!

Hi ... as an update, I did tell my wife... she locked me out of the house, told the kids I am no more and burnt my rugby videos ... yep, her reaction was not half as bad as I thought it would be :)

Seriously though, she was Ok with it... I do change my cars often (but not these ones!) - she said as long as I don't change my wife as often as I change my cars, I am good. As they say, always easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission!

Less than 5 minutes after taking these, I was back in my Keswick Green 90... it looked very 'dark' in comparison!

The Heritage is a great 'nod' to the 'heritage' of the Defender IMHO! I like the colour, the interior, the little touches. Its just a bleeding shame the in OZ they get A/C, steps, radio etc etc... but in the UK, we get NOTHING!

CRAZY! Why not have a single spec vehicle running... NO Fffing idea!

There's a grey 110 Adventure for sale at Geelong LR, 7 seats, sunroof, cold pack, privacy glass etc. After my order got a bit cocked up I was chasing other dealers up looking for a 7 seat 110 and came across it, though I couldn't convince my wife the $20k premium ($84k drive away) was worth it over the standard 110 with all the goodies that I found elsewhere. Bloody tempting though!

Well bloody hell, went to have a look at the 90 Adventure that was going to be mine, there was also a black 90 with leather and black pack, being honest apart from the exclusivity of the Adventure I couldn't see where the extra $13K was! I took my old mate and he called me a knob, saying that I should just buy the standard one! Anyway, they had a 90 demo and I took it for a drive, well I was shocked how great the seats are and after reading posts on how cramped the driving position is I thought it was great! Loved the steering (apart from the lock) and thought it was quite nippy, hated the shift from 2nd to 3rd but reckon I'd get use to it! Will I get use to it, reckon so!
We then had a good look round all the new car garages and you do start to question yourself when you see what you can buy for just under $70K. Seen the new Alfa sports car as well, that is one nice bit of kit! My old mate looked at a Ford Fiesta ST, for the cost of the Adventure I could buy two and still have $10K, bizarre isn't it!

There is a pretty broad selection of great cars available at the price point of a new Defender, but I doubt there's many that will hold their value as well at this point. That's my justification anyway!
What are you going to do, get the standard or the Adventure?

I'm new to the forum and thought I would reveal what I have bought, delivery Jan 2016.

Defender 90, Corris Grey with black pack with alloy wheels, cold climate pack, premium leather, sunroof, black side runners, front mudflaps, front carpet mats,

This was one of two of the last coming in through Lance Dixon, Doncaster, they still have a Heritage 90 that can be ordered if anyone is interested.

Managed to squeeze the sales guy to 54K drive away... thought a pretty reasonable deal.

Hi Chris, Congrats on your order. Our cars are twins - I have ordered exactly the same spec, delivery scheduled Jan/Feb 2016. What colour premium leather seats are you getting? I have ordered the two tone red seats but can change the order, so still deciding.

For others thinking of ordering, despite what salespersons may tell you, there are still dealers with unfilled orders allocated to them which can be spec-changed. When I was looking to buy, I was told by a couple of dealers that I will not find any unallocated slots and that I should buy the cars they had in stock, etc etc at full RRP... which was clearly incorrect. Do phone around to a few dealers before you make your decision . That said, the unallocated slots that dealers have are selling very fast so have to be quick.

For anyone who has a new Defender, or is going to nab one of the last spots, I have just listed a brand new lockable cubby box for sale in the markets section.

Even if you want to upgrade your old interior, this will help.

Easy to install yourself. Don't pay the $910 the dealer charges!!!

Don't ask me why I ended up with this, other than to say that a lack of product knowledge by the salesman, and a subsequent lack of accountability, resulted in me having to stick with it... :censored:

Hi WakeMeForMeals,
My vehicle is one they already had coming in and comes with P6 premium leather pack in black/black... I personally think the red contrast will look a bit 'boy racer' and would consider the grey contrast which looks really good.
What price if I may ask did you negotiate for yours ?

Andrew86

I was tossing up between the black/black or lunar/black contrast, and ended up with the contrast pack. It's just that little bit different. Hopefully the lighter grey isn't too prone to marks

Andrew86 I was the same, couldn't decide between black/black or black/grey, but I've locked in black/grey in the end. I think the grey leather will wear better in the long run than the white contrast stitching on the black/black will.

Thanks Chris. Just thinking aloud, if your car is being delivered in January 2016, I'm pretty sure the specs can still be changed. My car is being built in mid-December and I have till early November to change specs as I want (colour, options, etc). The only thing I can't change is the bodytype (ie - can't change the 90 to a 110 for example). So, if you want to change any of the options, etc, it would be worth giving the dealer a call.

With regards to price, I am actually not too sure how much discount they gave, as funny as that may sound! My contract has a RRP of $59K something. There was a trade involved, so I'm not sure how much more than the wholesale value they gave to me on the car I traded in (which effectively represents the discount they gave off the new car). I just knew the number I would have been happy with as a changeover and they got close ($1000 more), so I just decided to buy the car. What was important to me was getting one of the last of the 90s that are produced so I didn't research price, etc as much as I would normally do. My gut feel is that I got around $3K discount but didn't dissect numbers too much with the salesperson. I have bought a few cars from them so I was relying on them to do the right thing by me on this front.

