[bawl] that's terrible. One less on the road now.....

Yeah. It's now on the beach!

I can hear the seagulls squawking!

I'd have a crack at saving it. I wouldn't call it irreparable... Insurers would have a different opinion though.

There is no way I would, even for a very low price. Too much work/cost removing and replacing everything. It’s a wrecker.

"What's the worst that can happen, it rusts like a toyota out of the mines " I had to laugh at this. Long ago I ran a taxi in Perth and picked a bloke up one night and he was telling me about his "one owner near new Troopy".
When I saw it outside his house it was obvious it'd had a respray, just too new looking to be true. This was about the time when it was known that mines sold their stuff to auction houses who then advertised them as 1 owner with a private address on the books. Like the cleaner or something.
I told this bloke about it and he was so shaken when I said the mines use saline water on the roads as it's better at sticking the dust I don't think he would have slept that night.

Over the last weekend and today;

Fitted an Ex Box;

- Sub cable too short. Still working on that one,
- Didn't change over the wiring. I'll wait until I have a bit more experience in that area first

Fitted (but not connected) an in car charger for a Thumper;

- All that remains to do is connect to an active 12v. Would this work? Double Blade Fuse Socket Wire Tap | Jaycar Electronics (https://www.jaycar.com.au/double-blade-fuse-socket-wire-tap/p/SF5115)

Next Weekend

- Start on the Traxide light/driving light upgrade

I went a bit weird and attached them directly to the fresh air manifold(the air manifold for cabin air not the engine). I used 3M VHB tape and self tapping screws(yes I know it was plastic, however it did the job).
If I had any talent I’d take a photo, in fact I will but I’ll do that when I’ve finished the whole job.

Time taken so far, four hours. However that was broken by talking with mates on the phone(completely unrelated to the job at hand) and chatting to a fellow Defender driver who popped in(Hi Allan).

Great bit of kit. Been a real journey trying to get installed. I was recommended a certain auto electrician, he had one look and said “Couldn’t be bothered”, that was despite my insistence I was happy to pay for hours on the job! He reckoned it would take days.

In my defence I was under the pump at work and had zero time. I’ve now some time so in it went.
The instructions do seem daunting however Tim has done a great job of making them very detailed. I read them several times over several days so my unconscious could have a think before my conscious fat fingers got at it.

Good Luck

Personally I think he didn’t want to have a go as there was some thoughtful placement required.

That's where I put mine, relays mounted to a piece of flat steel attached direct to the mudguard inner, been there nearly 3 years through mud and water and the Anne Beadell highway corrugations with no issues whatsoever. There was JUST enough length in the wires supplied by Tim to reach the battery box for that spot.

Public weighbridges, on the highway, when they are not manned some have "self check available", a free service.

Or you can pay for it at major servos. Intended for trucks but it is not uncommon for 4x4's and or caravans to use them.

nice! Options for the 90 are a bit thin now that FrontRunner has stopped bringing in the LH & RH sill tanks.

The BD 55L isn't the prettiest thing but practicality won over. That and being sick of dealing with jerry cans on the roof.

For water I put a 50L flexitank under my false floor with outlet via passenger door. It's not perfect, but fit for purpose given the amount of use it gets lately. Plus it doesn't slosh, that really get on my nerves.

Have a trip across the telegraph track along the bight coming up. This was the last mod for it, and should be it for a while.

Not that i could find. I'm not a big fan of ~80kg on one side of the vehicle, nor how low it is. But travelling remote long distances i was flat out of options unfortunately. 120kg of diesel on the roofrack (plus roof tent etc) wasn't a lot of fun.

Shingleback poly sill tanks look like pretty neat profile, but not available for 90 yet.

The 90 is space constrained- moving it any further forward would impact on the Diff pumpkin thru its range of motion. Any further aft, and it's going to be past the rear cross member. Any lower, and it's be hung up on all those gnarly tracks you drive Damien!

I'm in the same boat. Fuel range <500km is pretty standard in my 90. Doesn't get you far with much confidence touring the outback, but I don't want to tear it apart offroad on the fun tracks either...

