That is very nice & a bit of a bargain at $71,400 all up. The base crew cab is only $50,200 or so. Wonder how many CKD's that have hanging around in the factory in Malaysia, wouldn't mind one of those for the family in KL, as long a they let us use it when we go to visit?

Yes talked to the insurance today, they dont care about ADR compliant bullbars for defenders...as long as they are tell what you have....Im with shannons...yes the ARB sits too close to body,...i agree and I dont like it too close, but they are a nice bullbar, trouble is, Ive got to change the grill to stock standard to make it fit now,,I'll look at TJM next week...

Just an update guys, just got off the phone talking to Nicole from meliville and moon seats covers in south africa...they are making a dash cover as well for the heritage....I put my order in....because it seems everyone wants seat covers from them around the world....for the Heritage model...they have had a lot of orders from australia....so they are designing/releasing some extra's like dash covers now....I asked her if i can get a cubby box cover as well...see what she says...

thanks

Good girl...she has already marked her territory!

I've been thinking this for a while. Am I right in thinking that LR only said that they were no longer manufacturing/assembling Defenders at Solihull. If that's the case then they can easily move the necessary equipment to, lets says India, to continue there.

So these Defenders would be the last true British and real Defenders but maybe the door is open to Asian made ones (maybe then my dream of one owning a brand new Defender will come true [emoji1]).

Just a thought.

I say that there will be no more Defenders (as we know & like them), made, after January 2016.

They were being built a month or so ago when we were in KL, & the sales manager at the KL dealership had not been told that production would be stopping, even gave us a brochure for the Defender - 110 High Cap pick up, 110 Double Cab & 110 Station Wagon.

The following is some info on where they are built from CKD's: Land Rover Defender 110 Double Cab now in Malaysia (http://paultan.org/2010/11/12/land-rover-defender-110-double-cab-now-in-malaysia/)

Land Rover have never said they would be no more old Defenders, just no more made in the UK. Would be mind blowing stupidity not to continue making them overseas, i.e. India cheap workforce, oh and a nice new 20,000plus military contract.

Like why wouldn't Land Rover build a vehicle aimed at the global mining industry?

Like how could Land Rover let its legendary defence contracts expire due to no new vehicle suitable?

Like why wouldn't Land Rover build a new 4WD work truck and 4WD van range to compete with Toyota & VW?

Oh the mythical new Defender I hear you say? It's mind blowingly obvious! But it doesn't exist... Yet.

These post-limited edition old new Defenders are just as mythical.

There was talk early in the year of Land Rover continuing production of the current shape Defender in India to sell to emerging markets in Asia and Africa, but I very much doubt that's going to happen.

JLR recently announced that they're building a 300,000 unit capacity factory in Slovakia, with production commencing in 2018. I'll bet just about anything that the new Defender will be rolling off that production line when the time comes.

The answers to all your questions where that Ford wouldn't let them. It didn't fit in with their world view. If you look at them from Ford's point of view they weren't stupid decisions, just ones we didn't like.

Besides they didn't exactly cover themselves in glory with their last defence contract.

Jon

Sure, but problem is that Ford haven't built a vehicle that matches the above applications either. No one has, except apparently Mercedes G Wagon, Defenders benchmark. Though I can't see many G wagons on mine sites or in paddocks.

Its been said, that if the tooling goes to India, then they well be a large military land rover contract.

Would also be stupid not to continue selling to all those markets in the world that don't give a toss about Euro 6/7/8 etc.

So no hope of them ever coming back here.

jon3950

Ford would argue they have the F trucks, which apparently do pretty well in the US. Unfortunately we live in that minor market known as the rest of the world.

The G wagen is a good example. Small volume, niche manufacturer and way too expensive to be used for what its designed for, except by the military.

As for Defence contracts, LRs last contract (the UK Wolfs) was a disaster. Ford didn't want to know about that market and stopped LR bidding on the Perentie replacements.

I don't think Ford cared too much about LR, or PAG, despite investing heavily to develop the Disco 3. PAG was Jac Nasser's baby - look how quickly they got rid of it when they gave him the flick. Anyway Ford have gone now so they can get back to building real Land Rovers.

Unfortunately what I think you want the new Defender to be ignores the commercial reality. Sales of traditional Land Rovers have been dwindling since the '80s. Even in their biggest market, British farmers, they've been losing sales to Japanese utes as people have been willing to trade load carrying ability and strength for more creature comforts. Even the mining market is going this way. Add to this the increasingly restrictive regulations in LR's major markets and we'll never see a vehicle like the current Defender again.

For the new Defender to be sucessful it will need to have much broader market appeal than the current model. I think the markets you have identified are important, but it cannot ignore the recreational market either.

Cheers,
Jon

MrLandy

F Trucks are stupid, big and ugly, which is why they don't sell any volume in 'the rest of the world'. Although the ford ranger is heading that way.

Otherwise some good points John. I'm enjoying your perspective.

And if you're right re Defender, I rest my case. Defender is finished.

There will be no "military contract"....ever again.
There hasn't been one for years, so why would there be one in the future.
If you don't believe Defender is finished, no worries at all,...we're all entitled to our opinion, but remember you heard it here first!!!, because,...."It is finished"!

No argument from me on that one.

Defender as we know it is finished. How can it not be? We're lucky it wasn't replaced sooner - and I think if it had been replaced with some of the ideas they have had, it would not have become the icon it is today.

It can't go on forever and now is a good time to replace it, as LR are probably in the best state they have ever been in. Defender needs to evolve, like the Range Rover and Discovery have and become a class leader again, instead of an enthusiasts vehicle.

Jon

Thanks Avion. But it's just the usual condescending dribble that's been trotted out for years, about comical steering wheels and what the Defender 'lacks' rather than everything we know that Defenders are, and that every other vehicle on the road today lacks. The only comical aspect of the article is that somehow the writer managed to bruise himself black and blue while driving it! :Rolling: ...and I fail to see how $54K for a Heritage Defender is "eye-watering", when virtually no other real 4WD is under $50K ... It's the bargain of the century!! ...and no other Land Rover is under $80K anyway.

Thanks MrLandy, I thought it was one of the better articles I have read, at least the author is going to miss the Defender. I totally agree with you on the pricing, you can't even get a Prado for this amount. I liked the bit about the bruise's, so far I've only shinned myself on the tow ball receiver, not being very careful getting stuff (the dog) out of the back.

Sounds exciting.

Does anyone know the port list that the ships hit in Australia?

My 90 is between Durban and Fremantle right now. It gets to Fremantle around the 18th/19th and I'm trying to see how long before it lands in Melbourne? Dealer is saying around the 1st of January, but they had told me it was still to depart Durban when I had seen it already depart 3 days prior.

Thanks

Never mind. Found it on my own on WW's website (https://www.2wglobal.com/webapps'minHt=480&htMethod=bodyLastElem&frameId=145006123225785020&url=https%3A%2F%2Fschedule.2wglobal.com%2FSchedule RWD%2F)

Mine hits Fremantle on the 18th, and then directly to Melbourne on the 23rd. So I'll probably be up for a wait over Christmas and potentially New Year. I wonder if it will just sit there for a week while people are on leave? If so, I'll be getting my 90 hopefully sometime in the first couple of weeks in January.

Looking forward to see how it compares to my 2003 90 that I used to have.

Just a standard one, but I decided to get a few options as there wasn't much to add when I bought my first 90. I ended up getting premium heated seats, black pack, and a few other bits.

Trying to work out the best way to swap out the continentals for some BFG AT's at delivery. The dealer doesn't want to do it, so I may see what a tyre shop will give me on a trade in.
