I could be wrong, although I am fairly certain the AK10 was an one-off, reversed engineered Bantam BRC 40 that was captured in the Philippines. IRC production of vehicles related to LC commenced in the early 50's.

Very true, but at the end of the day if people are to stupid to understand that the Land bruiser is overpriced and overrated let them get ripped off.
When you run the numbers of the hilux against the other dual-cab 4x4's on the market there is nothing that makes it stand out against the others, the only difference is you pay more for that badge on the grill.
There is nothing that makes the 200 series stand out against any other in the market either, except more fuel use and a bigger price tag.
Same story when you move into the pathetic compact suv market, the rav4(****box) is mid pack in terms of features, power, economy, cabin space but right near the top in pricing.
Moving on to the hatchback market there is offerings that offer more features and are far better priced.
At the end of the day Toyota's marketing in Australia has done a fantastic job in fooling people into thinking they make a superior product.
I think more and more people are choosing to not pay Toyota money going by the amount of Jeeps,Hyundia's and Kia's there is getting around.I find it interesting that Tojo didn't fit the mighty D4D to their unbreakable 79series,maybe they thought it wouldn't be unbreakable. Pat
Disco man your spot on!
Definitely NOT wanting to hijack the post!
Up until tomorrow, I have a hired 3 y.o Navara in the garage.
Wish I didn't have to work really, coz I'd leave it right there.
Seats..... yeah, it has some
Performance... OK if you like 2800rpm in 5th at 110k
Suspension..... yet to find any. Searched in both the users manual and underneath.... it's a void:( Did a Google search of 'Navara Suspension' and came up with 'No Matches" LOL
Now I've had lower back poroblems for 35 years. Haven't had to do anything for the last 10 (since I owned a D2 funnily enough).
After 1 week of the Navara..... my back is stuffed again:(
Can I get the physio deducted from the bloody rental of $89/day?
yeah right.
What a **** box!
Interesting.
Dads got a D22, last of the non common rail ZD30s ( )
Drives nicely, suspension is a bit harsh but so is my D2 on HD coils.
Steers, stops, comfortable. Only fault he's had is the left hand side speakers stopped working. And he ain't exactly big on maintenance. Like...at all...
Guess some of them are okay.
Only complaint I have is it needs another gear. Nearly doing 3k at 110.
Interesting in reading peoples comments, etc....
I would have to agree that the prices u pay are high..... but....
It's funny that when u go to the remote areas & talk to the local mechanics, etc or talk to the mining companies, etc and u ask them which is the more reliable make of car.... u will "nearly" always hear their reply be - Toyota.
The mining companies have tried other makes of vehicles with some success but I know Rio Tinto tried moving from Toyotas to the Ford Rangers, but have now found that it's not cost effective due to all the breakages, etc and now are wanting to move back to Toyota.
The RACQ mechanic I spoke to up in Mossman who covers a HUGH area in breakdown services, said the same thing..... Toyota is the only make that he would pick going from what he has experienced from covering vehicle breakdowns, etc.....
I know people will disagree and all that, and the people that I've spoken to could be bias, etc, but Toyota do make a reliable vehicle, but are they perfect - No; Do they have problems - Yes, but maybe not to the same degree as other makes. All modern 4WD's these days are a risk for those that truly want to use them as they were intended.....
I know I will cop a bagging from my comments, but as one who has always had Toyotas as 4WD's (& still does) but also has tried a Nissan Navara (never again) and who now has moved into a Discovery Tdi to see what they are like, I would always lean towards a Toyota if I had to make a choice....
Does Toyota have the same character as a Landrover.... probably not.... are the LR's just as reliable.... I'm yet to find out.... though I hope so as I become familiar with my Disco-1 driving to/from work and start using it for its intended purpose of going bush.....
For the little time I've had my Disco ( & with very limited experience & knowledge of LR's), I've totally enjoyed driving it and its comfy to ride in and I hope I have many years of joy in driving it, but it wouldn't be a fair comparison in comparing it with our 150's Prado (Old vs New, etc).
Let the bagging begin.....
I can offer some comment on the mining company side of Toyotas i work for a big mining company and we have varied between Toyota and Nissan for a while because the Toyotas didn't offer passenger air bags so then we went to Nissan and they were pretty hopeless so then they went to Hilux and they didn't handle the crap we treat them with and then we went to the new V8 utes and wagons which i must say cop and absolute flogging you couldn't believe how they get treated just rank!!
They have lasted pretty well considering then they now have a push on cars having 5 star ANCAP rating as that reduces the chance of a roll over to start with so they think they can get away with not having a ROPS in the car, so with the 5 star push we have changed to Auto Ford Rangers.
The Rangers just can't handle the punishment we give them first they are auto so they won't go in to park if they get clogged up with mud then they won't start not in park so you gotta mess around with them to get them to start and they have blown diffs transmission engines turbos so many problems.
So i think they are maybe going to go back to Toyotas again just because for us in the harsh environment and punishment we give them they seem to handle better than anything else.
Dead right there Disco Man they flog the crap out of them and we are open cut so ours go some places you would not believe haha just mad!! No way do they treat their own cars like that all of our cars have badly damaged back doors on them from people trying to line up to lighting plants and just hopeless!! But they do seem to be the only car that can handle the brutal punishment they cop!