Yes ive searched a lot on this and the only thing close was putting something in the rear cabin which I don't want to do as it takes away from my storage. I know it would affect the harder tracks stuff but was just hoping maybe! The outback would be hard with a 90 I'd imagine. What you carry? Two jerrys? That's what I do. On the roof rack. Got a leaky intermediate shaft re-sealed in the transfer case, and had my diff replaced at 35,000 km...Cannot believe they never sorted the diff issue for the final vehicles! Still waiting to see what the failure mode was. Diff was quietly talking to me. A very quiet wine at 60 km/h. Almost all suburban work unloaded!

*NOTE TO ALL PUMA OWNERS - especially the new ones!*

PLEASE inspect your drive flanges! It has been discussed before on many threads, but for all new Land Rover owners who aren't that mechanically inclined, check them out! Simply remove the rubber cup over the hub. They all rust and chew themselves out because there isn't grease in this location. For reference, any thing that is splined should be greased or immersed in oil. LR will happily replace the flanges, clean the axles and re-grease with CASTROL SPHEEROL EPL 2. Make sure they use this grease, as it is for extreme pressure locations. If out of warranty, do this yourself with either the same or equivalent grease. I don't know how long the standard flanges will last, but the truck drives pretty well so far. No expense to me (thank goodness).
Reducing the driveline slop or shock will help preserve your diffs and the venerable LT230. LT230 centre diffs, and probably the thrust washers, can suffer from failures due to excessive slop. It's a simple fix, but worthwhile in the long run.

Well, I’ve had enough of the woeful windscreen washer jets, so purchased an Engineering Research Billet washer jet replacement. Anything aircraft billet aluminium has got to be better!
Also, as my two year old Australian made upgraded radiator is leaking red stuff everywhere, I’m going to toss it, and purchased an Allisport aluminium updated radiator from the Motherland. Bit of a production delay of up to six weeks unfortunately, but these are radiator porn, and they say 35% more efficient.
This company supplies the Dakar racers, so that’s good enough for me.

I was thinking about this on our Chrissie trip from Sydney to Hobart and return. I remember some manufacturers (esp trucks and busses) had a spray on the wiper - connected by some small dia rubber tubing to the outlet near the windscreen. Has any tried this approach. The issue I have with my sprayer is the pressure vs the wind so the water doesn't get far enough up the windscreen to be effective when the old girl is doing hwy speeds.

This used to be a common mod on rally cars back in the day. Disconnect the jets so you could get some volume and just run tubing straight up to the wipers. Tie it on to each blade very close to the windscreen. Was done to easily remove mud and worked a treat.

I bought one of these radiators from Allisport and it only lasted 4 years
The originals are a more cost effective way of doing it
There was actually an INCREASE in operating temperature using the updated radiator
I suspect when things got out near the edge the uprated radiator would give cooler operating temperatures but I never witnessed this even though I lived in the Pilbara

Hey djam1 this is very concerning to hear! I was considering upgrading my Defender radiator to an Allisport. Which vehicle did you have yours in? Did you change radiator because the original wasn't coping in Plilbara heat?

I had no issues with the Pilbara heat even with the standard radiator
I had it in a 2002 td5 defender I did it because I liked the idea of a higher capacity unit
They are a beautifully made thing but Allisport were uninterested when it failed (this is fair enough after 4 years)
I figured I can replace the standard radiator every couple of years as a service item and still be in front

I towed a trailer up Horrocks pass yesterday in 40 degree heat and with the standard radiator only got to 102 degrees C

Picked the 90 up after getting an Ashcroft ATB centre diff fitted. With the previously installed Ashcroft ATB diffs front and rear this has resulted in eliminating ALL slop in the drive line.

After the BAS remap, replacing the diffs has given the best bang for the buck of anything I've done to the car.

Very happy.

Also had the adapter shaft replaced with the Ashcroft shaft as a preventative measure while the transfer case was off, hopefully a bullet proof drive line now.

About $2500 supplied and fitted for the ATB front and rear, hard to split out the cost of the centre diff as other work was done at the same time but the centre diff cost around $1200 plus whatever the labour is for removal and refit of transfer case etc, all work done

Atb centre diffs cost about $550-$600. Tcase full rebuild kit cost around $300.
Front and rear atb's cost around the same as the centre atb, bearing kits around $100.
So if you buy direct and can fit them yourself, pricing is pretty good. (Add shipping to that)

The centre atb is a great bit of gear, i'm glad i fitted one.
Front atb, i'm not 100% sold on.

