Up until a few years ago, Central Norseman Gold's entire fleet was Land Rover. I think they changed to Toyota at about the time Western Mining Corporation sold them off (Pat would probably have a better idea on this than I do).
One of the main reasons that mining companies got into Toyotas initially was the massive fleet discounts that they were offered at the time - no other vehicle manufacturer could come close to them in price.
Having said that - they do still make some of the "toughest" vehicles that suit the requirements of the mining industry.
I've lost count of the number of Toyotas I've had as company vehicles. Mostly Prado's (I've had at least 7 of them) and a few Land Cruisers. Fortunately, never had a HiLux. Would I buy a Toyota myself ........... not a chance. ;)
Edit: I tell a lie - SWMBO has a Camry. Boring as bat**** but cheap, reliable and does the job. It is probably soon to be replaced - we're thinking Freelander.
Never seen one at all on any mine size as Disco Man said power to low and most have to have dual air bags and abs as a minimum or i know our site does!! Although i see BMKal has seen a site with them but I've only ever been on a few central QLD sites. We do have one SWB Mercedes Unimog haha thats what the pump crew use and my god they give it a flogging and the little bugger goes anywhere its a crack up :p
I had a salisbury diff center for sale on ebay, A bloke came to collect it in a Hilux, the diff was for his dads Landy. The Hilux had a V8 in it and upon asking about it he said it had a Rover 3.5 ( weird huh)
It was still 2WD only as the front propshaft would not fit because he had to modify the exhaust.
he had 35's on it and the rear diff was a CIG locker (welded up) when he left he smoked the rear tyres up with associated axle tramp (bogan)
Those Hilux axles ARE tough !!
Similarily the bloke next door used to do rollbacks in his pos GQ patrol and axle hop up the road - I always hoped he would throw a tail-shaft but nothing ever broke.
try doing that stuff in any Landy and its going to end in tears.
None since the airbag rule,lots before.I worked at HVO coal in the lower hunter and the open cut inspector drove a metalic green L322 RR,it even had large rims,can't remember but 19'' or something,130's were common place,the A frame ball joint was the one thing that used to flog out,LC's used to break diffs,both wore out door hinges.On all sites I've worked on ''flogging'' vehicles was instant dismisal,if you returned with damage or were spotted driving with some welly you had some explaining to do. And you can back that up?,I've had both at the same time and used in the same conditions and my Land Rovers have been more reliable,all of the problems you read on this forum are repeated on Nissan and Toyota forums,the only difference is LR owners aren't full of BS and will tell you outright what goes wrong instead of protecting a myth,I think you need to get out more. Yes mate, Ive owned and rebuilt dozens of Landrovers since the early 80's In the 2000's I got sick of working on them instead of driving them, then I had 3 Toyotas, rebuilt a 79 BJ40 and done a few round Aust trips in 1HDT 80 and 1HZ 105 Toyotas, Just drove them never modified them, never broke anything, tools got rusty . (well the 1HDT did blow up at 460,000km) I got sick of boredom and swapped the 105 for a '06 Td5 110 and out comes the tools again, replaced everything except the engine. Rebuilt Diffs, hubs, transfercase/ gearbox , wiring, .... everything stuffs up on them, Love the Landy but they just are bloody unreliable.
Landrover are defenitly fun to drive and great off road - but not dependable at all, saving grace is they are easy to fix.
