I guess anyone that tries to take a petrol V8 outback as far as they did could be questioned as to sanity.... Although it was funny to watch them flying along past everyone, only to have to double back for fuel when they realised they wouldn't make it!! Ironically wasting more fuel in the process, they seemed pretty cranky about that.

 Just add a long ranger tank, which adds 80 litres. A current LC 300 has 110 litres, 200 138 litres. The Patrol has 140 so add 80 and it would be 220 litres. If towing at 25 litres / 100km, 210 litres (10 litre sneeze factor) would get you
| Type | Used | To Use | Range |
| Y62 | 25 | 210 | 840 |
| LC200 | 18 | 128 | 711 |
| D4 | 15 | 80 | 533 |
10 litre for sneeze factor and with a diesel, you cannot run it empty due to likely bottom tank contaminants, you can with the petrol.
 There is also a Long Ranger tank that will remove the spare tyre, same for the D4 etc, in the Y62 it adds an extra 152 litres to the 140.
As to weights: here is a list of the weights. And advantage with LR is no need to add air springs to the rear axle. And air springs add some weight. Most towing Landcruisers have GVM upgrades, which ruin their around town ride (they must IMO).

The Prado has been disabled IMO by putting in metal doors and thereby increasing its weight a lot, otherwise it would have competed with the LC 300 quite well IMO, although its engine and ad-blue are severe negatives IMO. Nonetheless it benefits from "serviceability" in remote areas.
Also Land Rover never have lost their patent on pushing the unlifted tyre downwards in off road mode via air pressure from the parallel tyre. They are linked front to back in high range. Meanwhile the Y62 links the front to the rear I think all the time with hydraulics, a system I do not fully understand. But IMO they are very good off road compared to other vehicles in standard form (excepting LR, Ineos and GR LC 300 probably) except for the Y62's bulk. The Y63 will have air suspension and a turbo V6, I imagine it will be more fuel efficient except if one uses its power.
Now if you add 2 adults that's 160kg, plus two children that's 90kg, = 250kg. 639 => 389. The fuel tank would weigh 40kg, so 349 left, not including the 80 litres of fuel = 60kg =>289 kg. Take a bull bar off that @ 45kg =>244kg.
Now you if you added a 2.5 tonne van to that, will that would add 250 kg, which means your illegal. Not including the weight of the tow bar. Plus some clothing and drinks in the Y62. Add levelling air springs for safety, and you add more weight.
Add a fridge @ 40kg + battery at 30 kg + wires plus a rear view camera all up 15 kg its another 85 kg and then some light weight draw with some tools in them and its another 50kg. ... you've lost your insurance and you're breaking the law.
Yet - it's all quite close to being legal. Running with the 2nd tank empty, you'd have 244 kg. That's hopefully a 2.4 tonne van. Annoyingly though, it would be safer if it was 280 kg - weight on the rear for a van is a good thing. Put it down the back of the van and things are much less safe ... so the tow ball weight issue is fraught with safety issues where a rear weight biased trailer is more dangerous but legal while a safer weight bias is illegal.
I wonder if makers don't do this deliberately, to make it difficult to use the vehicle for what they market them for - long country driving and towing along with some things and people inside the vehicle. Maybe its lawyers, actuaries and warranty number crunchers who have sat down and said lets make it difficult for an Australian tow vehicle to tow a 3.5 tonne caravan with a four people in it legally. And the proof is in the pudding ...