What does an ATB do in the centre diff? I thought an ATB was like an LSD?

An ATB is an ATB. Regardless whether its positioned between left/right axles (replacing front/rear diff centres), or positioned between front/rear prop shafts (replacing centre diff centre).

With the Ashcroft centre ATB installed - the CDL still operates as it does normally. This is of course essential due to the way an ATB works (i.e. when there is no torque on the driveline it behaves like an open diff)

"No torque on the driveline" is a situation that routinely happens when one side of a diff is free-spinning (e.g. wheel in the air), or whenever there is no drive being applied to the driveline (throttle neither driving or trailing, or transmission in neutral).

It'd be really nice if the front/rear diffs were also lockable when an ATB is installed since they too act as open diffs in a "no torque" situation. Having traction control does mitigate this.

What does an ATB do in the centre diff? I thought an ATB was like an LSD?As tact said.
Fitting it also eliminates almost all backlash in the t/case, the clearances in the at b are much tighter than the open diff.

It improves dirt road driving big time too, the reason most of us fit them.
It eliminates the hunting that can occur between front and rear diffs in loosish stuff with the open diff and reduces a lot of the understeer you get with locking the centre diff.

I had the centre diff atb with elockers front and rear and this was in my opinin the perfect setup. I know it costs more but the ability to lock a particular axel when needed is great.

Just theoretically...
Say, a defender with front and rear ATB going steep and uneven down hill.

One side of wheels will have more traction so the ATBs will bias the torque to the other side, right? Will this will rotate the vehicle and may result in a roll over? In this case, an unlocked diff will be better?

P.s. about to get all three ATBs

Cheers

If you have TC to stop wheels from spinning, do you see any advantage in an ATB?

Absolutely. Plenty of guys write that once they install ATBs they rarely see TC activate. (About the only time TC is needed will be with a wheel in the air - where ATBs are useless)

The ATBs are way more “proactive”, doing their thing while we there is load on the driveline.. whether in the bush or the morning commute. No input or attention required.

Comments about selectable lockers being more desireable because they are selectable (can be turned off) are misguided. (1Nando - were you thinking of Detroit’s aka Aussie lokkers?). ATBs never “lock” so never suffer from not being able to be turned off.

What I do in that circumstance is feather the brakes to provide a bit of preload on the driveline. Let antistall drive against light brake pressure downhill.

Need to do this with open diffs too. If you don’t and a wheel loses traction completely , the other wheel on that axle is useless to you also, as far as retardation goes. (Open diff or ATB )You can end up with a runaway. (And if you had a centre ATB and centre diff unlocked - a single wheel losing traction up or down hill will unload ALL 4 wheels! Always lock the centre diff on steep up/down slopes!)

(edit: just to add - regardless open, fully locked, ATBs or TC the peril of going sideways with one side having traction and one side without is the same. You just need to always be ready to hit throttle to keep the pointy end downhill)

[...]I prefer selectable lockers rather than atbs which work when theres slip. Each to thier own

See that’s where ATB action is often misunderstood: ATBs don’t “work when there’s slip”, not in the sense that slip is needed before they work. (That’s more like TC, detects slip then brakes a wheel)

Imagine instead you had to slide a bolt on a gate latch. But someone is pushing on the gate causing the bolt to bind up and resist moving. If there is no weight in the mechanism the bolt slides no worries, no effort at all.

Thats how ATBs work. When there is weight on the driveline the helical gears bind up more inside their pockets even when no “slip” is present - Eg. when travelling in a straight line.

Ie. before there is even a hint of “slip” the ATB is already ready to resist any tendency for either half shaft to rotate at different speeds.

When there is a difference in rotational speed of half shafts (or wheels), such as turning or slip is present, then the helical gears rotate in their pockets (reluctantly due to the weight/torque on them and friction against their pocket). This friction then makes it hard for the half shafts to rotate at different speeds.

Think of ATBs as simply open diffs that are not very good at being diffs. They bind up internally whenever there is some weight on the driveline.

I think I understand how an ATB would work cross axle, particularly since my previous D1 had a rear Detroit auto locker.
However, what about a centre ATB? Is it kind of like a way of varying the front-rear torque split infinitely depending on load, compared with it being open or locked 50:50? When is that most useful?