Today was thinking about the DPF issue's....I believe the heritage and adventurers will have them....I hope we dont have any trouble with them.....Warranty will cover that? I think...

Robbo:)
I can't give you a definitive answer on your DPF issue, but I believe you may find that they are not fitted to your car.
Aussie defenders, to the best of my knowledge are only Euro 1V compliant, which does not require a DPF.
To date, I've never heard of a DPF on an Aussie Defender.

The orange colour is reminiscent of the colour used for Landrovers by the Department of National Development before they changed to a yellow colout in about 1956. The ones drove with the BMR in 1959-60 university vacation job were a mix of the two colours.

Hi Avion8.

Barbagellos also has my 110 heritage...apparently it arrived last few days, so our units were prob on the same boat...

what rust protection are you getting done from southern's....electronic or
chemical?

I also ordered some Melville moons seat covers last week from SA.
they are adding the hue166 tag to the covers for me.

Hi Robbo,

Yes they did both arrive off the Asian King on 8/10. As for corrosion protection I am doing nothing. I did order the paint protection & the fabric protection, but other than that I will just keep it clean - relatively. For the old 107" I do pressure wash the chassis & spray with lanolin after any beach work, it's holding up quite well for a 61 year old.

Hopefully the seat protection will keep the seats looking nice, however if they do start looking grubby they will get covers. I intend as much as possible to use it as is & in 20-30 years time someone can give it a spruce up, and drive it past my nursing home window:D

That is a great idea to have the HUE 166 tag added to the covers. Picking mine up on Friday morning.

Actually, looking at the Heritage 90, what struck me was how far removed both the design and the market were from the 1948 model!

(Farmer/recreation, absolutely basic/many extras, front designed so lights+radiator protected by being set back and in/all the easily damaged bits right on the corners, almost every part of the body & chassis either alloy or galvanised/plastic everywhere less alloy and almost no galvanising)

It is possible - colour is about right, but I am not aware of any of the National Development vehicles ever having been 107 wagons - all that I ever saw or heard of were 80/86/88 hardtops. Rather more likely is that the colour was copied by either Leylands or the original owner from the National Development vehicles. I note that their Series 2 was the same colour - and by that time National Development had gone to yellow. (not sure why, possibly a bit cooler. Both colours were to make the vehicle easy to spot for search parties!)

It's an interesting discussion, I'm intrigued because it is about losing the culture of roving, the unmediated journey and the 'touch' yes; but also the shifting culture of vehiclular priorities.

The simplicity and pragmatism of great design and making-do, has almost succumbed to the micromanaged surety that someone will come and rescue the high tech luxury escape module that has gone into limp mode. How have priorities shifted so far in such a short time? It's like backing up to the cloud. Blind faith. The digital oil level dipstick that tells you that the oil is critically low, goes into limp mode, needs a flatbed truck, but its not really, it just needs a 500ml top up! Hmm... vehicles designed for urbanity, marketed as escaping urbanity, but confirming the utopian misnomer of disurbanity. Yes electrickery is just something to learn how to diagnose and repair in the field; but more than the mechanics, it's actually the ethos, the departure without known destination being mapped, gps'd, researched, without pre-ordained coordinates, that is being lost.

Somehow the freedom to rove far from our own pre-conceptions has become a mere capsule of momentary elixir, based more on the 'look of landscape' than on the finding of country.

John is right, the pragmatism of bush design of the land rover has slowly ebbed away into the heritage 90, but the purity of the first range rovers has vanished much more rapidly, into a luxury behemoth unattainable by the majority. ...is this the fate of the defender too?

...yes re-bore the 4BD1 yet again, it's now a 5.2 litre, the side walls are so thin that it's translucent, the 300tdi has become a 400tdi by default. The cloud doesn't recognise the puma 2.9 re-map and the 1.3 solar Hover Rover just doesn't allow you to 'touch', well, anything outside the humidicrib. A luddite you say? ...no actually, just an earthling, intent on retaining the lost art of roving. A limited edition. Like grasmere green long ago lost its namesake, the forests.

More people "rove" now than ever before.
People "explore" continents not just a continent.
Many farmers I know drive modern Range Rovers, Saharas and BMWs...

And keep the farm hacks right there...

Time marches on; technology improves and people's experiences now are no less real to them than any before them...

I hear you Tombie, each to their own and all life experiences are valid, agreed. Which also means its valid to question the direction things are going in, to critique the 'modern' culture of our times. This is not a criticism of any individual choices, it's a lament for what I see as a major change in Land Rover design ethos. ... I'm not convinced that the direction design and technology are going in has improved the world I live in, nor the experience of roving. It's kind of like minimalism vs clutter, or the more is more/less is more debate. More roving doesn't necessarily mean better quality roving. Infact, I'd beg to differ, I've seen less roving over the past few years, both across this continent and overseas, and more pre-determined destination tourism. Many may like this approach. I don't.