It’s exactly like a normal diff turned 90 degrees..

Just think of the front/rear prop shafts (with centre diff between them), as you would think of the left/right half shafts on a regular axle (with a regular diff between them)

Curious here for my own benefit... Could u please explain as to why?

Would u say the same for a vehicle that doesn't have TC?

Was fitted to my highly modified D1 so no TC.

Rear locker wants to just point you at the sky, driving the wheels at the rear and forcing the front to lift regardless (if not driven to avoid such).

Click in the front diff, on a high grip but cross axle situation and then attempt to steer - almost impossible - stresses on the steering increase significantly.

In a straight line not so bad but trying to exit with a turn becomes a challenge with the vehicle wanting to go straight at all costs.

ATBs however will load up but allow some steering, rendering vehicle control back to the operator.

In a cross axle situation I'd assess the line im going to take, engage my locker/lockers if both needed and focus on driving my line and my throttle input and complete that drive as slowly as possible with no loss of control or wheel spin. Less stress on drive components and less damage to the track.

Ps i always locked my centre diff atb as soon as i suspected i might have a loss of traction, i never waited for it to slip and then engage. Serious 4wding to me is to drive as slow as possible and as fast as necessary. Control is everything

Tombie

Agree. Although many of the tracks I drove had one line.. that was all there was... and several weren’t a crawl as you couldn’t clear the section.

To each their own though.

There are trails I can drive with TC that a locked combo just couldn’t do without pace and/or damage occurring.

Ashcroft ATBs AND Eaton truetrac are pretty similarly engineered (helical gears in pockets). Torsens are engineered differently. But they all behave similarly.

Absolutely! - had the driver in that video had a little brake applied the vehicle would have walked through those crossaxle situations easily.

I routinely use right foot braking and let antistall drive the throttle on easy stuff like that, and medium hard situations. On seriously harder stuff where a bit more aggression is needed (ie even fully locked diffs won’t let you idle up) I left foot brake and right foot feeds in just enough fuel to keep things moving. (TC just makes it so much easier and more effective - but I do not have TC on my barge).

Wired up a reversing camera today. Was on the cards for the near future, but they were 25% off at SCA and not much more then an equivalent ebay one (without the postage wait from China etc), so i figured why not?

It's one of those clip-on the rearview mirror units, and now, the mirror has a habit of slowly sagging whenever it can (especially in warmer weather). Time to brainstorm a solution.

Answer was to pop the ball of the mirror arm out of its mount, cut a piece of thin strong material such as leather or a chamois, wrap it around the ball and push it back into place.
Now it only droops on badly corrugated roads.

Removed the indicator lights from my ARB bullbar to find the replacements have a square plastic plug not round like the mounts on the bar. Off to ARB, yep they sell replacements for nearly half i paid on line and the ARB version include the round plastic plug. With a moment of reflection standing in the ARB store. Do i pay $40 for ARB lights (having forked out $70 for LED lights) and be done with it or off to Bunnings to mock up something to make use of the LED's. Opted for the later and now will start butchering the new lights to make it mount to the ARB bar.

This is, hopefully, the final step to get the Defender back on the road after a long and painful 18 months to get the defender back and rectify everything that was butchered. Off to get blue slip tomorrow.

The easiest thing was the engineering. Engineer signed off on every mod i have. Didn't blink at 35's and 3" lift. It is approved for 120mm over standard. The mod certificate reads like a parts catalogue. It will be laminated and put in the pouch behind my seat just in case i have to explain myself to the boys in blue.

Do you mean for the dual battery setup? If so I'm still not finished but have a clamp battery terminal for the negative at the moment. But depending on how well it holds up I may put a ring lug on it and put it under a nut secured terminal.
Clamp terminal has been fine so far (the picture with the 2 batteries has a projecta multiple terminal thing on it, with a main negative clamp)
The battery picture was before I started to put all the dual battery electrics in.

Since day one, the glare hitting my face and the top of my head via the sunroof was always abit of a nuisance. One day, i just snapped haha. Swung into autobarn and grabbed a pack of static-cling window shade film and got to work.

I toyed with the idea of getting it tinted but the constant chit chat about tinted sunroofs shattering kept scaring me abit, whether it's true or not, i wasn't gonna risk it (yet). $15 and 15 minutes later, this is a great solution that's blocked off a large chunk of the rays (yet still allows me to check out the skies if and when i feel like it). If i decide one day i want it blacked out, then i may just go super dark tint or get it wrapped in some automotive vinyl perhaps? We'll see.

I cut off the square plug with the dremmel and bolted them to the Bar with M3 bolts secured with spring washer and loctite (M4 don't fit the hole in the light). They sit recessed enough to be protected. My Bar is looking tired but the smoked glass would come up a treat on a new Bar. The funny thing, i only bought the new lights because 1 light was out and i'm up for rego. On inspection they were rusted so the cause was thought to be a dodgy connection. As it turned out it was a dodgy earth connection at the OEM indicator on the facia from which the lights take their feed. $80 in parts, a trip to ARB and Bunnings and 3 hours of wiring in and fault finding to work that out.

Its the colour, Tombie. (Galway Green) Somehow, even with all the scratches and dents, it still looks good. Specially in pics. Up close and personal is a totally different matter.
(Actually you can see jungle pinstriping in those pics above if you look hard)

LR Malaysia had an “assembled in Malaysia” deal. All the defenders land in Malaysia as flat packs from the UK and are assemble in Kulim (town in Kedah State). Dodged some of the import duties.

The utes were also considered commercial vehicles and dodged a large chunk of sales tax too.

I paid RM148,888 brand new in 2013. Back then that’s about AU$49,000. How does that compare to prices in Oz in 2013?

You’d have gotten better value for your $52k dual cab compared to my $49k (equivalent).

There is some “local content” in the Malaysian built Defenders - for example you would likely have gotten real LR half leather seats standard and Traction Control. I got no traction control and the seats in my Defender, while they are full leather and reasonably nice, would likely be locally sourced hides from “Klang lembu”! 😁 (water buffalo from nearby town, Klang)

Not sure what else may have been left off my barge, or What other local substitutions would have been incorporated in the build - As compared to what you got in Oz.

The new Toyos are an order of magnitude quieter and less harsh on the road compared to the old Maxxis they replaced.

But that’s just a function of the age and wear in the old tyres. I cannot remember well enough what the Maxxis were like when they were new - to give you a better evaluation. Sorry.

The Maxxis had passed their prime big time. Still had enough tread depth to be legal but the compound had “gone off”, most evident by how they almost zero grip on wet tarmac on recent wet weekends. They had a hard life on and off road in the 30k+ and 3yrs I had them. (They were close to use-by date when I bought them cheap in Malaysia).

To their credit the Maxxis never punctured, staked, or rolled off rims on individual jungle drives that saw 1-2 other vehicles have to park up and change tyres. They didn’t fly apart when I pushed them hard on tarmac either - generally “driving it like I stole it” as well as occasionally travelling well over their 140km/h limit, and pushing them into 4 wheel drifts on bent bits of dry tarmac - all courtesy of the BAS 170AB tune.

And I am absolutely loving the “plush” ride the new Toyos are giving now while they are new. It’s like the suspension has been upgraded - on tarmac. Not feeling every little crack in the tarmac, and gentle, not jarring, over larger bumps.

Was afraid that the Toyos, with their higher load index (123 v 119 for the Maxxis), would give a harsher ride. Not so, so far quite the opposite.

Cheers Tact, the Toyos sound like they're worth a punt.

...I'm trying to decide whether to stray from the tried and true Bridgestone 661's - 3 sets so far over 16 years - including years in the harsh rocky bush and deserts of northern WA, Territory, SA as well as significant highway kms - only one puncture only from a tek screw..
my current set have done 75,000km in 3 years and still have another 10,000km in them legally, but the small siping is worn down and with winter on the way it's almost time for a new set. I've always been happy with the 661's highway ride and performance out bush, so why change? ...well it's probably just yearning to try something new after so long, but it's an d pensive gamble!

I'm also interested in the Michelin LTX AT2's that Michael writes about here: Michelin XLZ alternatives. (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/255151-michelin-xlz-alternatives-2.html)

...but I like the look of the Toyo's vertical sidewalls and bigger tread. Do you know what sidewall rating they have? Is it 3 ply like the AT2's and 661's?