I don't think so. It's more a case of Land Rover repositioning its various sub-brands. Defender, Discovery and Range Rover will be the three distinct tiers of product (which is why Land Rover has disappeared off many bonnets), offering different levels of luxury, affordability and raw capability.

With that in mind, I'll be really interested to see where Defender goes next. It'll be built to a price, but it'll also be built for a clear purpose. It won't look as charming as that special little Heritage 90, but I still think it'll appease the rover within :)

Thanks robbo, I will follow up with Mellville & Moon. Southern LR only had one Heritage, my little 90, & 4 Adventure's.

Mine had that funny smell for a while & I reckon it could have been stickers on the exhaust or paint burning off somewhere. All OK now after 500kms or so. Also had a very special photo shoot yesterday with the car in a studio with the wife & doggy in tow. It was a fantastic experience & we get to see the results on Saturday & choose our gift! We got a "Gift" photoshoot too with Gracie.
I wasn't going to bother with it,..but eventually decided to. I think the deal was that we would at least get one photo for no charge, as our "gift", even if we didn't want any more.
So, we made the appointment, turned up, & decided to go ahead after talking to the photographers. They asked us what we wanted out of the images etc etc, & so, at an arranged later date, we did the photoshoot,...a REALLY fun experience,...about 400+ images were taken!!
A couple of weeks later we were invited back to the studio to see the results, and on the way there I said to Wifey, not to get carried away,..we'd just get our free"gift" image, and that would be it,.....she was Ok with that.
BUT, when we saw the images, I had a totally different view, because the images were brilliant,...awesome in fact. So, we got our free "gift", but we bought a 22 image album at ridiculous cost!!...Couldn't care less, it was a ripper fun day for Wifey & I,...the images are sensational, all in a leather bound album, & something we'll treasure for the rest of our lives.
All part of the joy of owning a Defender.

We got a "Gift" photoshoot too with Gracie.
I wasn't going to bother with it,..but eventually decided to. I think the deal was that we would at least get one photo for no charge, as our "gift", even if we didn't want any more.

Oh no, I see the same happening tomorrow when we go for the viewing with our stylist! I totally agree with it being a fun experience, although getting Hugh in and out of the studio was a tight experience, not sure a 110" would have made it around the corner at the top of the ramp, it was a multi point turn with the 90".

Our photographer must have taken at least 400 photo's, just the dog was on form in the car, in fancy dress, my flat cap, & as for the car well he was photographed from every angle with everything that opened and shut in many different positions. I will let you know how we go.

Lol,.....Sounds good,.....and GREAT fun.
When We did our photoshoot, we were asked what we wanted from the images, and it was decided 50% Defender, 50% us. We were taken to an exterior location, under a bluestone bridge on the banks of the Yarra,......absolute fun day!!
I'll be interested in your opinion.

Hi Pickles,

Ours was all done in a studio with great lighting, half with the car in place, the other half with us in various outfits, with dog, without dog, & other accessories including my french easel & acrylics, which I got liberally coated in, luckily it washes off easily with water.

Yours on the banks of the Yarra sounds splendid, you should post some up if possible or is there a website they can be viewed on? I will if possible post some Heritage shots - if they let me, & maybe one or 2 in the embarassment section - or maybe not:D

I think it's supposed to be a nod to HUE166 which had a silver chassis, and maybe to the galvanised bits? Not to everyones taste I'm sure, but I like it.

Hi Jan,

We did order the tint back in January, as the dealer had a special on the tint, paint & fabric protection. The purchase agreement just states "Street Legal Tint" so not sure what percentage, but it is quite dark - hopefully will keep some of the UV away from my moles!

Look forward to seeing your 110, and you will enjoy that. It is without doubt one of the nicest looking Defenders I have seen both in 90" & 110" format.

I think Street legal tint means darkest legal tint.

It looks really good with the dark tint.

Want to put a bullbar on the heritage 110 and re-paint to silver like the bumper or grasmere green...anyone had anyluck fitting the new defender ARB bullbar, as the grill is a bit larger - like the SVX.
ARB thinks it wont fit...also perhaps the TJM might work... both these bars are ADR compliant.

I like the Rijidij hybrid bar....from Murray....but its not ADR compliant- I suppose that doesnt matter...as long as it has indicators on the bar.... insurance is not that concerned about ADR rules..I believe...anyway, they are mainly for vehicles with airbags...which defenders dont have....

You can fit the early td5 with a/c model arb bar it is the right one to suit the extended grill models. Thats all i fit to defenders now i hate the later one it is too close to the panelwork IMO.

Insurance companies would be very concerned if you fitted something that was not ADR approved.

But as Defender has no airbags you can fit anything to it really. Both ARB bars will fit, as will most Tubular Winch Bars.

Thanks robbo, I take it all back as I did get a very nice response from Nicole overnight, so will be progressing with the seat covers and the spare wheel cover which looks good on your Heritage. Now just need the book the UK owners get & the nice leather case with recovery gear that the Swiss received. Yes but you get the thrill of expectation like a Kid waiting for Christmas. The thrill and eager anticipation you blokes are having is palpable, and you can watch it transit the globe every minute of the day if you want to. The memory of that joy will stay with you forever.