Has snyone one bad experience of all three tyres? Bridgestone 661's, Toyo Open Country and Michelin LTX AT2? I guess it's partly the classic trade off between off road trip and on road performance, when many of us do lots of both! The Michelins look a little more bighway biased and quieter than the 661's while the Toyo's are more off road biased than both. Do the MT blocks reduce wet bitumen grip much over the other two?

Hmm the conundrum of choice!

Responding to comments above:
- The Toyos are a very expensive option. ($440 ea incl GST)

- They are 3 ply side walls. (The expensive 123P rated version. You can get a grey import version that’s 119P rated at close to $190 cheaper per tyre!, not sure what ply side wall that one has )

- Definitely MT tyres lose out to AT or HT tyres where it comes to wet tarmac.

To to be honest - if I had found AT tyres in a reputable brand at the size I want (255/85R16) then I’d have seriously thought hard about going AT this time.

I really like the 255/85R16 size for my Defender. Not a lot of choice in the market in that size.

Zeros

Yep that's a serious investment in tyres, but sometimes it's just good to get exactly what you want! ...Might be a bit beyond me though. 661's are $300ish each.

I prefer 235/85R16's and even 7.50R16 if good tubeless were readily available. I prefer the way they roll on road and how well they elongate on sand. When I'm ready I'll price the Toyo's and Michelins in 235/85...compare with 661's.

Cheers...and anyone with comparo thoughts on these three serious tyre contenders please share...

Just the left and right hand side of the rear cross member right behind the rear wheels middle was ok. Could be due to the amount of dirt tracks the car drives on may be blasted by the dirt and gravel

Only while new? Or right throughout their life?

If i remember correctly the Maxxis Bighorns were not too bad on wet tarmac when they were new too. But that sure dropped off as they aged/wore.

On the second set on the D2 and never had a noticeable reduction in grip through their life.

May be different on your longer wheelbase.

When I removed my snorkel on my 2012 110 to fit Nuggets great sealed air box kit, the paint was heavily blistered due to moisture.
I sanded it back, primed, and repainted prior to continuing the installation.
Sometimes it pays to check these things before any major issues.

After tearing a tread block off my BFG 265/75/R16s’, I thought I’d try a different tyre.
Goodyear Wrangler MT/R 265/75/R16, so I fitted a set of four today.
$365 each fitted, which I thought is a good price for Far Nth QLD.
I immediately braved the floods here, and drove 40Kms, to try out the balance and noise.
Just a smidge ( metric smidge, not imperial) louder than my KO2s’ which I’m happy with, and excellent balance.
Great, so let’s see how they cope for the next 60,000Kms.
Ken.

It's been a while for me too.
Today I made a new bodgy (AKA) prototype door handle. The factory one nudged my knee slightly and it eventually became a kind of Guantanamo torture session. I'll send it off to my leather wiz brother in Toowoomba. He'll make a shmicko job of it, I'm sure.

Headed down to Willis in Friday night, drove up to Native dog via Macfarlaines and Cobberas tracks then up to Charlies creek for a couple of nights. Went down to Kings plain fopr a swim on Sunday and then came home via Buckwong to Tom Groggin and back to Yass via Tumbarumba and the Hume this afternoon. Met some nice people from the LROCV at the top of the hill at Kings plains too.

Coberras isn't too bad, there's some scalloping on the last bit of the descent down to the Ingegoobee river which would make it interesting going up in the other direction and the steep rocky climb after the Cowombat flat gate is reasonably challenging. I needed a tug up it but a couple of Disco 4s on the trip got up OK on their own.

Thanks. We’ve only got time for a short trip this Easter so thought the Davies High Plain area might be the go. I’m hoping that the track up from Tom Groggin still being closed may mean it’s a little less crowded than usual. If time permits I’d like to get down to MacFarlanes Hut too as I haven’t been there for years - I remember that climb near the gate being a bit of a challenge in the D3.

Oh, and what I did to my Puma on the weekend was to start fitting my new winch.

The cargo rail was from ebay - only place i found it already anodised black. Installed it with 1/4" CSK structural rivets and sika.

Maxtrax pins were from the roofrack shop.

I made the brackets from 2.5mm alum sheet with a rattle-can paint job.

The t-bolts for the cargo track were a PITA to find, and came from the UK. I have 4 spares though.
